After seeing multiple 5-star reviews for Yianni's Grill in downtown Sonora, we finally had the opportunity to check them out this weekend - and we're we glad we did! It is as wonderful as everyone says it is! We ordered the Spanakopita, Moussaka, and for the hubby, the Cowboy sandwich! We also ordered the calamari appetizer and some Greek coffee frappes. The coffee frappes were unexpected. Not familiar with this beverage we were surprised that it was less a drink than it was a frothy foam. It was not cold, but as the foam slowly broke down, the remaining drink was chilled. Very interesting and surprisingly tasty! The calimari was superb - so tender and flavorful! We selected the Greek salad as sides and were not disappointed. A generous serving with crumbled feta, kalamata olives and plum tomatoes, with a heavenly balsamic vinaigrette dressing!
Onto the main courses - the Cowboy was a hearty portion of Grilled tri-tip, onions and pepperoncini on a large french roll (I think). Very tender and delicious. The Spanakopita was absolutely divine - buttery pastry resting on top of fluffy clouds of spinach and creamy baked feta cheese - but everything paled in comparison to the Moussaka! Never, anywhere on earth including glorious Greece itself have I ever had better Moussaka! It was pure heaven!!!! The most delicious thing I've ever eaten in my life - the flavours are haunting me two days later - all I want to do is go back and have it again!!! It truly is a culinary masterpiece!
We finished off our meal with the Baklava Cheesecake which was the perfect end to a perfect dining experience! The ambiance, the service was so wonderful, I have exhausted my trove of superlatives on this amazing slice of glorious Greek dining! LOL. If you are looking for a great meal in Sonora, please give Yianni's Grill a try - you...
Read moreFinally went to check out Yanni's downtown. First good sign was there was a parking space out front, otherwise it's hunt and seek. The atmosphere is cute Greek, blue and white as I would expect, wait staff was plentiful (several), Yanni must have been the chap in the back booth keeping an eye out and walking back into kitchen occasionally, or Yanni was the (maybe chaps wife) who was hands on doing things that to me looked like the staff should be doing. Menu was an interesting combination of items to suite most, burgers to gyros, lambchops to calamari steak. Appetizers of course and the desert menu is on the sign board so it must vari some. Our meal...we went for the Greek
Appetizer #1 hummis and pita... plain hummus is rather boring and this did not disappoint pita was warm at least.
Appetizer, #2 calamari, light battered, absolutely delicious, the sauces where cocktail sauce (okay) and a garlic aioli (not so great, also not so garlicky) Not a very good proportion to price.
Meal..#1 Gyros chicken sandwich, about average but very little chicken and chunked chicken, not the thinner slices expected from a vertical Gyros grill.
Meal..#2 grilled center cut pork chops (2) . Here is where the wheels left the wagon, sadly they were thin, dry, cooked on a flat iron grill, and reminded me if a Dennys special Entrees include a Greek salad, nice size , pre-made and very good, fresh. The side of spinach and rice was
pretty good, not overly flavorful
By this time we opted out of desert, we has already spent $58 and had yet to leave a tip.
Bottom line a very disappointing meal for $70
If there is ever parking out front again, next time I'll try the burger, as that seams to be what others rave...

First off if I could give 10 stars I would. I went to Yiannis Grill with my family a few days ago. At first I had my suspicions because of greek food in downtown Sonora but those quickly escaped my mind. We quickly sat down with the owner of the establishment Michael saying hello as well as the wait staff so very friendly. My mom and dad who have been to Greece before said that the overall look and feel of the restaurant were just like Greece.
The waitress came almost immediately and took our order. I got the Saganaki and grilled lamb with dessert being the Baklava. It tasted amazing some of the best food I have ever had.
When they brought out the cheese it was flaming and tasted amazing.
We soon got our main courses which were spectacular couldn't have been made better and the owner came over and started taking with us. I loved how he didn't make us seem like we were an average family coming to eat but instead got our names, and asked about us and where we were from etc... He was such a nice guy and we had a great talk with him.
I ended up getting the baklava for dessert which was amazing.
Overall left with a full belly and...
