This is a great place to come if you love seafood. The atmosphere is clean, bright, and homely. The centre piece of the restaurant has to be the huge fish tank that houses dozens of tropical fish. We arrived at the restaurant at 7pm. It wasn't too busy, but filled up fast. By the time we left at 9, the place was full. Make a reservation.
Everyone else seemed to come for their seafood towers. Many varieties are available ranging from 60 euros to 115 euros. We are spoiled and live in beautiful Vancouver Canada, where something similar would cost us half as much and in Canadian dollars. This isn't a shot at the restaurant, but more of an explanation on our food choices. Everyone else seemed to be enjoying the towers though.
My wife had the razor clams which were delicious and I had the herring with a generous pour of Dutch Jenever (sometimes called dutch gin, but it doesn't taste like gin). The jenever paired nicely with the herring.
We both shared the dover sole. Our parents recommended this place based on the dover sole. It is pan fried in butter giving it a nice crispy outside, but still nice and tender on the inside. The server de-boned the entire fish at our table, which is optional, but definitely a site to see the surgical precision. For dessert, we had the lemon mascarpone with lime ice cream. This was a perfect way to cap off the dinner with refreshing citrus. All this with a bottle of wine and the night was very reasonably priced.
Of note: we witnessed our server tell one of his patrons who was settling their bill that "you must tip us". This was really shocking. I don't care what restaurant you are, a single person does not have to tip. This expectation that customers must tip is one of my biggest gripes with the restaurant industry. You should still have to earn the tip, not demand it. And to verbalize that demand in way that we heard it half way down the restaurant was really...

Read moreI wanted a nice seafood restaurant for dinner when I was in Amsterdam recently, so I asked my Uber driver for a recommendation. He recommended LUCIUS, and let me tell you, he was spot on. Traveling alone, I prefer to sit at the bar and enjoy a nice meal as I'm a little self-conscious when eating alone. My waiter was Nick who was super response and provided excellent service and advice. He also engaged in pleasant conversation and made a point of making my meal memorable. From the appetizer, to the main meal, to dessert, LUCIUS was fantastic! The quality of the Sole (3 pieces) was fantastic, the roasted potatoes and salad were both amazing. Even the ice cream for dessert was tasty and properly portioned. I had a Pomegranate Martini to start, and with dinner, a lovely French Burgundy which cost 7 Euros. That's $10.00! Nick also made a nice nip of tequila, cranberry, and lime. The food, service, cost, wine, dessert were all amazing. The employees care that much. When you're traveling alone for two weeks, a nice dinner at the end of the day makes all the difference...
