While trying to make a U-Turn I caught a glimpse inside the window of Zach’s Bistro - someone was setting the tables in anticipation of an evening of food. I love a good bistro, so I looked up the menu and decided I wanted in. I called ahead and they were able to seat me at 6:15. Upon entering the restaurant two polar opposite things occurred: first, the atmosphere was not what I expected, but another couple who were already seated said to me “I am sure Zach will be with you in a moment.”
I knew that level of familiarity was laced with loyalty, so I stuck it out. Within minutes I was seated at a table I would have balked at, but something about the place urged me to trust that delicious sounding menu. So, despite the table placed too close to the door I ordered a martini, an appetizer of crab cake and a main entree of scallops.
The banter with Zach confirmed my need of a good, slightly dirty, vodka martini with a twist and an olive. It was absolutely perfectly made, shaken and poured table side. The crab cake was amazing, all crab and minimal filler and it was the perfect start before a phenomenal beurre noisette atop perfectly seared scallops and Brussels Sprouts. I wanted to lick the plate clean!
The meal came with a slice of homemade bread served with a ramekin of cinnamon sugar butter. The only thing I kick myself for is that I didn’t order my dessert with dinner - let’s blame the second delicious martini.
Sure, the house needs a bit of dark decor to warm it up, but go for the food and worry about that other stuff on your 10th visit.
Me, I am trying to find a reason to be in Nye Beach again next week…to...
Read moreZach's Bistro is truly one of the hidden gems of the Oregon coast. Come here if you want stellar service, a healthy, well-crafted meal, and a thoughtful, peaceful ambiance! We came here for brunch, and at first glance, the prices look a little steep, but the gratuity is actually already built in, and you also get dessert with your brunch entrees.
We came during COVID, and found that the tables indoors were also very liberally spaced apart, which was a relief.
We had the ling cod hash, which came with an egg and little bits of greens, and the two-egg breakfast with the flakiest, yummiest crab cake and a side of tomato fennel sauce. Both entrees automatically came with bread, strawberry compote, and raspberry chia seed pudding!
We also got his clam chowder, which was one of my favorite parts of the meal. His clam chowder is not typical - it doesn't come with any of the heavy cream that clam chowder is known for. The lack of it really brought out the flavors of the clams, celery, and bacon. I would come back just for the clam chowder!
Zach served us with attentiveness and a bustling efficiency. You can tell he takes pride in his food and presentation. Classical music was playing while light streamed in through the big windows. The cozy atmosphere only served to accentuate the food. We left feeling so satisfied and like we'd experienced something quite unique. I would...
Read moreMy husband and I visit Newport every fall, and this was the first year we tried Zachs. I had read a prior review that said "run, don't walk to the bistro ". They were not wrong! This was by far the best 2 meals I've eaten in the past 12 months. Yes we went back. The first visit, my husband had the tasting menu, and I had the duck with wine pairings. 🍷 words can't describe the deliciousness. 2nd visit we left it up to him for a seafood fest. It was a meal I will think about until we can return in 2022. Things to note: 1:you need to make a reservation. When we were there it did seem to be a one man show. Reservations, front and back of house , all Zach. If your sitting at your table you are absolutely well cared for, but if you are a walk in seeing empty tables and are told the next setting is 8:15pm, there would be no way for you to understand why you can't be seated. 2: trust the wine pairings 3: The restaurant takes covid and distancing seriously. 4: Many items are already gluten-free. Just ask, there are no issues. 5: The biscuits he makes will make you cry that you don't have the recipe to make at home.
Enough of my gushing.
Thank you for the incredible experience, see you in the...
