When I first moved to NYC after college I didn’t know what to do about any of the things that one does to take care of oneself. No dentist anymore. No doctor. No Supercuts for my hair. I found Westside in its former iteration as Elli’s barbershop on 35th street. I was working a job at a ballroom dance studio and I needed a slick cut. I walked in. Got my hair cut real slick. And the rest is history. Elli’s turned into Westside and it moved up and over a couple of blocks and avenues. But the place is filled with the same talent. The son took over for the father during the pandemic and moved locations. Well- I have been getting my hair cut with the same people for 13 years. It’s always slick. Always fresh. Always a good cut. I still don’t really have a doctor in this city and my dentist is pretty spotty. But Westside has had my back and my hair from the beginning… oh and it was always better than Supercuts. I didn’t know what a good haircut was until this place....

I went in for a $20, 20 minute Hairline Cleanup (this is what I booked). When I walked in, one of the employees was far from polite. Despite being the first appointment of the morning, I noticed that there was hair EVERYWHERE. On the floor, on the chair, on the counters, and on all of the trimmers/clippers/scissors. The Barbicide container was filled almost to the brim with hair.
The barber was polite, but made no effort to clean any of the tools he used to cut my hair. Again, they were all covered in hair from previous customers. After doing my hairline, he continued to trim some hairs on the top and side of head, not near my hairline. As a result, the barber charged me $40 for a full haircut, despite the entire process being under 15 minutes (a Hairline Cleanup is supposed to be 20 min, and a haircut is 30 min).
In review, the staff was not great, the shop was not sanitary, and I got up-charged for a...
Read moreRaphael gave me a haircut this evening and butchered it quite badly. I'm visiting NYC (Manhattan) for 10 days and went to this place that had one of the higher ratings. He started out by using the machine on the sides and for the hair on the top he aggressively used the thinning scissors for the most part of the haircut leaving my hair uneven and sloppy. I asked to cut it short on the sides and to keep it long on the top. He didn't follow my instruction or ask me during the haircut which I trusted him to get right. He is a nice guy but doesn’t know how to cut hair evenly and with care unfortunately. There was surprisingly no precision. I'll be wearing a hat for at least 2-3 weeks until it grows out. Also, the price of a haircut is not $14, it's $20 so...
