If you’re wandering the heart of Melaka city looking for a local breakfast spot that balances nostalgia and comfort, Juan Kee Kopitiam is one of those gems that quietly makes an impression. Nestled in a vintage shophouse with air-conditioning (a blessing in this April heat), the space is surprisingly roomy with enough distance between tables to actually relax while you eat, a rare find with most kopitiams.
I dropped by near opening time on a weekday and had no trouble finding a seat. The menu leans into Malaysian comfort food, and I loved that every dish felt hearty without going overboard. The noodles with barbequed pork came as a massive portion, way larger than I expected it to be. But the highlight for me? The kaya toast. Crispy, generously spread with a unique pale green kaya that wasn’t overly sweet, and paired with the most perfectly soft-boiled eggs (Unfortunately this isn't the case everywhere)....

We tried the following dishes: • Wanton Mee: This was alright, nothing fantastic. • Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken: The rice was not bad, but the curry wasn't tasty. It was lacking both salt and spice. • Mee Sian with Rendang Chicken: The mee siam tasted like fried beehoon, not bad-tasting, but definitely not like fried mee siam. The chicken was really salty and tasted like frozen chicken. • Kaya Butter Toast: This was not bad, the kaya was rather fragrant and not overly sweet.

Read moreGood breakfast spot serving the usual dishes such as kaya toast, wonton mee and nasi lemak. Will also be suitable to lunch. When we were there, we got bitten by mosquitoes so it is advisable to bring repellent if you want a peaceful meal.
Nothing too special about most dishes but what stood out most was the nasi lemak which was so fragrant and flavourful. Right when it was served we could already smell the coconut, and the taste of it was even better. The kaya toast doesn’t seem to use pure kaya though, it’s probably a mixture with cream to make it light green in colour and is also not sweet. Kopi peng is also more bitter than usual, and lacks the creaminess I’m...
