This is a very inexpensive omakase ($58!) but you get what you pay for, food quality and service-wise. We came here for a friend's birthday, and even before we entered, my friends who arrived before I did stopped me from going inside early. They said the restaurant had a very bad smell, described as close to a wet molding mop or a dirty moldy dish rag. We waited until the last minute to go inside for our reservation, and I was struck by the smell of humid towels. Luckily the smell went away for the most part past the entrance, and was not as prevalent in the main dining room. The omakase sushi quality was average. Several pieces had a fishiness to them -- the scallop and the uni in particular. The pieces that were charred were not quite charred enough; some of the toppings like the crispy onion was not quite fresh. (they were already wilted when placed on the fish). The black truffle, even though it was just a shaving, was not fresh either -- still a bit soggy from being picked out of oil. The non-omakase a la cart sushi tended to be higher quality. For example, the omakase uni was from California. The a la carte uni was from Japan. The service was also average -- we could barely hear the sushi chef over the noise of the dining room, and no one checked up on us or took away our chopstick wrappers. After getting our drink orders, the only other time we saw our server was to pay for our meals. Normally we like to end our omakase with multiple a la cart add-ons but only one of us opted to get two extra pieces. They were very nice to surprise our friend with a bowl of coffee ice cream and a...
Read moreHey guys, I highly recommend you Do NOT try this ‘fake’ Omakase restaurant. They promo that they do fair price, but the size of the course is just half size of regular sushi does. The flavors was not balanced at all, and the fish was not pretty fresh at all. And the worst experience is I tried the first course, which I felt like I was biting a full scoop of salt, and I mentioned that immediately to the waitress, nobody took care of us. We also ordered a sake, no service on it, I filled the cup for ourselves. The most ridiculous thing is I provided the feedback after received Square receipt. They replied to me that they would refund and hoped I can try the second time with them. The day after that I receive the message, the restaurant owner does not admitted that, and they didn’t want to refund the purchase and said that is “auto reply”. I replied the his/her email, saying neither my friend and I received the refund. He still said he didn’t sent the Square ‘refund message’. Reading the message, we know that it was someone from the restaurant replied after reading my feedback. We also all know that Square never does such auto reply. I really don’t recommend you go to this restaurant, nothing worth, the price / your time, and they are not...
Read moreI recently visited TSUMO, lured by its reputation as a cheap omakase spot in NYC. With almost a decade of Yelp Elite experience and numerous omakase adventures under my belt, I had hoped for a pleasant evening. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing.
First, the sushi chef’s lack of attentiveness was striking. He seemed more interested in chatting with the people he knew than focusing on all the customers. However, this inattentiveness didn’t really translate to the sushi taste, as other reviews also mentioned the sushi being bland. The fish itself lacked the delicate flavors I’ve come to expect from good omakase.
On the plus side, the ambiance was decent. It was dark and spacious, which gave it a cozy feel. The tea was quite good, and the servers were notably attentive, frequently refilling our tea and water without being asked.
However, these small positives didn’t make up for the overall lackluster experience. Given the quality of the fish and the chef’s inattentiveness, it felt like a classic case of “you get what you pay for.” I won’t be returning to TSUMO, nor would I recommend it to anyone seeking a true omakase experience. Save your money and invest in a place that values both the quality of their food and...
