This review talks about costs, parking, the shuttle, bathrooms, and of course the play. 8-)
Costs: Excellent value to see a wonderfully acted play, "The Drowsy Chaperone," surrounded by nature with a live orchestra! For around $40, we got orchestra seats plus rented the soft cushions for $1 at the show. They definitely made the plastic seats comfortable and kept our legs from sticking to the chairs. Buy your seats early, since plays sell out.
Parking: The website recommends you arrive no later than 7:15 pm for the 8:00 pm show especially if you need to use the shuttle to drop you off closer to the stage plus the parking lots gets crowded.
We arrived for at Thursday 7:00 pm with a stop at the Leavenworth Community Farmers Market before. We got first row parking which was nice.
Shuttle: There was a line of chairs for people waiting to board the shuttle. We took the shuttle (a few steps up) a short distance up the mountain. It dropped us off at the porta potty bathrooms where it was a short uphill distance and then steps to the outside theater.
After showing your ticket, you could rent a seat cushion with $1 cash. The users showed your way to the seats.
The Play: The play was a fun, well acted with singing and a great tap dance number. The humor kept me chuckling throughout the play. The live orchestra to the right of the stage sounded wonderful. The theater has a new sound system, and everything was clear and heard at a good listening volume. I was impressed with the "The Drowsy Chaperone" stage as seen in the picture. For an outdoor theater, I thought it was great and looked forward to seeing how they handled the set changes. I have been to plays at the Kennedy Center and Broadway. I enjoyed the quality of the theater at Leavenworth and would definitely see a play again.
As it got later, the sound of the crickets singing and seeing the twinkling blanket of stars above the trees contributed to the wonderful atmosphere.
Bathroom: During the 15 minute intermission, there was time to buy drinks or a snack or walk down to the porta potties. It has been a while since I have used one, and they are small! They had toilet paper and ability to flush if you use the foot pump on the floor. There was a hand washing station with running water outside.
After the play, we walked down the hill to the car. There was a stringed lighting along the road to help...

The Sound of Music - 7/13/24
This is my 2nd summer living in Leavenworth and this time around we have a better work/life balance and were able to go to the Leavenworth Summer Theater for The Sound of Music.
I'm 32 and I've actually never seen The Sound of Music and knew nothing about it. I booked this on a whim the morning of the show because the Facebook page for the theater posted that seats were still available.
Parking is adequate. There is a ~10-15 seat shuttle bus to take you up from the bottom area to the actual theater if you need or want a ride. There were probably 8+ Portapotties right by the theater, which were very clean. They even had hand-wash stations with foot pumps, handsoap, and paper towels.
They have seat cushions for rent for $1. Bring 1's and get one. Seriously. Get one. For everyone in your party. Do it.
Bring water bottles and bug spray. Do not spray your bug spray at or near your seat go walk out by where you came in to spray yourself.
Now to the performance:
Incredible! I was blown away. My wife grew up going to plays with her mom in her home country and she absolutely loved this.
This is truly a professional play. World class performance. If more of the country new about this you wouldn't be able to get a seat because people would fly in for it. Every single actor and actress was phenomenal. The children actors were so good we were blown away by their talent and courage to perform in front of such a big audience! Lead actress reminds me of the girl from fallout and is no doubt gonna be on the big screen.
Awesome venue and beautiful experience. Truly not to be missed if you're here in...
Read moreOutstanding! 5 stars! Saw Sound of Music under the stars and by the light of a full moon. The setting is perfect for the Sound of Music with crickets serenading throughout the performance. The production and props were top notch, the acting and music were perfect. One of the best Sound of Music performances we’ve ever seen. We were signing the show’s tunes the whole ride home. Definitely, we will go again and recommend anyone visiting Leavenworth to...
