If there was one place I would have happily stayed in forever - during our trip - it was Alt Straninger. I could write pages on just how perfect this little pension house turned out to be. First full marks for location! It's centrally placed with easy access to all the main sites but still peaceful enough to be really quiet in the evenings. It's also just a 5 min walk to one of the parking slots - a big plus in my head when you don't want to unload all your luggage and might need something you forgot from the car. The two ladies who look after the guests are happy enough to direct you to the parking spaces and give you some nice recommendations on where to eat. They also have tie ups with some restaurants who offer a discount if you're staying here. The parking is around 17 euros I think for a 2 day pass.||||The pension doesn't offer a buffet breakfast but you get breakfast brought in on a tray to your room every morning at a specified time. The spread is quite substantial and more than enough for two people. In fact we couldn't really finish even half of it on any of the days and I must admit the little added pleasure of being able to eat breakfast in the peace and quiet of your room before heading out - was an experience by itself.||||You are also given the key to your room and the front door and you can come and go as you please. The important thing to note is that you have to reach by 5 in the evening because post that the house is locked up and you will need your own key to get in.||||The room by itself is perfect and has all the essentials including a surprisingly modern bathroom. They are all different sizes so in case you feel like you need a bigger space - maybe you can mention that while you book. I'm sure they would accommodate you.||||The house is also very close to the beautiful parks that border this little town. There is also an alternate route you can take into the castle premises which is surprisingly short and brings you right to the gates at half the time it would take you through the town. ||||They also provide umbrellas and additional covers for their guests and these are just kept near the door and you can help yourself. This was a special bonus when we were caught in an unexpected shower and needed to get to our dinner reservation quickly.||||The main town square is a 2 min walk if you feel like it or you can just sit and dream on the little bench right...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed at the Alt Straninger for two nights. We had found this heritage pension house when our initial choice of staying at Largo, which is just across the street, couldn’t happen because it was sold out. ||We drove in from Prague and at first it was a little difficult to locate the Alt Straninger because like any medieval European town, Cesky Krumlov’s old town has very narrow roads and virtually all of it is a pedestrian zone. ||The Alt Straninger itself turned out to be divine. The two girls who manage the pension house are extremely polite and friendly. They are also excellent cooks for they both gave us fabulous breakfasts. ||There are three rooms, of which we got the one in the attic. We were told that the second floor, where our room was, is the new part of this house - built in the 15th century. The actual house was built a century before that!||The rooms are large and wonderfully furnished. Even though the house is centuries old, all modern amenities you need are provided. The only thing missing is a restaurant. So breakfast is actually brought to the room by either of the two girls. ||In case it rains, a bunch of umbrellas have been kept at the main door. Your room key will also have the key to the main door so you are free to come and go. ||The hotel also offers parking for occupants. There are three long term municipal parking in Cesky Krumlov, to which you are given access. For a fee of course. We paid €17 for two nights. You need to park there and then walk to Alt Straninger, which is brilliantly located just two steps away from the old town square. ||Highly recommended. Just remember the stairs to the second floor are narrow and...
Read moreAs many other reviewers have mentioned, this is a very old, 15th or 16th century building, that is beautiful inside - as the pictures online demonstrate. There are 4 rooms, in different sizes and on different levels, so a good idea would be to discuss preferences when booking and note that there is no elevator with rooms starting on the second floor. Additionally, the CR experienced unusually warm temperatures while we were visiting, and while the old stone insulated cool air inside, we missed not having a/c (not an issue if weather was milder). We were greeted with a large pitcher of cool, fruit flavored water (delicious!) and loved the quiet and convenient location just off the major tourist routes. A large breakfast was served in the room, at a time selected by the guest, with a wide variety of items, including (for us) scrambled eggs. We had a glitch at the end of our stay, but the manager stepped in and worked hard to make everything right. This was a quiet and...
