Take it from a local. Buy your German bread across the street, where they're friendly, at Dan's Market. I bought this "Stollen" at Christmas time for over $20, brought it home and cut it open only to find that it was just a loaf of rye bread, obviously mislabeled. Put it into the freezer to save it for a return. Brought it back to the store and the owner called me a liar and refused to make good on his mistake. All he needed to do was smile, apologize politely and offer a refund or something. But no, he got all huffy and belligerent and accused me of trying to cheat him! Amazing.
Really, the homemade German Brown and rye bread across the street is just as good without the attitude. Leave the tourist trap to the tourists.
Addendum: My friend tells me that she recently bought a loaf here, cut it open and found a little curly metal shard. She took it back to show the owner. He was neither surprised nor apologetic. He said it was a piece of his pot scrubber and didn't even offer to replace the loaf! Wonderful. Any idea what that could do if it lodged in your intestine? She also told me that, while they show fresh bread on the shelf behind the counter, when you ask for a loaf they reach down behind the counter and give you a pre-wrapped day old loaf if you let then get away with it. So the owner lies, cheats and steals from his customers. No wonder it's cash only. I wouldn't buy a crumb from these people if they were the only bakery in Leavenworth. Which they are not. In addition to Dan's, across the street, there's a wonderful Danish pastry shop on Front St in the middle of town.
Addendum: Dan's Market no longer bakes bread....
Read moreI read up on the Bavarian Bakery which is on the edge of Leavenworth, entering from the Eastside. It’s easy to get to and you don’t have to fight for parking! Come EARLY, as the breads are warm! Great variety (I went around 9:30 am), though my pretzel was a bit on the harder side (will need to microwave it) - have heard mixed reviews on the pretzels, so maybe I just got one from a lesser batch. Was MORE impressed with the raisin bread! SO soft and had golden and regular raisins! Decently priced items! I would’ve gotten a bunch more items, but I was driving quite a distance today. Great place to try out and they bake their goods in store! Super friendly staff! Will go again when I’m in the area! Would give 4.5 stars bc of my pretzel (bc of others’ posts), but will give a 5, bc they had so many other options and that BREAD of theirs! BUY SOME...
Read moreI guess what stands out the most is that the service was not at all what we expected. Besides us, there was only one other customer there having a cup of coffee. There was no "welcome to the bakery" or "Hi, how are you" and when we left, they didn't even notice, so no "Have a nice day" or "Come back"...nothing. We sat inside the bakery and had some "Black Forest Cake". My daughter said my "Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte" is much better than theirs...and again, they did not follow up to ask "how is everything" We bought some "Zwetschgenkuchen" (Italian Plum cake) to take home with us and I will say it was good! The Pretzel was like any Pretzel you get in the U.S., nothing close to a real Pretzel in Germany. Otherwise the bakery did not seem inviting at all. Not from the outside or the inside. It seemed very dated and not...
