We came for our daughter's birthday today. We enjoyed a range of food starting with the Mushroom, onion and cheese Tarte flambée which I only have pictures of it partially eaten because we were quite hungry from the beginning.
My wife had the taliata d'onglet de bœuf. The blends of flavors to accompany the beef, the sweetness of the tomato, the freshness of the pesto and the slight bitterness of the greens blended well against the dark sauce and well seasoned beef to introduce a savory, powerful richness only cut by the crisp, well-seasoned Pommes frites provided on the side.
I had the Magret de canard laqué au miel et réduction de Gewurztraminer. The slightly sweet sauce against the strong flavor of duck balanced by the collection of vegetables and crisp skin brought about a delicate flavor to a personal favorite of mine. The Spätzle accompanying it was the best I've had in Alsace. It was a little browned which went well to take on a new side to the sauce the duck rested in.
My daughter had the steak haché VBF with frites. She has texture issues, doesn't like hamburgers and doesn't eat steak, but she completely cleared her plate which was a surprise for us. She said the steak could've been seasoned a bit more, but it helped to eat alongside the well-seasoned frites.
For dessert, we had the Tiramisu au spéculoos, which my wife claims to be her best of all time. For me, it was perfectly matched to end such a rich meal with such light flavors.
We also had the crème brûlée à LA vanille. It is a very smooth texture for a crème brûlée with strong vanilla notes and the sugar was expertly caramelized.
The ice cream that came with my daughter's meal was delicious, though she was not a fan of the salted caramel ice cream, I quite enjoyed it. The chocolate ice cream was a solid choice for her dessert.
I had a café alsacien that I try with every place I go in this area. I would say it is only the fourth best in the area, but it nails the flavor I'm used to, so it's a solid buy if you're rounding off a rich dinner with a little alcohol.
The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. There are a lot of cute nicknacks and things about as well as comfort items for the children. The plates and glasses are practical and uncomplicated. There are beautiful little additions to the decorations that definitely took time and care from the owners and staff. We felt the warmth in this place on this chilly evening.
The blend of great food and kind staff was the perfect finish for our daughter's birthday. She came for the frites, but left a fan of everything. So did we. Thank you for a...
Read moreMy review is based on their New year's eve set menu (which I'd expect to be better than the regular menu as they can limit what they will cook for the entire night). They sent us a treat before the started that was tasteless to say the least. The only good thing in it was the battered shrimp (hard to get it wrong). The started and dessert were good, but the main dish was a disaster. The risotto was overcooked and not seasoned. Service struggled to keep up and at times seemed a bit lost (on the other hand they were all very attentive and friendly). Last, but not least important, my partner is vegetarian and what we saw was another restaurant that decides to accommodate vegetarians without properly planning for it (despite our booking in advance) and thus falling short (she didn't get the treat at the beginning as it has fish and her main was the boring risotto - they just removed the scallops).
There are a few good restaurants in Strasbourg at similar price range that offer...
Read moreThis is one of those places where I want to give a 5 star but can't because of certain things. Let's be clear, the food was great. But.... We arrived and a very helpful waitress found us a table. However, they just forgot us. Can't really blame them as there were only two of them. The barman was passing us who took the drinks order. Then the waitress came for the food order, and the food arrived even before we finished the drinks. My partner said, "too late to take drink orders but too quick to serve the food". None of the waitress came to ask if the food was OK. But again, can't blame them as they were running around like crazy. Verdict: go and eat in this place as the food is great. But if you like good service, then don't expect much, even though the people are very friendly, though not...
