Sri Pogyatha Vinoyagar Moorthi - Oldest Hindu temple in the country If you walk down the offshoot street of Jalan Tukang, just off Jonker Street, you will find three of the oldest places of worship in all of Malaysia. These being the Kampung Kling Mosque, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and this Hindu temple known as Sri Pogyatha Vinoyagar Moorthi (hindu) Temple which was built in 1781.
The temple, as the name suggests, is dedicated to Vinoyagar (Genesha). It is quite small and modest compared to more elaborated decorated Hindu temples that you may have visited elsewhere, and can be quickly visited in just 10-15 minutes, making this a place potentially worth seeing if sightseeing in the Jonker Street area.
Of the temples on Jalan Tukang, also known as Harmony Street, the one we most preferred was the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. This one is the first we'd seek out if we were visting with limited time. However, if you are on a rushed schedule, its worth ducking into Sri Pogyatha Vinoyagar Moorthi Temple for a few minutes as well. If you are lucky and visit in the evening around 6pm you can see and listen to the prayers...

Read moreI recently visited to this temple for the first time with my wife, and while we were excited to experience the spiritual atmosphere, our visit was unfortunately marred by the behavior of one of the priests. When we approached to receive the vibuthi, the priest hastily and with visible dissatisfaction placed it on my finger, which felt dismissive and rushed. I couldn’t help but notice that others who presented their offerings on silverware, including higher currency notes, were treated with much more patience and received a warmer, more respectful interaction.
While I understand that offerings are a part of many religious practices, it was disappointing to feel that our devotion was being valued less because of the way we made our offering. Temples should be places where all worshippers, regardless of the amount they give, are treated with equal respect. The focus should be on the spiritual connection, not the material offering.
I hope that in the future, the temple can strive to make all devotees feel equally welcomed and respected, regardless of how they choose to present...
