Multiple times I've bought packaged items here that turned out to be expired and moldy. The produce is always old. Bizarrely, we went to buy a piece of ginger, but it was covered in liquid and leaked of rotten fish. I got sick after eating a readymade item here.
This place used to be nice when it first opened. The cafe was staffed, had a bunch of yummy lattes and fresh buns and things, and the juice bar also had separate staff and a robust menu. The guy who made the juice menu was an professional in the field and put together some awesome, nutritious drinks!
But then they fired everyone. The friendly staff that was super helpful disappeared, and they forced 1 cashier to run between the cafe, the juice bar, and eventually the grocery check out counter too. 3 jobs for 1 person.
They also did not set up their store to be disabled-friendly. I saw a person who used a wheelchair have to ask the staff to shop for them because half of the store was made inaccessible due to an unnecessary set of decorative stairs. They now have a wheelchair ramp, but if they had just been more conscious and customer oriented to start, they could have just set up the place correctly to begin with.
At one point when I was here, a different store owner in the area came into the store and cussed out the manager for how poorly run this place is. That happened way before it went further downhill.
Furthermore, the ramen place at the back of the store used to be awesome when it was run by Japanese people who established the menu and really cared about the quality of the food. The ramen was great, and rivaled a lot of other ramen in the area. But then, suddenly and unceremoniously, those Japanese dudes were replaced by latino dudes, and the food just wasn't the same quality or flavor. I even asked the staff what happened to the Japanese dudes, and they said the Japanese dudes still worked there - just on different days..... However, I was a regular at that time and never saw the Japanese guys again.
I believe this place has a habit of hiring good, caring people to establish legit menus and good food, good rapport and build a good reputation for about 3 months, and then they get rid of those people and hire their own staff to steal their menus and just try and run it themselves to profit for cheap.
Also, staff turnover is frequent - a red flag. When you have a place you go to like every day, it's kind of nice to feel like you're building a relationship with the folks you meet and who become part of your every day life, and you become part of theirs.
When this place first opened, the staff was so friendly! Three folks I remember well - an older gentleman who was very kind and sweet (he gave me a candy cane on Christmas!), a younger woman who was energetic and eager to help anyone who looked like they needed help, and a young soft spoken man who was diligent and hard-working. They were there for quite a while, but after they disappeared, it was like the staff changed every few weeks. And as you might notice from other reviews, the customer service is not what it used to be.
This place is such a missed opportunity. It's in a great location with lots of potential. But management seems determined to provide only the bottom of the barrel service, scraping by with a new, attractive store design and good location surrounded by new residential buildings full of customers who don't have a lot of other choice in the area.
I now only go here if I absolutely have to, and avoid it whenever possible. Even though I live on this block, I prefer to go across the street to the Deli on the South West corner, just because the service and everything else is more reliable and trustworthy. They have pretty much everything Hudson does, but it's not moldy and the staff seem to be treated...
Read moreSo i live right near this market, The salads are good, the hotbar has gone down as of late, not many great options.Food doesnt seem like the same calibar .The ladies that work here, are nasty and horrible. Espeically the Asian lady, she must be a family member, because she is not worried about her job at all. I was accused of stealing off of their hot bar... someone saw me chewing, which was a piece of bread that is offered for free..if you buy soup or salad. I was ordering my salad. I went up to pay and the girl behind the register said, " I have to charge you for the hotbar as you were eating off of it" I said , that is not true, I was eating a bite of the bread that is offered. The fact that I was essentially accused of stealing in a store, that my husband and I spend thousands of dollars a year in, between grabbing some produce (which by the way, is not great and often seems like they bought older produce froma second hand place), snacks and salad (almost daily) and to be treated by the asian lady at the front so nastily, they just lost my business. I will make my own salad, save my money and walk to a different place, as I will never give them a dime again. Businesses that don't treat regular customers will appreciation and gratitude, and just think because they are at a busy location and the individual person, is insignificant don't deserve success. We go to this place everyday... I can assure you if I wanted food off of the hotbar, I can well afford it. It is disgusting to be accused of stealing by an establishment that you frequent and spend thousands of dollars in. Especially in a city where true criminals do whatever they want. Shame on you Hudson Market. QUICK UPDATE: A day after this incident I saw the manager/owner, they were very apologetic and upset to what happened. They asked me to give them another try. I said, probably not, but thank you for the apology. At least they tried, I just have no desire to step foot in that place again. I forget to tell them that the lady gave both me and my husband the finger. She should be fired, but hey at least the manager was a...
Read moreI come here often to buy lunch and today was such a disappointment! There was roaches crawling on the buffet containers. I reported it to a nice young man and he went over to another man. I waved over to him and wanted to keep what I had to say discreetly. He was not friendly. I said to him: Hi I wanted to let you know that there are roaches crawling on the buffet containers but you didnât get here on time so that you can see it. Now the roaches crawled back into the containers. He was very dismissive and said this is New York City and youâre going to see roaches. He said it with an attitude. I said to him I was just letting him know discreetly but had Iâve know he was going to respond to me like that. I would have just let everybody know at the buffet bar that I just saw several roaches on the buffet containers. Then afterwards he said thank you for letting me when told him this. I felt very embarrassed and I wished that I hadnât said anything and just took a picture. I didnât take a picture of the roaches because I thought that since I was letting someone know it would be suffice. Usually thereâs an Asian young man who stands overseeing the buffet but he wasnât there today. I lost my appetite completely and will never return to this establishment. I told all of...
