The worst experience so far eating out Indian food in Nepal. I have tried to write a little more detailed and personal account of my extremely dreadful experience including a very condescending interaction with the manager/owner and the waitress! 🙏
So here it goes… I was really looking forward to trying this place out after reading so many good reviews about it. Alas, even after almost 10 hours of fasting the whole day and with a really hungry tummy craving for some warm Indian dish, Green Villy’s food was anything but palatable! The conversation that followed after my comment about their food being subpar was jarring and dehumanizing. I have never left a restaurant feeling so wronged and upset!
Apparently something must have been off with or wrong about me for not finding this restaurant’s most popular dish- chicken butter masala- delectable. I also ordered plain rice and banana lassi. I left most of the masala’s gravy out and tried to chew off as much meat off the bones of the three pieces in the curry. The meat was neither juicy nor tasted fresh. Anyway, as I went to pay at the counter, the manager/owner guy said “I hope the food was good.”
Yes, I noticed that they do smile and try making people feel welcomed. But it seemed dissembling to me because as soon as I replied, “honestly the food didn’t taste like anything. It was bland at best”, their warm smile faded and their “you what!” countenance emerged. The manager could not believe me I presume since right after my reply he let off that disbelief laugh and retorted, “Well, that dish is always good here. Everybody likes it. I don’t know what happened to you!” I was shocked! Horrified indeed at what I just heard. I reiterated that the dish was literally flavorless, and I had to add bunch of salt several times to taste anything…something!
The guy continued, “butter chicken is supposed to be sweet.” I said, “okay, yes, it has sweet side to it but that’s not all you get to taste in a good butter chicken meal. There was no hint of masala/ spices whatsoever.” Then, he just looked at his waitress and customers near the counter and started laughing again saying, “I don’t know what happened to you!” (This is a literal translation of his remark in Nepali which means that there must be something wrong with me to not like this supposedly amazing dish!
I said, “Wow! You asked me how I liked the food and this is what you have to say to my experience. You are blaming me for not finding the dish up to its hype?” It was a sham of a dish honestly. I was questioned if I even knew how the dish supposed to taste like.
Man, I have worked at Nepalese and Indian restaurants in the States…I have went out to eat at eateries/curry houses across India, and many many times around Washington and Virginia and extensively in Pokhara and Kathmandu. My partner, an American, and I, a Nepali, frequently cook Indian dishes and share them with friends and families. We make our own mixes of spices, sourcing ingredients from different countries and cultures. And hearing a little jarring comment back to an honest customer review was pathetic.
Also, I was the only customer for about half an hour and half that time the waitress there after serving my dish was super noisy on the background. At one instance, her screaming had gotten so loud that I looked back to see if she was okay. I guess she was playing with a kid but again hey I would not want to dine at a place where servers are unprofessional and don’t care about their customers eating or trying to have conversations.
Overall many minuses to Green Villy. I hope you guys cultivate some decency to acknowledge that you may have shortcomings and have compassion to treat others with little more respect though they may have different opinions and experiences to you. 🫡

Located in the lively backpacker zone of Paknajol, Thamel – Kathmandu, Green Villy Restaurant is a small but well-kept local eatery that's perfect for travelers looking to enjoy tasty non-veg dishes in a peaceful and clean setting. As someone who travels often and enjoys exploring hidden local food joints, Green Villy left a good impression on me.
The restaurant is entirely indoor, but the interior walls are painted in calming green, which gives a relaxed and natural feel to the place — matching its name. It’s not a big or flashy place, but it's clean, quiet, and has a homely atmosphere. Perfect for those who want to sit down and eat in peace without the chaos of the main Thamel streets.
The highlight here is definitely their non-veg items. I tried their Chicken Curry and Egg Curry with Rice, and both were well-spiced, home-style, and satisfying. The portions were decent, and the food was freshly cooked. Their Chicken Biryani is also a popular choice among locals and travelers — flavorful, aromatic, and served hot.
The menu includes a variety of items like chowmein, thukpa, thali sets, momos, and snacks like chicken lollipop and chilly chicken. Prices are affordable, especially for the area, and the service is friendly and polite, though slightly slow during busy hours — which is common in local kitchens.
They also serve local drinks and beer like Tuborg, Gorkha, and Khukuri Rum, so it's a good place to chill in the evening with friends after exploring the city.
In short, Green Villy Restaurant is a solid pick for good non-veg food, peaceful indoor seating, and friendly vibes. If you're staying in or near Paknajol and craving some homemade-style chicken curry or biryani, this place is worth a visit.

Read moreGreat family owned and run restaurant. We came here several times during our stay in the city. The service was fast and friendly. All the food is cooked fresh to order. All meals came out very hot and fresh. Portion sizes were very generous and the prices were very cheap, especially compared to other restaurants closer to the tourist areas. Delicious authentic food is served here. The naans and roties were fluffy and crispy. The chicken sekuwa was succulent and juicy and melted in your mouth. The buff thukpa was full of veg and noodles and was full of flavour and the portion size was huge. We tried several different types of mo mos with different fillings including chicken and veg. Each selection had unique flavours and were delicious. We tried steamed, kothy and chilli. The mixed veg curry had lots of different veg in and had a big mix of spices in, giving it a nice mix of flavour. The chicken sedeko had a nice spicey kick to it. The chicken katti roll was delicious. The boiling hot masala tea was served in a nice big cup which we liked. The fresh banana lassi was so refreshing with coconut sprinkled on top, the heart straw was a lovely touch. A nice way to finish a delicious meal. We would highly recommend...
