So I walked into the 'Mackinaw Pastie & Cookie Co' eatery with great expectations, with my family, to get a taste of the famous Upper Michigan pasties only to be greeted rather coldly by a middle aged lady at the cash register(Ok, not a problem, it's not her job to smile to every person who enters). But,then, as we were deciding on what to order, I very politely requested the same lady to give us a couple of minutes to decide(since she was waiting at the counter while staring at us) to which I was first asked to repeat what I had said(as if implying she didn't understand my accent) and was replied by "I would still have to stand here" in a rather condescending tone. That for me was not ok since I had been very polite with her. After that, my nephew, being a 5 year old was trying to grasp at one of the cookie baskets on the counter to which she gave the most irritated/animated reaction I have ever seen anyone give to a kid. Seeing this, my sister yelled at my nephew for having touched the basket without taking permission, to which the lady intervened, now asking my sister, to repeat what she had said(as if implying again that she did not understand the accent). I am an Indian and have a thick accent but I have never experienced something like this in the 5 years I have been in the US and I don't want to term it racism since I don't consider my race inferior but by Michigan standards(which has been extremely friendly/warm to me in the last couple of years of my stay)this kind of behaviour is totally uncalled for and I would rate this place a 'zero' just for bad behaviour regardless of how great the pasties presumably are. And, by the way, I walked out of this place without buying anything but she did end up screwing up my mood for the evening. This happened on 10/15/2016...
Read moreWow. Where do I begin? First, I'm a Yooper and have been eating pasties nearly 50 years. I have never encountered such an awful one in my life. The price being $12.29 PER PASTY is shocking. We paid over $26 for two small pasties! If they were knock your socks off pasties I wouldn't be this disgruntled, but man, these things were really just poorly made. They were so undercooked the potatoes were hard in places. The crust was raw, to the point one side was still white with the crust overall being very soft and floppy. This is not a pasty you can hold and eat, not only because it is so soft, but of the strange way the crust is folded. The cut of meat used must be full of fat because the filling is incredibly greasy.
We also got a veggie pasty and all I will say is that they taste like a funeral cheesy potato casserole in an undercooked crust.
Whew, it's a lot, I know. But I thought you'd like to know what you will be getting for your 12+ bucks. FWIW, we did not try the cookies. They may be awesome! But, we will not be going back nor can we recommend.
Oh, and you want a pretty good pasty, not to mention one that costs under $6, stop at Jack's grocery store in Manistique. A great value...
Read moreWe drove thru the 'UP' on our way to Petoskey & kept seeing signs for pasties. Didn't have time to go back over the Mackinac bridge, so this place was recommended by a Petoskey local.
The beef pasties were absolutely delicious! On a recommendation, we had them with the gravy - either way each bite was wonderful.
The cookies are tasty as well - hubby got 2 of each kind so we could share with our group and it's hard to say if I have a favorite.
As an impulse, we bought some frozen pasties as a thank you gift for our hosts. There is a cooler bag & ice at a reasonable price - so we could still explore the area without rushing back to the house. Smart idea!
The two staff handled the takeout process very quickly, efficiently and with their eyes smiling - so don't worry if you see a line (well, unless they are close to running out...). Lots of locals in line - another sign of a good spot.
Btw- I had originally found this place showing breakfast pasties (I'm a tourist, what do I know?), but their menu is slightly reduced now, so call them before you get your heart set on anything. In the end, I think it was better that I got the...
