Went here to kick off my cousin's birthday weekend - yes, it's an entire weekend!
As usual, my honey and I were the first to arrive. I am very "not cuban" that way. The hostess said she would be happy to seat us but if we would like, we could sit at the bar - so to the bar we went!
The bar is very cozy and beautifully decorated with a gorgeous picture of Santorini as a backdrop. I checked in on Yelp and viola! Free glass of champagne! Woot Woot!
The manager, Vasilio, was the one who tended to us at the bar and he could not have been more awesome. He offered to bring us some bread (which was OUTRAGEOUS by the way - sooooo good!) while we waited for the latecomers. He is from Greece which explains why you really get an authentic feel in this tiny little gem. There are lots of details in the decor which he was happy to explain and share with us.
When our party arrived, we were very promptly seated and given menus. Even the menu is pretty! Everyone got champagne - thank you Poseidon! - so now we were all ready to get our food on.
We ordered the flaming cheese and yes, it is cheese that they light on fire. It was so darn good our table scarfed it down within minutes and had to order another one. We also had the greek salad which was very fresh and delicious. Huge chunks of ripe tomato and lots of onion.
The hummus platter is great! 4 different types of hummus to enjoy and the pita bread was warm and soft, just how I like it! My cousin ordered the lentil soup and it had a great little kick to it which was a nice deviation from the norm.
For dinner I had the chicken skewers and they were, quite literally, the best I've ever had in a greek restaurant. They were grilled to perfection. It came with a side of mushrooms which were so good I could have easily ordered more. The rice was very good and was sprinkled with cheese. Yum.
For dessert we had a chocolate tort and it was very light yet decadent. Thick on the bottom with an airy mousse on top. They were so sweet and came out with sparklers for my cousin's birthday.
All in all, it was a great experience. The service is wonderful. the food is top notch and very reasonably priced (huge portions by the way), and there is street parking and the garage on 12th. I will most definitely be back and if you're in the area,...
Read moreNasty places. Went to this restaurant around 3pm for first day arrival of Miami. Didn't think we will ever have such a terrible dining experience with a restaurant. (If you wanna mention countless Chinese restaurants in US, I know it, but they only got rated at 2-3 stars, high end Chinese restaurants, welcome to NYC,queens,Brooklyn :) )No other customers there except us. First of all,a fly greeted us and Then the flash girl (you will know why later) approached us and we ordered spiced mussels appetizer; salad with figs, sesame seeds; seared tuna. Everything looks great (my girl was even appraising its decoration)until the other 2 dishes came, they are not tasty at all. Ok I understand this food is from different culture, I respect that. Also at 3pm , everyone is supposed to enjoy the sun of the beach at Miami. But as restaurant no server all the time during our dining (clearly the girl gone nowhere) we ended up asking someone who is cleaning table outside to get our bill and it was forced to charge 20% gratitude.(76+14=90, 6$ tax, I am Chinese don't doubt my math :) ). No service deserve 20%?( we the yellow skin people look like aboard visitors, easily fooled like this and pay it blindly and then tip 10% like some others do???????? Nick young meme) I am often teased by my girl that I overtipping . Well today is a perfect example to show I don't tip for trash service . I had to persuade the busboy(server?) to call his boss to ask a solution for this cuz I ain't gonna pay for no service ( they gave us a free small fours pieces pie, is that the reason you charge me??? I can speak with you restaurant crews for one hour by consuming my calories and can that be counted as 40$ coupon then by following the same funny logic??) . We ended up paying cash and gone. Still remember the busboy (he is kind enough to help us though, but just too little privilege that he has , he kept saying he can't cancel the 20% charge neither do other servers except the owner, then the owner charge for 100% tips and we have to pay or wait the owner to show up and argue? ). Miami is a vacation place. But I supposed people are just too kind to rate services honestly. I don't mind being the pioneer to warn some folks looking for real suggestion. Do n't ever step in this...
Read moreHey, have you ever had a meal that ruined it for the rest of your life? A dish that was so good, it set you up for disappointment every time you tried it again? Well, for me, it was grilled octopus in Santorini, Greece.
I had arguably the best grilled octopus in the world. The fish is locally caught from the depths of the volcanic caldera and sun-dried by the dock before they cook it. As most know, octopus needs to be boiled before it should be grilled (or cooked otherwise). It’s a dish easy to mess up; if you boil it for too long, it becomes rubbery, and if you don’t boil it long enough, it’s hard.
For the most part, I brace for disappointment every time I order octopus at a restaurant because of the inevitable comparison with the Santorini perfection. But with the eternal optimism, I keep searching for perfection outside the Greek isles.
Well, my search is over! Yesterday, as our first dish, we had octopus perfection at Poseidon Greek Seafood Restaurant. They grilled it and served it with lemon, Greek oregano-mint pesto, garbanzo beans, and a garlic / citrus alioli.
For our entree, we picked from their extensive menu a traditional dish and one more unique to the chef’s liking. For the traditional dish, we had Moussaka made with Wagyu beef. It was prepared traditionally with layers of eggplant and zucchini topped with a rich béchamel sauce.
The unique entree, which was a new selection for me, was cod fish meatballs (Youvarlakia). They served them in a deep, colorful clay plate over a bed of orzo in a cod fish broth with vegetables. The broth complemented the lightly breaded cod meatballs perfectly.
Both the hearty Moussaka and the crispy Youvarlakia were exquisite, and I highly recommend them.
For dessert, we had Bougatsa, which is a baked, crispy phyllo dough filled with cream custard, topped with cinnamon. It was served hot and à la mode.
To end our dining adventure, we had a refreshing shot of Mastika. It’s a liqueur with a delightful pine or cedar-like taste. It’s made from the resin of the mastic tree, which is native to Greece.
So, the next time you’re in Miami, skip the touristy restaurants on Ocean Drive South Beach and head over to Washington Avenue. You’ll find a culinary experience that’s worthy of requiring a...
