My husband and I had a respite from an oppressive Philadelphia summer by taking a pleasantly sunny long weekend in Niagra-on-the-Lake in Ontario Canada, which is not far at all from Buffalo International Airport. We were generally aware of the town’s historical significance in the early 1800’s and wanted to be able to appreciate the town’s beauty and historic architecture. We did a lot of research and of all accommodations, hoped we could book at the Scotsman. Fortunately we booked early enough to be able to get the luxury suite that we wanted, and not that there was a bad choice. En route our air travel got delayed by over 9 hours by bad weather, but texted Deanna the host, and she said, “don’t worry, we will be here, just ring the bell.” We arrived apologetically after 11:00 pm, rang the bell and were greeted by Deanna and her Husband Chris. We immediately felt at home, shown around the building and grounds and settled into our suite with a bottle of chilled pink bubbly wine. Throughout our stay, Deanna was immediately available if we needed her to help with even the smallest of tasks and she quickly took on the role of the ideal and efficient quiet concierge making our bookings as we wished. In the morning we had breakfast in the garden and then took a more detailed tour of the Scotsman. Chris arranged another meal with his special culinary touch. Interestingly he included fresh local salad and vegetables, which were fantastic and had more flavor that fresh local salads presented at other very nice restaurants that we experienced in town. The Scotsman has been meticulously and obviously painstakingly restored and includes several sitting rooms, each with its own unique décor, color, ambiance and thematic detail. If you like chocolate, it is everywhere in a variety of shapes and containers. We sampled more interesting regional wines than I actually counted. We walked around the town discovering that NotL was even richer in culture and history than we had expected. Assuming you are reasonably fit everything is within a walkable distance, but we did succumb to a buggy ride/tour, pulled along by Edward the horse, discovering that a town on the shore of Lake Ontario can actually be lush and somewhat hilly.
We know that we will be returning, maybe during the winter holidays where everything is said to take on a festive nostalgic atmosphere. Thank you Deanna and Chris!! We loved it!! Diane M. Deely,...
Read moreUnfortunately Our welcome wasn’t so warm. We booked at Post House Inn for a Ladies Night away. I drove from Huntsville, 2 other Ladies from Barrie, and 1 from Cambridge, My three friends were away from their young children. Needless to say we were excited to enjoy the area and the beautiful Inn. When the first two Ladies arrived, they were let in the gate presumably by another guest upon entering they were asked “how did you get in here?” They explained they had a reservation. They were then told “there was no washroom they could use” after a long drive they ended up having to go to a near by coffee shop. After Our wine tour we returned to the Inn, the owner knocked on our door and asked us to be quiet as they had a guest coming in. Strange. Two of the woman were pumping and I was in the washroom. Is that loud? We went into town and returned to Our room for a drink before dinner and to freshen up, we were sitting chatting when the other owner knocked on the door and said “they’ve had many complaints that we were too loud and they had never had complaints before” she then abruptly walked away. We were mortified, I went down and spoke to the Male owner. We understand it’s an old house and sound travels but it wasn’t late and we were chatting and laughing. The owner spoke down to me, was condescending, informed me He has a degree in psychology and is a priest (I’m not sure why that was relavent), there was no solution or apology. Looking back He should have probably asked us to socialize in the common area as the bedrooms are upstairs. We were made to feel so uncomfortable we didn’t even attend the breakfast that was included in our stay. Overall the Post House Inn was a very disappointing experience. We mention Our problem at the restaurant we dined in, they were familiar with the owners and said when they come to restaurant they are pretentious, rude, and demanding. We do not recommend. ( the response below is a perfect example of their pompas attitude. They responded by personally attacking and defaming my character. I am not a child that needs to grow up I am 35 year old woman, that has worked in the service industry for 20 years. They embellished and exaggerate example I...
