One of the highlights of my solo travels was finally visiting Yellowstone—an item on my lifelong bucket list! To explore West Yellowstone National Park, I decided to rent a bike and came across a local bike rental shop. What truly amazed me was not just the high-quality bikes but also the exceptional hospitality of the people in West Yellowstone. This bike rental shop exceeded all expectations!! Not only were the staff incredibly warm and considerate toward travelers, but the quality of the bikes was unparalleled. I have rented bikes from various places before, but I have never come across such well-maintained, high-performance bicycles. Thanks to their excellent bikes, I was able to explore the breathtaking landscapes of West Yellowstone in the best way possible. After a long ride through the park, I craved a warm cup of coffee. To my delight, the shop also had a coffee bar, so I decided to try it. I wasn’t expecting much, but from the very first sip, I was completely blown away. The coffee was, without a doubt, the best I have ever had—far superior to even the most renowned coffee shops. The depth, richness, and perfect balance of flavors made it truly unforgettable. If only I had discovered this coffee shop on my first day in Yellowstone, I would have visited every morning, afternoon, and evening! Unfortunately, I found it only the day before I left, which was my biggest regret. When I think of Yellowstone now, this bike rental shop is the first thing that comes to mind. The kind and wonderful people working there, their warm hospitality, and the genuine care they show to travelers left a lasting impression on me. If you ever visit West Yellowstone, this is a place you absolutely must stop by—not just for a bike or coffee, but for an experience that will make your trip even more special.

An absolute pleasure. 10 years ago we visited Yellowstone, and I rented a mountain bike from Freeheel and Wheel for a few days. It was a wonderful experience, riding it along the CDT just west of West Yellowstone. Here we are 10 years later, and had the chance to visit Yellowstone in the winter. Happened to be during quite a cold snap (-36F as a low one night). During this trip, we hiked, snowshoed, snowmobiled to Old Faithful, and the capstone was the chance to try Nordic skiing. Which my wife and I LOVED. Melissa was awesome, set us up with boots, skis, poles, gave us great suggestions over where to try, some pointers on technique, and suggested we wait til it warmed up a tad. We were eager to learn, so gave ourselves a test run on the Boundary Trail (complete newbies). After a fall or two, we figured it out pretty well, and went for lunch at The Buffalo Bar. After lunch, we set about the work of exploring the Riverside Trail. We headed out in some nearly virgin tracks, and hit most of the Upriver Loop. Seeing the Madison River with so much snow in it was beautiful! (photo) Despite a minor fall where I tweaked my ankle, we had a wonderful time, and will definitely try XC skiing again, thanks to this great experience! Thank you Freeheel and Wheel!

I had the idea of spending a day on a bike and enjoying the area. I found Freeheel and Wheel and hit the jack pot! Melissa greeted me when I came in shortly after 9am and took care of me. They got me fitted for a bike and talked through my plans for the day. They put the bike I would rent up on the rack and went over it completely (even changed out the rear tire because they thought it showed too much ware). As we discussed route, Melissa recommended that I avoid heading into the park because of traffic and recommended a couple other options. After I decided on Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, Melissa took the time to draw out a map and plot out my route including some stops. I had an incredible day! The equipment performed flawlessly and all direction that Melissa gave was amazing. Freeheel and Wheel is without a doubt the place to go if you are looking to enjoy sometime on a road or mountain bike! And although I haven't been in the area during winter, if I ever am, I will be sure to head back and grab some skis and plan out an incredible day cross country skiing. Freeheel and Wheel is the BEST!

Earlier this week, my nine-year-old grandson, Beau, shared, "Having Melissa wax my skis made me feel comfortable when I was racing, especially in the Spam Cup. I like Melissa—she is so cheerful! Oh! And Dan—I like Dan too; he puts fast wax on my skis! Actually, everyone at Freeheel is helpful!"

Correspondingly, I believe exceptional staff behavior reflects the leadership provided by the highest-ranking executive(s) delivering essential and effective direction. Melissa, the Chief Executive Officer, founder, and co-owner of Free Heel and Wheel, sets the standard for business excellence!

I'm getting ready to ride my vintage 850 Trex, which had been in storage for 14 years! Preparing for this season reminded me of my visit to Free Heel and Wheel last fall to schedule bike repairs. Although they were busy, Melissa told me without hesitation to drop off the bike whenever it was convenient for me. From the moment I entered the bike shop, Melissa made me feel welcome and valued.

The repairs were extensive, especially synchronizing the shifting! Melissa's promptness and follow-up were incredibly helpful throughout the process. My bike repairs were completed in just over a single business day! It now has new tires, smooth shifting transitions, and reliable brakes. Worn parts have been replaced with high-quality components, and the bike is clean. Genuinely, its overall performance feels like new! Plus, the cost was remarkably reasonable!

Melissa's enthusiasm and dedication to ensure a positive customer experience were commendable. She has an extraordinary ability to connect with customers and consistently invested the extra effort to ensure I was pleased with the repairs.

Additionally, it's refreshing to see the entire staff's willingness to provide responsive and reliable service. The extraordinary dedication of the leadership and staff may be why Free Heel and Wheel has such an excellent reputation.

Thank you once again, Melissa and Free Heel and Wheel!

Stan H.

P.S. As well as being a premier bicycle and Nordic ski shop, Free Heel and Wheel also carries top-quality gear, apparel, and delicious refreshments! Plus, its proximity to the landscape in and around Yellowstone National Park and much more make it an ideal location—it's literally...

We came to Freeheel and Wheel under extremely unorthodox circumstances. We were enjoying a vacation within Yellowstone when we noticed our bike rack had begun to droop noticeably. Then we heard a loud bang when the rack hit the ground and the mechanism that locks it shattered.

We limped into the space in front of the store at around noon on a hot end-of-summer day. I asked the workers in the store if they had any idea how we might solve this problem. No potential solution was off the table; we were even exploring how we might ship the bikes home before they were inevitably destroyed by our rack colliding with the highway on the way home.

They immediately put me in touch with a local named Bobby who they were confident could help us. Within ten minutes we had unloaded our bikes and stashed them, and Bobby had arrived to assess the situation. He was confident he could reinforce the rack by fixing the faulty hitch. Within a couple hours he had returned, with a fully repaired and reinforced hitch. Additionally, he repaired the broken lock on the rack.

I can’t stress this enough: without this amazing place we might have lost our bikes and the rest of our vacation. The iced lattes and kids’ smoothies we enjoyed while we waited were also delicious. Do not under any circumstances go to another bike shop while you’re in the Yellowstone area. They are a kind, family-friendly establishment that will ensure your vacation is the best...
