We moved here from New England and we're excited to find Ipswich whole belly clams!! Was looking forward to having them again!! We went for lunch on Tuesday. We got the clam roll ( $28) and fish and chips ( $24) as well as 2 bowls of chowder ( $12 each). No cup available. The atmosphere was very nice. The chairs, very comfortable but it did get VERY loud and hard to have a conversation as it filled up. Our waitperson was very nice but did not refill our water glasses and they are way too small, when you don't order a drink of some sort you're stuck with a tiny juice glass with no ice. It would have been nice to have our water glasses refilled regularly throughout our meal. Another waitress stopped by and filled them, noticing they were empty. To start, they brought out a sample of their fish dip...which was REALLY good! The chowder then came out first. It was a great consistency and very creamy/rich. A bit too much butter for me and I believe there is Sherry in it, which I don't like the flavor of in a traditional "New England Clam chowder". There was also a BIG Bay Leaf in mine...lucky me! I would not order again. The entrees took a LONG time to come! Everyone around us ( who came later) got their food first and was finishing by the time we got ours. Weird. The seafood was very oily looking when it was served. The clams were oily and NOT crisp at all. They were overcooked and I got a few with sand in them, gross!! Honestly, they tasted a little 'fishy' and maybe not so fresh. They were, for sure, poorly cooked. Their tartar sauce isn't a traditional one ( has capers in it) and I didn't like that it didn't come on the side, it was spread on the bread under the clams. The bread was a buttered, top slit style roll. Not just a New England style hot dog bun. It was fluffy and very good. I regret not getting a lobster roll instead as the next table had them and they looked great!! My hubs had fish & chips. It was also very greasy looking but the Cod fish inside was goodand cooked well. Just 2 small pieces though. Cole slaw was good with both entrees. The fries/chips were nothing special. The seasoning on them was tasty but they were WAY too greasy to enjoy, really. I'm not sure the cooking oil was hot enough with everything being so greasy! Overall, this was a VERY disappointing first visit. Especially the clams. I wanted to love the clams here, I REALLY did!!! I've missed Ipswich, whole belly fried clams since moving away 11 years ago but these bore NO resemblance to the ones up in MA... neither in taste nor appearance, sadly. Parking is a bit of a hassle (only a few spots right by the restaurant) but if you don't mind walking a block or two, it's no big deal. Nice area to walk in! Very disappointed in the quality of our food, especially given the price...
Read moreVisited with my wife. Completely understand the no reservation and told the hostess we specifically wanted the window seats and was willing to wait longer for the seats. We arrived when we were texted our seats were available only to find out that someone in front of us decided they “didn’t like their seat” so they were able to take our seats right in front of us at the window. My wife and I rushed out of the location we were at while waiting to ensure we were courteous and prompt. When we arrive we were told “we can’t tell them no” and was pushed to another table or told “they aren’t going to get up for a while so I can add you back to the list bust can’t promise anything”. Absolutely horrible experience when specifically noted we only wanted to sit by the window. My wife and I only go out once every few months and specifically wanted a certain experience. I had planned something special for that viewing point for some upcoming personal event and it was completely ruined!! I invested $100’s of dollars to make this happen and just because I could not have the seats I needed when assured I would be able to ruined the night and cost me money I can not get back. I expect more from a company Telstra ting Sobys and Carl as whole. Very disappointed and I will look for other locally owned location that are more focused on hospitality rather than pushing through their guests like dollar signs. You have lost a customer that visits multiple of your...
Read moreHad a fabulous time and great dinner here last night before going to see Heart. Keel was an awesome waiter and took great care of us. He was very engaging and knowledgeable about the oysters. He started us with a sample of the smoked Mahi fish dip which was really good and he explained the varietal of oysters available that just came in the day before, noting how they are arranged on the sheet from sweetest to briniest. I had a dozen of chilled oysters on the half shell, enjoying 4 each of the Olde Salt, Wellfleet, and Boomamota oysters. For a newbie to eating raw oysters, his help was greatly appreciated. I have found that I really enjoy the brinier, plumper oysters and these were spot-on. My hubby had the catch-of-the-day sandwich (which was Mahi) blackened with fries but without the bun (due to having dental surgery to remove all uppers which has him sticking to soft foods for several weeks). Keel was so accommodating when he understood my hubby's needs and ensured all was tender including the fries which my hubby wasn't going to get due to limited chewing ability but Keel assured him they would be soft enough to eat and they were! The fish wash flavorful and super moist. Everything about the meal and experience was top shelf. Really would have loved a slice of their key lime pie and to try their cheddar hushpuppies but that will be for our return visit once my hubby gets...
