The experience itself was a good one. The museum ticket actually gives you access to several sites. We visited the Pinkas Synagogue, the cemetery, and the Spanish Synagogue (plus a few of the smaller museums).
The Pinkas Synagogue is harrowing. The walls are covered with the names of Holocaust victims. Of course, we all know that the Holocaust was terrible and that many people died... but the depiction of the names upon every wall really makes the visitor grasp the profound evil that transpired. Every name is a human being who was lost to great tragedy and illogical hate. I was deeply moved and saddened by this experience - it is an important one to have, so that we do not forget.
I love architecture and the Spanish Synagogue is easily one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever seen. We were especially lucky to get there at the end of the day, when there were very few fellow visitors. It is unlike anything I have ever seen.
The Old Cemetery was also quite beautiful. The way that the tombstones are clustered is quite interesting.
Overall, the experience was wonderful. However, this is where we get to the negative - the price. I found the cost of the ticket very high based on Prague standards, and based on the reviews it seems that many agree with me. It is the same price as the highest ticket for the Prague Castle Cluster, and you have to pay extra to see some of the sites, or if you want an audioguide. On top of this, there are donation boxes frequently located throughout the sites. I completely understand that they must maintain their sites through visitor funding, and am happy to pay to access the sites. However, it would be nice to see more options to reduce how many sites you can go to, and pay less (similar to what Prague Castle does). The ticket gives you entry to 7 sites, but most people will only visit 3-4, and it is valid for several days, while most people are only visiting Prague for a few. Or, they could go in the other direction, and make the ticket include all sites. I think this would improve the experience for many visitors.
The bottom line - this is an important series of sites to visit in Prague. Some are beautiful, others are critical to a good understanding of Jewish history in WWII. For example, some of the ghettos and camps mentioned were previously unknown to me. But I do wish that the museum gave more options to travelers on a budget or with...
Read moreJewish Museum in Prague had been one of the best experiences during our trip on Vienna and Prague. Everything was well explained in English and several other languages. In that sense, It is the only place in Prague where you are not “coerced” to hire guides. We learned a lot about Jewish history and culture by just reading.
I gave 4 stars because of my frustration. I got the feeling that I am forced to wear Jewish hat / cap.
It should be clear that we were there to pay our respects. We spent money and hours of time in that region. But when the gatekeeper lady said ‘men have to wear these hats”, it is something else. You should make it clear that it is optional but it is your culture and you would be very happy if I behave in this way - that would be ok. Make it a rule, it is not.
But now, after 9 months of 4 stars and no comments, Jewish Museum in Prague got back to me and asked for what they can improve. I made it 5 starts because you deserve...
Read moreThe selection of sights and museums were lacking compared to the steep asking price.
The synagoges were pretty, but honestly not all that impressive and quite modest, while the exhibitions seemed focused more on the religion itself and on the culture than on its history, which was disappointing to me, but might appeal to others. To be fair, one of the synagoges focused on jews in prague, but the timeline was very narrow. An focused mostly on a few hundred years, and hardly scratched the surface.
The cemetery was probably the best experience, but you'd have to consider the amount of money you are throwing at it, and if i could go back in time with the knowledge i have of the Jewish museum now, i wouldn't bother with it, to be honest.
The exhibitions range from "rustic" to modern, some being better and more informative than others, but overall, it think the asking price is probably twice as much as it has any...
