My wife and I spent three nights at the Maison Rouge hotel in Strasbourg, France as part of an extended visit to France with another couple. We picked the hotel as our daughter recommended it from a previous stay and the fact that it is a Bonvoy hotel. We booked the room on the Bonvoy website and the cost for three nights was 624.21€.||The hotel is located in a fantastic location in the Old Town area of the city: a block from Place Kleber and less than a ten minute walk to Place Gutenberg and the Cathedral. A Galleries Lafayette is literally next door. A tram line runs right in front. You are in the thick of many restaurants and stores.||The hotel is part of the Autograoh Collection, a group of trendy boutique-y hotels. The lobby is quite small and has seating for only three on one couch. (There is a bar/lounge off to the side.) Check-in was friendly and efficient. (Kudos to Sarah. And a shout-out to the concierge staff for their help with travel, dining and barber arrangements!)||Our room (328) was decorated in a transitional style in muted colors. It had classic touches like crown molding and wainscoting, with modern furniture. My wife claimed it was the most comfortable hotel room that she’s stayed in.||The closet included drawers, one of which contained a safe. Two robes were a nice surprise. No sign of an iron/ironing board.||An unpleasant surprise was the door stop on the floor in front of the closet. (See pic.) It was easy to stub your toe if you weren’t careful.||Another minor irritant: a raised threshold at the main door that we kept stepping on. Minor inconveniences.||There was a desk, chair and lamp. Next was a “dresser” that held a fully-stocked mini bar with a coffee/tea set-up on top. Finally, there was a small round ottoman.||The queen-size bed was flanked by two cocktail tables. Reading lamps and USB ports and power outlets were on each side. A large flat screen TV was on the wall opposite the foot of the bed. There were four pillows on the bed and the pillow top mattress was very comfortable.||One quirk of the room was the fact that there were motion detector lights in the crown molding and in the closet that would go on automatically. It took us almost three days to figure out how to override them.||Our room faced a courtyard and side street, so street noise was not a problem. An unexpected surprise were the remote shutters that, when activated, effectively turned the room into a cave for sleeping - much appreciated by my wife. (Our friends’ room faced the street, yet they were not bothered by street noise. They also appreciated their shutters.)||We were told at check-in that we were getting an upgraded room. The upgrade was obviously due to the bathroom. Due to the irregular shape of the room. It was huge. The commode was in a separate room. A normal-sized sink sported adequate counter space and a make-up mirror. There were pump bottles of Clarins hand soap and lotion. The spacious walk-in shower had hand-held and rain shower heads. (Our friends’ room came with a tub/shower arrangement.). Clarins body wash, shampoo and conditioner were on the wall. Water pressure and temperature were fine, although several times I was hit with a jolt of hotter water during my shower.||Towels were fairly thick and included wash clothes. There also was a heated towel bar, which we never turned on. Leave used towels on the floor if you want them replaced.||The hotel does offer a breakfast on the second floor, but we found the price (38€) too dear. Besides, there were multiple places in the area that offered reasonably priced baguettes, croissants and coffee. Which we frequently visited!||In spite of my picky comments, we loved our stay at the Maison Rouge. We highly recommend it and would definitely stay there again if we were to return to Strasbourg.||For more information, visit the...
Read moreEasily the worst stay of our 2-week Honeymoon trip in Europe. Over the course of our trip we stayed at multiple properties spanning Hilton, Hyatt, Independent, Airbnb, Marriott, etc. and this was the most disappointing.
I booked this stay 8 months in advance and mentioned during booking that it was our honeymoon and we were excited to visit Strasbourg. Nothing on the reservation confirmation mentioned a parking reservation is required. Be advised that this hotel is in the pedestrian zone of the city and not accessible by car without prior reservation. When viewing this hotel on the Marriott app, the 'on-site parking' section only states "On-site Parking, fee: 50 EUR daily". One has to click dropdowns into the other fine print to find that booking is required. (It's more visible on the desktop version of the website.) However, It's on me for not double checking this with the hotel. 24 hours before check-in I was emailed a notice about parking, but due to having spotty internet service in Europe I did not see it. (We were staying at an airbnb the night before in the countryside). It's worth mentioning that other hotels on our trip reached out multiple weeks in advance to ask method of travel, specify parking instructions, special occasion, etc.
