This hotel and restaurant/bar are the epitome of Denver history. When you walk into the lobby, you feel as if you’ve gone back 130 years. the hotel has hosted presidents from Taft to Regan and Clinton, and musicians that included the Beatles, Springsteen, and Taylor Swift. The Ship Tavern feels very classic and old-school. And the story of how it came to be in the 1930s is a great one. we were there on a Thursday night. We had a reservation, but could have walked in if we didn’t have one. The cocktails were very nice and not outrageously priced. Our entrées were the Caesar salad with salmon and the 12 oz prime rib (16 and 20 oz are available). The salad was very good and the seafood was fresh. The prime rib was a solid. The portion was generous, and it was seasoned very nicely. But it could have been just a little warmer. The service was unobtrusive, but very friendly and they responded quickly to a raised hand. The prices were on the higher side for what you got, but remember that this is a hotel/urban resort property. It may not be the best choice if you want a gourmet experience or a bargain, but if you’re looking for a solid meal and really wonderful atmosphere, this is the place.

DO NOT GO IF YOU HAVE ANY FOOD ALLERGIES OR INTOLERANCES.

I visited the Ship Tavern on Valentine's Day after checking into the Brown Palace and before going out on the town for the night. We wanted a drink and snack to tide us over. The restaurant was nearly empty at that time (between 4 and 5 pm). As I reviewed their menu, I was disappointed with what I saw. They are trying to appear allergy friendly, but are not doing a great job. For instance, a hummus appetizer was not listed as gluten free, but I know of no hummus that contains gluten. I asked the bartender (our server), Ian, if the hummus had gluten. I told him that I was allergic to gluten, dairy and eggs, but if the app could be made without those, I would want to order it. He had almost no knowledge about the menu. He grumbled and left for awhile and when he came back, he said that the kitchen said there was no gluten. I asked if he inquired about the dairy and egg allergy, and he said he had not...but that the kitchen was very far away and that it was a hassle for him to go back (I'm not sure why he didn't ask that on his first trip...or better yet, know the menu well enough to speak to something so simple). He came back later and said it did not have dairy or eggs, so we ordered it. By that time, we had very little time left, but we hoped it would come up quickly being that it was hummus and vegetables. He came out with the appetizer and lo and behold, there were crackers and bread on top of all of the vegetables and hummus. I asked him what I would be able to eat given this arrangement and he suggested I pick vegetables out from underneath and work around the massive amounts of gluten. I told him that that is not how allergies work. He said he would get another plate of vegetables and hummus and be back. When he came up with that, it was time for us to go, so I had to take my plate back to the room to finish since we were running so late. Sadly, that is not where my frustration ends.

I contacted the Brown Palace via an online form once we returned home and explained my story and asked to be contacted. My boyfriend did the same. Neither of us heard anything back. Nearly two weeks later, I called and asked to speak with someone and was told that I would get a call back. I explained that I was frustrated because we had already asked to be contacted. When I finally got a call back, I asked the woman if she had read our feedback that I referenced ahead of time and she said no....so I explained it all again. But then, strangely, she said that she had already talked to the bartender about the incident and that he had "accommodated" us by going to the kitchen three times! Not sure how she had already talked with him if she had not read any of our feedback. Anyway, she suggested that the best course of action would be for us to come back in to dine (no thank you!). She said that she would be in contact with me by email shortly thereafter so that I would have her contact info, as well as know what action was taken and to come to a better solution for us. Fast forward almost another week, and I have not heard anything. I'm tired of chasing someone at the Ship Tavern down just so that they can learn from my issue to improve the experience for others. At this point, I will just tell others that this is not a safe place to eat if you have any allergies or intolerances. The Ship Tavern...and the Brown Palace...should be ashamed of their terrible customer service. The Brown Palace is supposed to be luxurious--so this experience and, more importantly, the lack of follow up, has been quite disappointing. In today's world in the fine state of Colorado, it is very easy to eat out and about with allergies and intolerances, but not here. Cross it off your list of places...

