Came here for lunch. Looks like the place opened not long ago. It's a hybrid of a Chinese noodle place and Japanese ramen place, which is a bit ironic since Japanese ramen is the Japanese spin on Chinese noodles. Since the people running the place seems to be Chinese, I didn't try the Japanese ramen. The tingly spicy beef noodles were good. The noodles tasting like they were made from scratch on premises, nice and al dente. The beef ragu is spiced well, not only with chili peppers, but also Sichuan peppercorn for the ma la tingle, and cumin. The pork dumplings tasted pretty good although a couple had tears in the skin so those lost most of the broth inside. Service was good. My only complaint was the price. The noodles were listed as $13, which I think is on the expensive side. Even worse were the dumplings, which were listed as $6 for 5. Considering there are places in Chinatown where you can get 4 for $1 these were definitely not cheap. For that price, I expect all of them to be perfect. However, as I mentioned already, 2 out of the 5 had ripped skin. They really should offer a lunch special with one noodle and one app. They did give me a 15% discount on my check. Not sure if it is because they opened recently or what. But, with tax, the check with discount still came out to almost $18. With tip that would push it past $20, that is just too much for a plate of noodles and some dumplings. That kind of lunch shouldn't be over $20 total, even on the...
Read moreAll I have to say is DAMN! This Ramen is damn good! I've been here twice now because it's one of those spots you'll want to come over and over again.
Appetizers - I've had both the pork and vegetable dumplings. Both are good but the pork is my favorite and above average of your every day dumplings. I get the steamed.
Main: I had the Tan Tan Ramen (spicy minced pork) both times because I like my Ramen spicy and the pork adds the flavor I want! The portion is huge! You can take this home for another meal or split with a friend too. But if you're hungry it's that good you'll end up eating the whole bowl!
Drinks: I've only had a glass of Merlot there but it was a really smooth tasting wine. I have to ask them what it is next time I go.
Atmosphere: It's more of a small family restaurant. It may be a hidden gem because there hasn't been a wait when I've been there (Friday and Sunday night). Maybe cause it's in UES but it's worth the travel if you're coming from anywhere else! Service isn't the most attentive but they do give fruits at the end of your meal. Once it's closing time, it's closing time! We were pushed out right when it closed one night so don't expect to hang out if you come 30 minutes...
Read moreThis place has some of the best chashu pork I've had in Manhattan. The first time I came here, a couple years ago, was when I had just moved To Nyc and was looking for something nice and warm since it was a cold snowy day and my husband and I had spend the day at IKEA and then building furniture in a yet to be heated up apartment.
As soon as the bowl of tonkotsu ramen came we both felt instantly better and warmer. The smell was inebriating and just looking at it was immediately gratifying. It really was love at first sip: the complex umami broth, rich and oh so delicious, paired with the chewy noodle textures and the fall apart tender pork felt like a warm cozy blanket and a hug.
I think we mostly stayed quiet for the remainder of the meal, as we both sipped and slurped down the noodles, only murmuring a mmmm and oooh here and there.
Every time we go back we always have that feeling of going home and they never ever disappoint.
And if you're not in mood for ramen, no worries, they have other delicious options that are just as delicious, like the dumplings, the fries shrimp app, or the dry noodles options.
Definitely 100%...
