We recently had our 20 year high school reunion at Southbeach social and whilst the actual night went without a hitch, the lead up was quite stressful. LEAD UP: My dealings with the event coordinator were really uncomfortable at times. Her quote was inaccurate and incomplete by failing to mention a per person price (the most important point in the quote). Her quote is attached (she sent this in writing in different forms on 3 separate occasions each with the same information). I called her to confirm that I could charge the guests whatever was needed as long as we reached the minimum spend of $4000. She said this was correct. So some clients paid a lower amount (as an early bird discounted cost) and some a higher amount if they didn’t pay by the early bird closure date. When the final quote came through, I nearly fell off my chair – it was thousands of dollars more than expected. It was quickly identified that there actually WAS a per person price but she couldn’t produce a single bit of written proof that she had advised me of this (because there was none). Nevertheless, she refused to compromise in any way (I asked her to honour her price – she refused, I asked her to lower the food package so the drinks package remained the same and I therefore didn’t have to ask my clients for more money - she refused). I hit a brick wall with her at every turn. In the end, I asked to speak to her manager and she said she didn’t have one. I now know she does actually have a general manager, so I feel it was very unprofessional of her not to have passed me on. In the end, I had to go back to every single person attending the event and ask them for more money so that I could meet the per person amount. Luckily, I have an amazing cohort that understood. She never accepted any fault or miscommunications on her end. Another point of contention was that I could never get a hold of her on the phone. I got her on the phone first go only once in over 5 months of planning – every other attempt was met with either an unreturned phone call, or an email up to a week later answering my questions. I found this really inconvenient as I couldn’t make quick decisions due to her unavailability. On a final note, when the reunion was over, she never checked in to see if we had a great time or if everything went well. ON THE NIGHT: We found the location of the venue to be beautiful. It sits right opposite the man-made beach and is picturesque and cool at night. The staff on the night were lovely and the manager who I dealt with was efficient, warm, kind and great at her job. The food and drinks package were plentiful and really delicious! On the actual night, I have no complaints. I hope this helps someone make decisions as to whether they will choose this venue.

I recently hosted my daughter's 1st birthday at Southbeach Social's Market Pier event space. It was a simply flawless day and I'm so delighted to share my experience. Jane was extremely helpful in assisting me to book and coordinate the function whilst I was living abroad in Canada. It's not easy to find a venue that will take a group of nearly 30 without expecting a minimum spend. All that was asked of me was a $10 deposit per person, which I thought was very reasonable. The only slight criticism I have is that the deposit was not able to be refunded upon our arrival at the venue and instead could only be redeemed as a bar tab. For a function that had asked it's guests to pay for their own lunches, this presented somewhat of a challenge and in the end we decided to absorb the cost and offer our guests their first drink on us. Rob, our coordinator on the day, assisted us in providing drinks tickets for us to pass out at the beginning of the event. When we arrived, we were very pleased with the space we'd booked. Having never seen it ourselves before the day, we felt the Market Pier was nicely nestled away from the other patrons, with lovely views of the market. Whilst sometimes a little squishy due to the long narrow situation of the pier, we were all very happy and had plenty of space to accomodate our group. Meals were delivered lovely and quickly and everyone seemed very much to enjoy their meals (I certainly enjoyed my lamb salad - YUM!). Rob was also kind enough to house our birthday cupcakes and bring them out when we requested. In fact, we found all the staff to be very helpful and accommodating the entire day. We were very fortunate to have kept the rain at bay right up until the conclusion of our event after which time it absolutely bucketed down. I think the event may have suffered quite a lot if that had happened due to the semi-outdoor nature of the space despite the plastic curtains that would have been deployed. Not so much a criticism, rather a caution to any other patrons looking to hire that particular space. I'm so very pleased to have selected Southbeach Social and held my function there. The location was exceptional, the staff fantastic and the space spot on. I'd hold many more functions there if I lived locally and encourage my friends (and you) to do the same. Thanks again to all the staff on the day, Rob and to Jane.
