The server was super sweet and attentive - all the staff I interacted with were really nice! I would have liked to try some of the food, but I have dietary needs that they were unable to accommodate. Not a ton of gf options, which is understandable it’s a biscuit place! But they offer a gf waffle and I was excited to try it. I ordered the chicken & waffles but wanted a gf waffle. They have a vegan version of it with the gf waffle and an oyster mushroom “chicken”, so I thought if I paid a little extra I could substitute a gf waffle for the regular chicken (mushroom thing did not sound appealing). The server informed me that there is breading on the chicken, which I was fine w bc while I limit gluten, I’m not celiacs and can have a little. He went and checked with someone, assuming management and kitchen, and they informed me they could not substitute the gf waffle. This felt a little bit unnecessary to me. I doubt the chicken and waffles are pre assembled. It doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to place the chicken on a different waffle. If the issue was how to charge for it, I’ve worked in restaurants for years and I know there are ways to charge for things that aren’t pre set in the system, or to just charge for something else of a similar price. It felt like they didn’t want to accommodate me so they didn’t. That’s their right, but I did not want to spend money at a place that couldn’t offer a pretty simple accommodation. Food is expensive and I only want to spend money like that if it’s really worth it. None of the other options for gf (salad…) were worth it to me, and I was put off by the refusal to accommodate a simple dietary need. So I left without ordering anything. Sorry to the kind server who was caught in the middle, I know it’s not your fault! This is a management and business policy that I have a problem with. Y’all should consider allowing a gf waffle for an up charge.
Sometimes I think there’s an assumption that gf is a trend or that if you don’t have a hard celiac allergy it’s not real, but I have to limit gluten due to other health issues that I don’t feel like discussing with restaurant staff. I am able to have some once in a while but don’t want to overdo it. It felt like there was an attitude of not believing this is a health issue for me bc I can have some but not a ton of it. It made me feel small, honestly. We should really try better as a society to accommodate ppls health needs & disabilities and not make assumptions about other ppls health. Maybe I’m reading into it, but I left that interaction feeling badly when I was literally just trying to spend money on some breakfast.
Not trying to stop anyone from going to this restaurant, and again staff was super nice. Food looks like it’s good. Just needed to say my piece about dietary accommodations cuz it’s hard to participate in this piece of social life when you have strict...
Read moreI’ve been wanting to try Biscuits and Jams for a while and I was happy when they opened their downtown location which is much closer to me. I arrived at about 12:45 on Sunday which I expected to be busy. It wasn’t when I got there. I was waiting a while for my party. As I waited more people came. And more people came. I was never greeted, but I wasn’t at the hostess stand or anything. But it turned out that /nobody/ was greeted when they came in. No “Hello!” or “Just a minute” or even “Hey guys, we’re really busy, it’ll be a few minutes.” Just nothing. After a long time of waiting with absolutely no acknowledgment at all an intrepid young lady took it upon herself to find us all help and get the hostess to greet and seat us.
After that it was a bit of chaos because more people coming inside were confused and a bunch of people had been waiting a long time. One couple gave up and left. The hostess began turning people away, even one guy who was on his own and could have sat at the bar top. My friends and I were allowed to sit.
We sat for a while at a bare table with our menus. Finally the waitress came to take orders and she was helpful with suggestions. We each ordered mimosas and a brunch entree. The waitress came back with our mimosas and left. After that she was never seen again.
We waited and chatted and waited and then we realized we were waiting… and waiting. It was over a half hour. Like I said we never saw the waitress during this time. No checking in, no updates, no asking if we wanted more mimosas, no nothing until my friend finally flagged her down to follow up.
A few minutes after that, the food came and my plates were hot. They cooled a bit as we waited for silverware so we could actually eat. No butter for the biscuits or waffles were given. Just forget getting anything that wasn’t on the table. My friend even had to chase down her strawberry jam.
We all agreed that the food was good but not wait an hour good. There’s lots of places downtown where you can get chicken and waffles and French toast and mimosas. Unfortunately, the service makes this place a miss. More communication is needed. That’s all.
There’s an automatic 18% gratuity and I did appreciate how it broke down the distribution. This place was fine to try once but I’ll stick to better Memphis breakfast staples. I was...
Read moreUpon arriving, we were greeted by the host and sat immediately. Me and my guest were enjoying the ambiance and atmosphere of the place so it took us a while to decide on food. Our server was friendly and even recommended certain dishes. After waiting about 32 minutes for our food in an empty restaurant we were a little concerned. As soon as the food came out..it all went downhill. My guest ordered the BLT Panini and it was almost comical when it came out. The sandwich literally only had the meat and eggs on it.?? I ordered the hearty bowl and a blueberry hill waffle. The bowl was interesting. No flavor, hard scrambled eggs and cold cheese on top. Another waitress brought out our waffle and accidentally spilled sauce all on it and didn’t even apologize…just walked right back to the kitchen with the plate in her hand. Five minutes into waiting for our server which was no where to be seen..my guest asked where everything else was on their sandwich. Our server picked the plate up and said not one word. I don’t understand, we were nice about the mistakes but it seemed like the employees didn’t want to own up to theirs. As soon as my guest and I overheard the kitchen and front staff make a fuss about remaking the sandwich which wasn’t right to begin with. (And the waffle) We ultimately made the decision to dine somewhere else. I completely understand mistakes happen and sometimes people have off days. I didn’t understand or appreciate that we were treated like we were the problem. Please train your staff to be more professional and hospitable towards your guest. When there is an issue, make sure your guest are satisfied. Especially when it’s your fault. I’ve been completely transparent about my experience and I don’t think I’d return...
