Slightly difficult one to write.||The hotel is in a fantastic position, less than a minutes’ walk to the Charles Bridge and very quick and easy access to most places in the city. The staff we dealt with were all very polite and friendly, and spoke good English.||The hotel is quite old I think, quite slim and tall. We were on the 4th floor and there were a lot of stairs to climb, the reception was on the first floor. There’s no lift.||Our room was equipped with a good selection of furniture although it was quite dated, although a lot of people would like that. There was a double bed ‘upstairs’, crammed into the rooftop, and a single bed in the main living area. The stairs to the double bed were quite steep and there was only about a foot between the stairs and the edge of the bed; the bedside table was well away from the bed and the lighting could only be switched on and off by getting out. The other side of the bed was pushed up against the wall. It was enough to put me off sleeping up there, I didn’t fancy a journey downstairs to the loo in the middle of the night, so my wife slept upstairs and I slept down. Less than ideal.||It wasn’t possible to operate any lights at all from either bed so it always meant a trip across the room at night in the dark.||The shower was a bit of a struggle to use, it wasn’t possible to get under it properly because of lack of room – it was right up against the end of the bath. The shower door wasn’t big enough and the bathroom floor ended up being soaked every night and was a real pain.||A portable air conditioning unit was in the room but it didn’t work properly unfortunately, and we ended up leaving the window open all the time. The room was sweltering.||The breakfast room was lovely and the breakfast itself was ok, not stunning but not awful. There was a fairly good selection to choose from (the cold was better than the hot) and even cheesecake, which I enjoyed!|| The free Internet was good.||The room took the gloss off it unfortunately and we were left wondering if the rooms on lower floors were any better. We think that the desire to fit too much into the space and shape available let it down. There was a lot going for it but it wouldn’t be our first choice if we decided to visit the beautiful...
Read moreThis hotel is amazing. The rooms are absolutely beautiful, the location is pretty much as good as it gets (right in the heart of the old town next to the ancient bridge that leads towards the palace) and almost all the staff were exceptionally professional. I haven't had a single bad experience here and the number of services that are offered by the hotel will keep you covered no matter what the problem you're having is. I honestly don't understand how or why I got my room as cheap as I did, perhaps it's because I'm travelling solo and the single room price is more affordable. My price includes breakfast also (7-10) and has filled me up at the start of the day and kept me going, happily, until lunch. I forgot my plug and was able to grab a converter from reception at no cost, just one of the many, many services offered here. It would have been five stars all round but I couldn't help but notice that the staff at the beginning of the week were far more pleasant than the staff at the end of the week. One server in particular seemed to take a disliking to me, I was left feeling like I had walked into the restaurant off the street and Im sure he didn't realize I was a guest at the hotel (not that it should matter) and perhaps my opinion is somehow comparative, as all the other staff had been exceptional, however, this particular guy just didn't want to deal with me. He was short with me, he didn't check on me during my meal (don't normally mind this but he did make a point of checking on OTHERS having their dinner in the restaurant) and when I asked about dessert he straight up told me that they didn't have what I wanted. Clearly he was unaware that I had been eating in the hotel restaurant, as a guest, every evening since I had arrived and was familiar with the menu and staff and services. Perhaps I misread his attitude and took it personally but as I said, comparatively speaking it was very noticeable and left me feeling unwelcome where I had otherwise had a very warm and inviting experience. This one server is the reason it's not 5* all round but don't let him tarnish your opinion of a top quality business. I would stay here...
Read moreMe and my partner stayed earlier this month in room 32. This hotel is the absolute best in Prague! We arrived late at night, this was no problem, we were shown to our room by a polite gentleman. The first thing we noticed, was a locked gate in the evenings… this felt very wise considering the hotels central location, and we felt this was a nice touch so that we could go out without worrying. Room 32 is a very well looked after, quiet, antique styled room, of a decent size for 2 people, equipped with a large fan that helped every evening. Every morning, the lovely ladies on the desk were able to do us a currency exchange, we found that we were getting a better deal at the hotel than anywhere else in town. The breakfast in the morning is a self service style one, and a nice relaxing and quiet affair, with different things to choose from for all diets. We found that using Hotel U Zlatého Stromu was a smart decision, you could not get lost on your way back to the hotel as we were so close to Charles Bridge. Most of what we wanted to do was close by, including hut not limited to: Charles Bridge, Story of Prague Museum, Canal Boat Tours, Gift Shops, the Jewish Quarter, Prague Astronomical Clock, a whole array of restaurants, and bars. Speaking of bars, if you’re staying at this hotel, why not try the Zlaty Strom Bar downstairs? There’s a couple of pro bartenders down there, Dora who was ever so friendly, and Daniel, off the top of his head he claims to know about 100 different ways to make a cocktail, we worked out the bar cost around £2 for a beer, and around £7 for a cocktail which is brilliant considering it was all made fresh as you wait, and your bed is waiting only a few flights of stairs away. Overall, I totally recommend this hotel, to anyone thinking of going to Prague, this is the one geared up for the no nonsense tourists who want a quiet, clean and professionally run base of operations for a week in the heart of...