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Just left this hotel because my husband and I were assaulted by a drunk man in the Ship Tavern. The worst part about it is the hotel manager and security did NOTHING to man that assaulted us. It's Christmas Day, my husband and I had a dinner reservation so we sat at the bar and had a drink while we waited for our table. The second we got to the bar a white man in his mid forties wearing a grey hoodie began yelling at us and asked my husband if he was looking for trouble because he was gonna find it. We assumed he was just drunk and turned our backs to him in the hopes that he would just leave us alone. Moments later he came up to my husband and pushed him from behind. He pushed him so hard that he also slammed me against the bar spilling my drink. (Hotel and bar staff please feel free to review the camera footage. Time of incident was approximately 8:00pm on 12/25/23). The most shocking part to me was the fact that the bartenders and staff watched and did nothing while this man pushed us and began threatening us so much so that we had to leave the bar. I told the bartender we didn't feel comfortable staying while he was yelling at us. She seemed very apathetic towards the whole issue. She didn't say a word. I went to the hotel front desk to report the incident. The manager was brought out and I spoke to him informing him what had happened. He asked if I could go and point out the gentleman that did this for security. I said yes and walked back in the bar with security (a man and a woman). I explained what happened while we walked back to the bar. When we got to the bar, I pointed out the gentleman to security. He got up instantly and put his hood over his head and put his head down and proceeded to walk out of the bar with an elderly man who he was dining with. I followed behind them, and so did Security . We watched them go into the hotel elevator. I asked Security if they were going to do anything about the assault that took place. The security looked at each other and didn't say a word. I asked why did they let him go without even talking to him about the incident? To which they replied "we need to talk things over with the hotel manager first." So essentially the man shoved us, proceeded to walk right in front of security and back up to his room with NO accountability for his actions. I have been coming here for years and have never experienced such blatant disrespect let alone physical aggression. I understand that you cannot control the actions of patrons, especially when people are drunk and have clearly been over served, but it's very disappointing to see how the hotel and security handled this situation. Instead of confronting the man who assaulted us they did nothing. Which in my eyes shows they don't really care about the safety and wellbeing of their hotel guests and those dining in their establishment. We made the decision to leave because we didn't want to stick around since the mad was clearly unstable and aggressive and didn't want to risk what could potentially have unfolded if he came down from his room looking to attack us again. This is a nice hotel and I expected better from the staff. Like I said I know you can't control the actions of others but to let a man like that go is dangerous and shameful. I certainly hope no one else happens to cross paths with him while he is drunk and angry. Please think twice before staying at a hotel that clearly does not care for the safety of...

What a place it used to be.We have been going to ST for 23 years. About 3 years ago something changed.Christmas night 2023 was at best awful. Our reservation was at 4pm dinner not offered until 4:30. We ordered appetizers but we're urged to order from lunch menu because of some computer things. So, soup onion and chowder were tepid at best. No clean glasses for a beer. Wait staff had to run down a flight of stairs to the kitchen so warming the soup was of no use. Pastrami was nasty, tasted like thick sliced ham. Burger was good but by the time it came to table, like everything else, they were cold, couldn't eat them. The waiter told us that there used to be a dumbwaiter to bring hot food up from kitchen but it had been closed, now they run up and down the stairs for the food. No food domes or anything to keep food warm. Sorry, they did not have the beers that were requested so we settled for what the had. Not one thing that requested could be filled, we settled for what we could get. Nothing was hot and honestly, nothing was very good, maybe if it had been hot it would have been more palatable. Every time the waiter came back to let us know they didn't have our choice from your menu, he got upset. We walked out to see your beautiful lobby in hopes to spend New Years Eve there but there appeared to be rodent traps all along the 2 and floor. Some were draped with napkins, presumably by guests?? Could they not be placed out of sight? Just a terrible experience and certainly NOT the place we've come to love so much over the years. Your management should be ashamed for allowing this place gorgeous place slide so badly. My husband asked if anyone else was complaining and the waiter told us there were quite a few complaints. The table next to us had been empty until the end of our stay . A group of 3 elderly people were seated there and one of them said there was something underfoot so they pulled out their phone flashlights and they proceeded to pick u large food items up from the floor, an olive, part of an old sandwich. Nothing was acceptable but they took our $300 bucks! I'm so sorry to say that I'll go to a chain restaurant before I go back there. My husband is from a prominent Denver family and we remember back in the day when his parents were welcomed there like family as were people who weren't known. This is just sad. To watch this magnificent place be treated like this is shameful. Sadly, we will no longer patronize your establishment and we'll hold our memories of #shipstavern in our hearts. Very...
