We stopped by The Traveler Collections for dinner one evening during a recent trip to Fredericksburg. What an amazing little place. The restaurant is located inside an old house along Main Street. The front room is 1/2 lounge area, 1/2 dining room, plus the bar area. There are two side dining rooms, the “green” room and the “red” room. Even the bathroom is cool! Great vibe and good music throughout the evening. Luckily, we got there early, and we’re able to walk in without a reservation and sit at the bar. The restaurant was short-staffed, "staff on vacations" we were told, quite a few customers had difficulty enduring the service. They needed several other people there!
Our bartender/waiter was Harper, and he did a fantastic job that evening, even though the place got really busy. The craft cocktail selection is extensive and very imaginative, many fun and exciting concoctions. We decided to start with The Navigator and a Banana Old Fashioned, both of which were delicious. The Navigator is a gin cocktail, with citrus and honey, a dash of grapefruit bitters and egg whites. Quite a tasty treat! The Banana Old Fashioned is a rum mixture, with some allspice, banana liqueur and walnut bitters. Delicious! We were also served a small amuse bouche of plantain soup that was a great first taste of things to come.
After discussing the food menu with Harper, our food choices began with the duck spring rolls and the truffled burrata. The duck was perfectly prepared, and the spring rolls fried hot, not greasy at all. A side sweet and sour sauce on the side. The burrata ball was served well chilled, truffle pearls on top, drizzled with a nice balsamic reduction and served with thin garlic toast. Both dishes rate: amazing!
Round two of cocktails included a Floating Petals, a vodka drink with very herbaceous notes, and the Volcano Ashes, a tequila/coconut/orange blend with black lava sea salt sprinkled on top. Both drinks were so good!
We split the crispy chicken entree, a fried chicken breast atop risotto, covered with prosciutto and smoked gouda cheese. Delicious, but a bit salty for our taste. Almost every ingredient had a salt component, and the cumulative effect was the saltiness. For dessert we chose the Tierrita, a parfait glass filled with chocolate mousse and cookie crumbles... sweet and tasty, topped with a huge strawberry! A glass of local Texas Sangiovese accompanied the dessert and was a good pairing!
So many other good things on the menu, we’d definitely go back to try more, cocktails and food! Recommend The Traveler...
Read moreExtremely disappointed by this place; we booked a reservation for cocktails based on good reviews during a weekend trip to Fredericksburg. From the second we walked in the door things seemed off; there was no staff to be seen and multiple people seemed to just be waiting for someone to greet them. We walked to the bar to try to get help and they reacted like it was the first day the place had been opened. One of the servers finally seated us for our reservation, which is when things really went downhill. We ordered two cocktails; that was the last we saw of any employee at the restaurant for 30 minutes. Finally, 35 minutes after sitting down, he came back....with one of the two cocktails we had ordered. It took another 10 minutes for the second cocktail to arrive, by which point we had finished the first one. The first drink (Navigator) was honestly awful, poorly mixed and just tasted like citrus and egg white with no flavor or gin. The second drink (Carmen San Diego) was better but not worth waiting 45 minutes for. After the second drink we immediately closed out and left. Basically every party there seemed to be having a similar experience. The group of four next to us received their four cocktails in three different deliveries, each more than ten minutes apart.
I'm assuming they were just very understaffed, but frankly this was disastrous for a place that seemed like it had previously had good reviews and not a place I would recommend to anyone. In addition to the service issues, the vibe of the staff, the weird welcome situation, and the whole bizarre decoration / vibe of the place just was not appealing. ...
Read moreDO NOT EAT HERE!!! Had dinner with my daughter & husband yesterday. Our reservation was at 6:30pm & didn’t receive our entrees until after 7:30pm. Service is/was terribly slow. So much so that we almost left prior to our meals arriving. I wish we had. That evening I started feeling nauseated. And the next morning I had diarrhea & my daughter was vomiting. I called the restaurant to notify them. Expected they’d take some responsibility & refund a portion (if not all of the meals). They did not! Only apologized that their food made us sick. Slow service + food poisoning. Would advise not to dine here!
I expected your response. How dare you call me a liar!! I did no such thing. Your team obviously lied to you. And certainly did not do any of the things you pretend that they did. Service was poor. And in my opinion did not warrant the tip that I Did leave. The wait was beyond long. I wouldn’t fathom coming to that establishment ever again, despite the manager’s (Jennifer) effort to get us to come back in & dine again. Furthermore, No we didn’t want any desserts there. The appetizer & dessert were relatively the same price. So refunding the appetizer was the least the could do for the extensive time it took to receive our meals. I was not rude in any way, shape, form or fashion. But did ask when/how long it would be before receiving our meals. If your team felt uncomfortable, then that is a direct reflection of your poor training.
Customer “Martha San Miguel” also reports that she had a lengthy wait of over 40 minutes without service...