When we arrived in Strasbourg to the pedestrian zone, we were not allowed to pass the barricade in our car without the code from the hotel. When calling the hotel, they stated that all parking reservations were full and we would have to find public parking. We were fine with this, but when we asked if we could just have the code to drop our bags at the hotel since it was raining and then leave to park in public parking we were refused.
After finding public parking and dragging our bags 1/4 mile in the rain to the front of the hotel, the doorman gave us a condescending look and did not open the door or help us with our bags. At reception, when we mentioned that it was our honeymoon this was ignored by the front desk agent. Instead of a 'congratulations' we received a condescending "that's a lot of luggage for a 1 night stay". We had one suitcase each plus an extra bag, hardly excessive, and were only staying one night in the city to catch the train the next day. I'm not sure why a comment like that would be warranted. Even my wife who is normally easy going seemed pretty offput by the attitude of the people at the front desk towards us.
I wasn't expecting a room upgrade since I'm only a Marriott Silver member, but it would have been nice to at least gotten a 'congratulations' or something. The standard room was tiny, but we were actually excited to at least have a small balcony until we realized that the door is chained shut. Nothing special was in the room to recognize our stay (which again, was not expected, but just a stark contrast to every other stay on our trip). The small room and off standish service made this stay really disappointing overall, especially given the fact that Marriott was the brand we used for our Wedding hotel block. We skipped the 34 Euro breakfast in favor of a coffee and pastry at one of the great local bakeries, and we'll look for a different chain or independent hotel next time we're in Strasbourg as the city itself is really...

Another wonderful stay at Maison Rouge!
During our 2023 stay at Maison Rouge, Norman highly encouraged us to return during the Christmas season to experience Le Marché de Noel. So we did!!
Upon our arrival, it was so special to see a familiar face. Norman was there to greet us! He had received a promotion! It is well-deserved! Norman always goes above and beyond. It is a quality that cannot be learned, but it from the heart.
Our room was comfortable with a view of the town. There was a welcome gift of locally baked Alsacien cookies from Guest Relations, Norman. On our way to see Strasbourg, Norman continued to provide excellent hospitality by offering us a map of the Christmas markets, his suggested route, the oldest market, and an umbrella (as it was raining.) Most importantly, Norman provided excellent communication regarding the tram/train/taxi logistics and limitations due to the holiday events to ensure we knew the best way possible to our destinations. We received Five Star Hospitality!
…….. 2023 October Excellent Hotel! This is one of the Top hotels I have ever experienced. There is so much history in the hotel and it has recently been renovated. The decor and ambiance is gorgeous and retro Hollywood chic. The staff is charming and helpful. They are an excellent team!
The location of the hotel is in the center of Strasbourg, walking distance to the Cathedral, Petite France, Michelin Star restaurants, local favorites, shopping, and the train station. Plus, the city tram runs in front of the hotel.
Norman welcomed us to the hotel and was extremely helpful at the Front Desk. He also helped us find a last minute dinner reservation at a cute Alsacien restaurant nearby. He went above and beyond for us during our stay and is exceptional.
The room was magnificent! We had a corner suite with a view of the Cathedral. It had a lovely vanity, comfortable bath tub, and a Nespresso machine plus more. I loved the special touches! The bed was extremely comfortable. I didn’t want to leave…
Our breakfast buffet was delicious! They offered warm dishes prepared to order as well. The atmosphere was delightful.
The hotel bar is beautiful and they serve classic and signature cocktails. This is one of the BEST bars and hidden secrets in Strasbourg. They also have delicious wines and champagne by the glass. We continued to return for drinks after our stay and brought local family. We love this sanctuary in the center of town.
Flavio helped us with our luggage and guided us on where to meet our Uber. Only taxis and the tram are permitted in front of the hotel. We are so grateful for all of his assistance.
This newly renovated hotel is not only beautiful but the staff is wonderful, helpful, and kind. They work together and are extremely professional. They have a level of customer service that is rare these days. We are so grateful for the exceptional experience and look forward to returning.
Next visit, I need to...
