We recently attended the Gullah Geecee Tour in Savannah, GA. Positives of the tour were that it was a riding tour on a bus which saved us a lot of walking as the tour covered a lot of ground in down town Savannah. The tour guide, Ms. Patt was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. By far the star of the show was the Gullah Geecee lunch that was served at the end of the tour. This was one of the best meals I ate during my stay in Savannah and you could tell it was made with love! I complimented the cooks that it didn't taste like a restaurant served meal, it tasted like you were eating Sunday lunch at Grandma's house! Areas to improve on, the tour was billed as a Gullah Geecee Tour and we thought that more emphasis would be placed on how the Gullah Geecee community was started and how it developed its own culture. Instead the tour focuses more on landmarks in the city particularly roles that these landmarks played during the founding of Savannah and through its years of slavery. The tour ends at the 2nd African Baptist church where ladies of the church provide a tour of the three levels of the church. The church tour reminded me as if we were new members contemplating joining not tour attendees wanting to learn about the Gullah Geecee people. I would have rather this time had been spent explaining the transition of the Gullah Geecee people from slavery to free men and women and delve deeper into how this culture sustained over the years. In conclusion I wish the tour focused more on the Gullah Geecee people and their culture but whatever you do, don't change that 5 star meal at the end! It alone was worth the price...
Read moreWe took the Bonaventure Cemetary and Wormsloe Plantation tour and it was an absolutely incredible tour, and our tour guide Dennis is to thank for it, Dennis is the man! As a guide should be, he was extremely knowledgeable and explained in such detail about every aspect of the tour - through every site we visited, about all of the historic individuals, the stories of the people, places, and events through time in a way that really stuck because aside from being knowledgeable, he was also very entertaining and had a hilarious sense of humor! As much as I appreciate history, I personally tend to have a hard time retaining information in this particular subject, but with this tour and Dennis as our guide I really learned a lot and actually remember it. You can tell he loves his job and what he does, and it reflects on the guests and attributes the city and the culture with an amazing impact. Not being a natural history buff, the historic sites were what I was initially looking forward to least prior to our visit, but this tour easily became the highlight of the visit! We were also shown so much more than expected which was an added bonus..plus having lunch at Erica Davis's Low Country was an absolute favorite meal and no surprise it is the restaurant of choice for the tour, they do a fantastic job and turn out outstanding delicious food....and of course stopping by Byrd's Cookies for more history and immensely scrumptious cookies packed in small bites! Thanks again to Dennis, the folks at Kelly/Gray Line Tours, the crew at Erica Davis's Low Country, Byrd's Cookies, and everyone else for this...
Read moreWe knew nothing of Savannah and this was a great way to get a good overview of the town in the little time we were spending here. We chose this tour company because of the great reviews and it lived up to those. The one we chose was not an get off and on one. We stayed on the open air bus that holds 18 people for the about 90 min drive. Make sure you have a hat or sunscreen if you ride this when the roof is off. They will pick/drop you up/off for free if you are staying at a hotel in the historic district. We were at the Homewood Suites and they pick up in the valet parking lot there because they have a pass to enter. This was confusing because we didn't know they could get in so we waited outside the valet area. Our driver Stephanie was awesome. She picked us up and we went back to the office to pick up the rest of the riders. We only had 10 on the bus. The city is built with 24 squares of which we drove by and learned about 17 of them plus Forsyth Park, Emmet Park and the Starland district. This was a great way to see the city and to decide what to go back to see. We didn't have time but if you do this tour you have privileges to ride their on and off service same day and the next day 9-5. They have 11 stops they will drop and pick up from. Our trip ended with our driver offering to drop us off at our hotel since it was at the end of our journey or we could ride all the way back to the beginning and she could bring us back. We choose to leave early since we wouldn't be seeing anything new....
