Jonker Street is the main street running through the Chinatown section of Malacca on the northeast side of the Malacca River. This is a fun area of the old city center that is easy to visit and worth at least one stroll during your time in Melaka. The real action on Jonker Street takes place during the weekend night markets, which is by far the best time to experience Jonker Street. Lots of market stalls selling little souvenirs to nice small eats. During the rest of the week, Jonker Street remains busy with little restaurants and shops. We sort of liked Jonker Street better in years past when there were more antique shops and the area felt much less commercialised. Today there are many tourist shops selling local delicacies, treats, typical souvenirs and even fashionable wear. We tried our hand at clothing shopping during our most recent trip and found prices to be almost on par with Singapore or Hong Kong. There are some long standing restaurants along Jonker that are worth trying. We dined at Nancy's Kitchen, just off Jonker and had two very good local dishes (see our review for Nancy's Kitchen if interested) during a lunch here. We also tried the Geographer's Cafe and had a decent lunch at this nice bar/restaurant. Overall, Jonker Street is a good place to visit during trips to Melaka and is very well located in the heart of the old town. As such, its worth you time to find and have a browse. If you are visiting on a weekend, it is definitely worth finding during the evening market.

Jonker walk is the main tourist attraction of melaka, for a good reason. There are a ton of boutiques, souvenir shops, antique shops, trinklets shop selling knick knacks, restaurants, cafes and things to see and do for tourists visiting. I personally found the taking 4 hours to explore the street was a good amount of time, and do be aware that the restaurants along Jonker Walk tend to be more touristy and crowded so choose to dine elsewhere. While you might be drawn to the hustle and bustle of the main Jonker walk, I preferred the quiet ambience of the adjacent streets with equally eclectic shops selling things like vintage books and jewellery, to paintings and traditional art. These are good for those who do not do well with throngs of crowd, and prefer the peaceful atmosphere to walk and browse. There are a ton of murals around here- take some time to soak in their artistic feel. A good time to walk here would be after the midday sun and heat. Definitely check out the cafes here because they provided very comforting ambience that’s probably unrivalled in the entire Malaysia. I loved how artsy and folksy this place is! Definitely come here, it’s like Haji Lane but 2x bigger with a larger variety of shops.

Jonker Walk is in the Chinatown area in Malacca. It starts from across Malacca River and the street is filled with historical houses along its left and right sides. Many of which are shops selling antiques, textiles, foods, handicrafts and souvenirs such as keychains and shirts. Jonker Walk turns into a night market every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. until 12 midnight. Dont worry about safety as its street blocked for traffic. There are a huge range of wonderful things to buy and eat here. You’ll find stalls selling everything from souvenirs, food produce, clothing, toys, jewellery and accessories, temporary tattoos, art prints. Food such as coconut ice-cream, curried fish balls, pineapple tart and steamed buns can be found here. There are so many things to do and eat at Jonker Street Night Market. We found many stalls at Jonker Street Night Market selling very unique gifts that we’ve not seen before in any other night market in south east Asia and we would say Jonker Street is definitely one of our favourites. #jonkerwalk #malacca #malaysia #tonywanderlust

The Jonker Walk (雞場街; pinyin: Jīcháng jiē) is the Chinatown area in Malacca City in the state of Malacca, Malaysia located along Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat). It starts from across Malacca River near the Stadthuys, with the street in the area filled with historical houses along its left and right sides dating back to 17th century, many of which are shops selling antiques, textiles, foods, handicrafts and souvenirs such as keychains and shirts. The area turns into a night market every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the evening from 6 p.m. until 12 midnight, with its street blocked for traffic. The bustling Jonker Street is not just about delicious food, artistic creations and bargaining, but it also has a number of attractions in and around it. The numerous museums, temples and mosques, each of them drawing inspiration from all around the world give the visitors the perfect reason to not miss out on them. Jonker Street truly depicts the fast, jolly and rich cultural life of Malaysia and forms a smooth knot between the ancient traditions and modern technology.

On 19/12/2024 I went to Jonker street area looking for local coffee shop for breakfast. But unfortunately that it could be too early, about 10am. Most shops not opened yet except a couple of shops selling chicken rice. And there were quite many shops permanently closed, probably due to the Covid 19 pandemic shut down. I came across a shop in a row of old houses by chance, it was selling Nyonya laksa (similar to the Singapore laksa (curry + coconut gravy) ). The presentation was good but taste wise not as I would have wanted. Melaka nonya laksa and chendol for brunch. Food verdict - laksa taste like Singapore 328 Katong laksa, but gravy too thin, lacks the "kick" a good curry laksa has. 3/5. Chendol - red bean and the chendol were from thawed ingredients, were not freshly made for today. Gula Melaka had little sour after taste. 2/5. I think the shop owner, whether is local or foreigner, should train his Blangadeshi and Myanmar (I think) workers to improve on the food taste and only use fresh ingrediant for the chendol. Total price = RM20.

Honestly, there isn't much to rave about this place aside from the bustling crowds filling the sidewalks. The weekdays see the roads jam-packed with cars, making it uncomfortably hot and humid, exacerbated by the CO2 emissions from the vehicles. It's high time the local authorities consider banning cars from Jonker Walk to improve the pedestrian experience. Planting trees along the street could provide much-needed shade and improve air circulation. Despite the abundance of restaurants and dessert stalls like cendol, the quality often falls short, with prices inflated. It's hard to justify paying $9 for a bowl of cendol. The famed chicken rice is overhyped and disappointingly bland; better options can be found elsewhere. Many cafes dot the street, but the coffee lacks flavor. Overall, unless you're desperate for something to do in Melaka, it's not worth a visit.
