Good value for money and great atmosphere. |It depends on what type of hostel you are looking for - as this is clean, relaxed, chill and sociable. |Noise varies depending on tourists but can ask each other to settle down after a certain time as we are all adults it is the responsibility of ourselves and tourists to consider each other and not up to staff at hostels, so i understand what some other reviews say but it really depends on the people and tourists at the time of your visit. |Cleaning of rooms and bathrooms was excellent so i believe they have taken on board previous feedback. No problem with bed bugs for me, comfortable stay for 6 nights. Lovely terrace and rooftop views. Lockers provided on the patio, safe and secure. |Would be better to have some lockers in rooms for future please :)| Rooms of dorms with 4 beds means plenty of space, comfortable night sleep, room for bags, electric sockets by bed. Liked how all the dorms surrounded the pool and gardens. Restaurant on site provides very good breakfast and at a reasonable price. Main square 1 minute walk around the corner for supermarket and dinner if choose to eat out. |...|I think other customers sometimes have to have realistic and appropriate expectations for hostels in South America and the standards or social life as you are paying a very cheap price compared to other competition of hotels for example. This is hostel life. Do you research and book what fits your level of standards and price. |My advice - Embrace hostel life, prepare and pack things to make your life more comfortable for different eventualities. My general opinion, in defence of reviews left about some hostels in south america - is if you want luxury or boutique service, high comfort and experience then go and pay for that and stay at a much more expensive hotel instead of criticising about small things which is inherent in hostel and backpacking life. It's important to have realistic standards and expectations in South America instead of pushing your home continents standards and expectations onto hostels in...
Read moreWe were a party of five staying at Hilltop for one night and we were very disappointed. The owner greeted us on arrival, and was very welcoming but quickly changed his tune. ||||We weren’t given the rooms that we booked, and when we questioned this, we were first told that the owner was sleeping and would be sleeping all weekend so we couldn't talk to him. We persisted and eventually got to speak to the owner. He then threatened us saying he would cancel our booking. We were a group of 5 people and booked to stay in one of the “6 bed dorms” but when we arrived we were given a 4 bed dorm and a bed in another room. This was obviously unsatisfactory as we were on the holiday together and didn’t want to make one person sleep separately. The hostel ended up putting a mattress in the dorm but still made us pay for that bed. The staff were very threatening and made us very uncomfortable. We wouldn't have stayed here knowing that there was not one room big enough to accommodate us all.||||Upon arrival, we were told that we could leave our bags in the reception area (no baggage storage available) and return after our hike to check in, which we did. Later, when we complained about the lack of a 6 bed room, the owner told us that we were supposed to have checked in at 12 on the dot and that we "just left our bags here and went away", stating that we hadn't respected the hostel rules, when all we did was what the owner said we could do.||||Rooms didn’t lock and no lockers were available which meant our valuables were at risk the entire stay. ||||Bathrooms were always dirty/floors were wet and there weren’t enough bathrooms for the number of people staying at the hostel. ||||I’ve been traveling in South America for 3 months staying at hostels so I know that this isn’t just “typical of the region”. Very disappointing, and a bad look for this hostel. Any other place would have apologised for their false advertising, and offered us a proper refund (not just $3.23USD) for the...
Read moreHonestly the Hilltop Hostels have been one of the worst hostel experiences I have ever come by. I've stayed in the Capurgana one and the Salento one and there seems to be a recurring issue with the room/people and bathroom ratio. Cleanliness is something that is unheard of with the staff of these hostels. The bed sheets are old, it smells of something bad and also wet dog (the horrible owner owns a couple of adorable shih tzus, bless their soul). Last night, the staff of the hostel partied until 7 am without telling anyone or even being bothered of the fact that there were guests staying there (no apology either from their part next morning either). In both instances, the kitchens have been disgusting. You really don't want to cook or be served food of any kind from these people. Anyway, honestly they're cheap rooms but sacrificing an extra 5mil with other hostels will be a...
