Firstly, I would like to commend the Salkantay trail as a whole, from the van transport, the men responsible for transporting the luggage on horseback, the campsites and the cooks who made the great food.
My husband and I, who are Brazilians, came looking for an immersive and unforgettable experience to celebrate our honeymoon.
On day 4, Tupac guided us to go ahead alone without waiting for the rest of the group. He said to always go to the right until you reach a restaurant, however there were many restaurants in the place. We got lost for 2 hours near the hydroelectric plant. We went through the check-in at Machu Picchu, and found out that the guide had gone there and written off our names, as if we were with him.
Over the past few days he encouraged the group members who were ahead of the pack to get ahead of everyone else.
Our guide Tupac, when he found us, was very angry. He blamed us at all times for what happened. He said it was our fault that we got lost, that he gave the correct instructions and that we didn't pay attention. He also said that everything was going well on the trail, until we got lost and caused this whole situation.
Glad nothing bad happened to us. I kept my cool when we were lost and expected the guide's emotional intelligence to handle the situation. However, he was rude. He made us walk the train path very quickly, we were exausted. He made us pass everyone on the way, always saying we couldn't get there after dark. We don't understand what the real need for that was. It looked like it was meant to punish us. In the almost 2 hours we walked, he barely spoke to us, keeping a distance of almost 50 meters from us.
On day 1, in our first contacts, my husband asked Tupac if there were many Brazilians doing the Salkantay trail. He replied as follows: “There are not many. Brazilians are lazy”. We feel very offended by this xenophobic expression, even more said in front of the group in a natural way.
On day 3, we visited a coffee producer. Tupak gave a brief explanation of coffee and misquoted Brazil. He compared the Peruvian organic coffee we were tasting with coffee from Brazil. He said that in Brazil most of the coffee is not Arabic, it is that the extraction was done with machines, which mixed leaves and debris to the coffee. He practically called our cafe trash. To value Peruvian culture, it is not necessary to devalue other cultures, especially with wrong information.
The agency was very polite, apologized to us and returned part of the money. We hope that you will use the feedback to improve the guides, ensuring a pleasant and safe experience...
Read moreMe and my husband did the Classic Inca Trail with 5 other people. This one one of the best experiences of my life, we were so luck with our group who were amazing people!
Generally speaking the organisation was good (I will put the things to pay attention at the end but they are minor). The team of porters, cooks was amazing. They were all from the same village, from 30 to 70 years old and were truly courageous when you consider all they have to carry and do for us! They carried our tents, chairs, table, food, gas… Tents were great and spacious.
This is a challenging hike if you did not acclimatize enough and did not excercise prior. But it is doable and completely worth it! We were hesitating between Inca Trail and Salkantay and though this one is clearly more expensive you will have the chance to go and see some ruins with (almost) no one.
Our guide was okay, followed our rythm and stayed with the last one (except a few times when he had to be in front of us).
Points of attention: not negative comments but good to know
The mattress (1 kg and very very big), though included is not carried by the porters, nor are the sleeping bags (2kg) if you rented them. I had asked for a porter who would carry 6kg so I had to take out 2 kilos so that they would carry our mattresses who were really too big.
Our driver who drived us back to Cusco after the trek was not the best. We were told that he would drop us off at our different hotels/AirBnb and at first he did not want to. We had to insist and he left us 2 blocks from our AirBnb. Better than plaza de Armas but still…
Besides these 2 points go for it! It is truly amazing. We all brought too much snacks but sweets were always welcome...
