I wanted to sample some of the local pancakes and this place did vegan and gf options so my partner could also partake without being in pain later.
There’s only about 11 seats in the place, which seemed to be just about enough for the rhythm of customers on a Friday at around 2pm, but this isn’t a place where you would be able to linger, because there will be other tourists waiting for you to vacate your seats as soon as you put the last bite of pancake in your mouth.
I was really hoping this experience would satisfy our local-cuisine-based desires, but in all honesty, they taste like any crepe you can get basically anywhere in Europe. That’s not really a reflection on The Happy Pig in particular though, just an observation about dutch pancakes. What was different is that they made it rather easy to eat. Sometimes eating a pancake off a paper plate with wooden cutlery can be a little difficult, but in The Happy Pig they rolled the pancake and chopped it into perfect bite sized rounds. It was then served in a perfectly shaped, long rectangular tray.
Over all, very tasty and a perfect quick lunch to break up a day of mooching around shops. My partner got a black coffee along with his pancake and said "it was a solid coffee, wasn't too bitter, wasn't too sour". The chocolate sauce I had on my pancake was rich, I wish I’d have got whipped cream too because it looked tasty, with three generous peaks of cream per pancake.
This is also the perfect place for people watching and eves dropping. One of the staff members threw an orange up in the air and caught it a few times. Two Australian tourists had an enthralling yet rather bland conversation about some people they know who are in a band...

When I arrived it was packed! Seating accommodates for about 10 adults, but there are only three tables, so if you're on your own like I was, you'll probably want to sit outside on their bench and gobble down your pancake.
I found the thin, narrow cardboard container the pancake is rolled, cut and placed in is a unique way of serving the food. Good idea!
My server was bright and courteous with a welcoming smile and a willingness to help. I absolutely love this, because good service costs nothing and gets good reviews from people like me! 👍
It is a tight fit while you wait for your food, but my server brought it directly to me. She didn't call my number and waited behind the counter- she walked up to me, smiled and handed me my food. This is how you serve customers. Nothing over the top or phony, just ensuring a good customer experience.
The food was fresh, hot and tasty. And being vegan, there were ample options, so fret not, fellow animal lovers - you're covered!
As for portion sizes, I gobbled my one up completely because I hadn't eaten lunch and only had a small breakfast, but if you were getting one for brunch or a snack, you could easily share one with a friend or your partner.
I feel like The Happy Pig is in a perfect location, too. I'd suspect they'd get quite a few patrons of the coffeeshop directly opposite their business come across after their smoke to satisfy a case of the muncheeeees!

Read moreHad an horrible experience here with a friend whom was visiting Amsterdam last year. I am choosing to write my review only now because the way my friend and I were treated at this establishment was incredibly rude(still stuck with me). I don’t want to go into details as the situation is generally triggering but simply put, we were both yelled at in front of the whole store with other customers present, for TAKING PICTURES and making the staff feel uncomfortable as a result (that is what the owner, Rico mentioned to me anyways). Whether or not it was racially motivated only the staff in question would know. Dear Happy Pig, your establishment thrives on tourism. Tourists are your main demographic. None of my Dutch friends have ever heard of your store. So maybe when tourists come in; to take videos and pictures of the way you guys prepare your food etc, to give you more publicity, be a little bit more grateful. If your entitled staff needs a heads up before having a picture or video taken, it is on you guys to maybe put a sign in front of the door to “ask for permission for photo or get yelled at and humiliated.” I read many other similar reviews which motivated my little rant of a review of your quaint store. Additionally, the owner gave me a refund which was nice and offered me to come back for pancakes on the house to which I politely declined. Go somewhere else with better...
