I come here every couple of years to see if something has changed...unfortunately, no. What a huge disappointment. Inside a gracious 1920s palace lies a cafe that could be one of the Prague gems, but instead...the original beauty of the grand space has been scarred by the interventions in 50s, 90s and then 00s. What is left? Beautiful chandeliers (albeit nobody cares almost half of the lightbulbs have gone out) and wooden panneling on the floor that hasnt been waxed or polished for decades.
Entrance through a marble staircase leads you through an empty staircase. In the first floor, an easel has a hand-written memo in Czech "Café is in the second floor". Furniture is just pathetic. Old TON armchairs and chairs are almost falling apart, whoever runs the place decided to add some black leather sofas with LACK side tables (5 Euros a piece in IKEA). A large fridge with fake flowers on the top would be disgusting in a 90s sweetshop in a local village, but in heart of Prague...just appaling. Bar looks like something they dug out of socialist canteens from 1970s. Loud radio is on trying to mitigate the dead atmosphere of the spot. Owner is apparently perfectly fine the cafe is despite its prime location most of the time almost empty so the amount of staff is very limited. Coffee is average at best, desserts remind of the 80s and 90s.
Terrace is a chapter of its own. Steel structure holding the plastic roof of the terrace belongs to the delicate structure of the building about the same way as the fake woven rattan chairs (made of plastic of course).
I so wish that one day, someone will restore the café to the former glory. Until that happens, waste of time and money that will just make you sad. If you want to experience a grand-café atmosphere - Louvre, or even Slavia or Lucerna, will give you that within 400...
Read moreMe and my friend usually have a great experience here. The view is great, the interior is gorgeous and the coffe prices are good (but to be honest, you pay more for the location then the drinks). Unfortunately, this time we didn't enjoy our stay. Unlike other times, when younger woman would welcome us with a smile, today we were served by an older man. From the very beginning he treated us coldly and with quite the attitude. From what we could see we were the only people treated this way. We don't know if it was because we were the only young-adults in the room but we didn't appreciate this attitude. The last straw was right before we left. My friend already finished his drink but I like to enjoy mine a bit longer. The waiter came to our table and stood there. This told us that I should finish my drink and leave. This was very rude. I would understand this if the place was packed but there weren't that many people. I'm sure we'll come back again, but this experience was very uncomfortable. Except this person, all the stuff is friendly and...
Read moreVery aggressive, rude staff member. We arrived at 9:10am. The restaurant was open but the door was closed and very difficult to open. We tried to push it. The staff member stormed to the door throwing his hands in the air and rolling his eyes. He aggressively pulled the door open and barked hello at us then stormed off. There were no customers or other wait staff at the restaurant. We were unwilling to stay due to the bad attitude and probably poor service we would receive afterwards. He stood at the bar angrily cutting lemons and barked goodbye at us as we left. Was recommended by the Honest Guide. Won't recommend this place to anyone. Very...
