Poppins — Local services in Mackinac Island

Poppins used to be one of my favorite stores on Mackinac Island, and I’ve always made a point to stop here on every trip. Unfortunately, after today’s experience, I won’t be coming back.

I was shopping with my mom, son, and daughter when the cashier stared at my children the entire time we were in the store, which already made us uncomfortable. When I went to check out, the cashier commented that my daughter was holding a sticker — which is something completely normal for a child to do while browsing. I was fully aware she had it, and my mom was planning to purchase it for her so she could gift it to her auntie. The comment was unnecessary, rude, and embarrassing.

My daughter heard it too, and it made her cry. I’ve never had an unpleasant experience here before, but the way we were treated today was enough to make sure we won’t...

Very nice selection of stationery; cute notebook designs, many pens. However, the lady working there wasn't very welcoming or conversant with me, an Asian-American teenager. A bunch of other customers walked in and she gladly welcomed them and had conversations with them, which made me feel pretty bad. Not too long after, my parents walked into the store to buy me something for my birthday, and she didn't greet them either. Very strange, considering that this store sells Japanese and other Asian stationery brands. We actually ended up paying for something, to which she finally said "have a good one", but honestly, I felt very weird in that store. I feel very bad writing this review, but it's honestly...

Poppins is an absolute gem on Mackinac Island! From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with warm, genuine customer service that makes you feel like an old friend.
