I've taken two tours with the trust and both were fantastic, small group experiences. I'm a history geek, I go on a lot of historical tours, and the tours with trust are top notch. The two tour guides are very knowledgeable, they answer all your questions citing primary sources and let you know when they're making inferences, these are not people who will make up fun stories for tourists.
For context, the trust is a small organization, and I believe it's completely volunteer run. I've emailed them a few times, and they're always been responsive. Sometimes it take a few days to get a response, because these people are volunteers busy living their lives.
The tours meet at the museum, and the exploring the artifacts is fun for a bit. That said, it's a pretty small museum, and I wouldn't plan a trip around the museum if I wasn't going on a tour. Also, it might be closed if the trust is running a tour.
Overall, the trust does an amazing job of both preserving St Thomas' history and sharing it...
Read moreIncredible museum that we just bopped into for a whim. We had about 30 minutes until we needed to head to the airport and was going to check out a gift shop, as we just happened to pass by. In our brief time, Will filled us with so much information and joy, we couldn't have imagined not visiting. His knowledge is vast, his personality is genuine, and it was a real pleasure to get the quick tour. We hope that when we someday revisit with more time, Will is still giving tours, as we'd love to do the hiking tour with him. There is something here for everybody, all ages. Weird 2 horned tuba thingy, to a Smithsonian worthy bottle collection, information about pirates, and lots of really cool indigenous artifacts. Great place to start or finish your USVI trip. Thanks for that incredible impromptu tour, that was such a great end-cap, to a wonderful trip. Whatever you are doing,...
Read moreThe museum has a new Caribbean music section with traditional folk, calypso, quelbe, soca, and jazz vinyl lps and CDs. All have QR codes for visitors to scan to hear some of the songs.
There are also a few traditional instruments and items of interest to children including a book and video that teaches calypso.
Great book about sports by a retired local broadcaster named Liston who was befriended by Muhammad Ali when he visited St Thomas.
Also information about US Navy submarine base which trained the Frogmen before they were Navy Seals.
Something for everyone!...
