This restaurant was one of the three recommended establishments for having some traditional and authentic Czech cuisine when we inquired about it at the Český Krumlov Information Center when we first arrived in this historic town in south Bohemia with the Moldau snaking through it.
We walked to the restaurant from the castle hill during our excursion, but you could get here by car. There is a parking lot nearby for your convenience. As for the location, this restaurant is a bit out of the way from the town center. We noticed the building was massive and very dark inside, but that was well-fitted with this brewery from 16th century (1560?). Brewery tour was not conducted due to COVID-19 health protection measures.
We opted to get a table in the court yard though it was a little breezy. When we sat down at the table we were served immediately (actually one of the nice servers took us out to the courtyard since we entered the establishment from the restaurant entrance). The servers were friendly and prompt. My beef goulash was perhaps a little lukewarm, but it was tasty nonetheless. I can't say it was the best I ever had, but it was good. In fact, I had a very good beef gulasch recently in the Lake Region in Austria. I must say I was a bit thrown off by the appearance of "bread dumpling" here. It looked like pieces of bread in oblong shape (photo), and they certainly were pieces of white bread?! I wasn't expecting that at all??
I thought prices were fairly reasonable here. You can pay with your credit card, so it makes it very convenient. If you want to pay with cash, you could pay in euro instead of exchanging it to the local currency. It seems every time you exchange currency, you'll end up losing some in the process anyway. Most of the touristy places, you can use your credit cards these days. Some places, though, they will insist on cash to my chagrin.
I would recommend this restaurant to those who are looking for an authentic experience with traditional Czech food. I'm sorry, but I think it's really...
Read moreAfter two years, we came back, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The condition of the premises has worsened, the staff performance has declined, and the food is average. The only thing that remains consistently good is the beer.
Details: The dining area feels uninviting. There are Christmas trees, but they’re barely decorated—more like something was thrown on them, and that’s supposed to make us happy. The state of the restrooms is horrifying! It’s clear there’s minimal effort to maintain them, but they’re dirty, lack locks on stall doors, and there’s no soap.
The staff is another letdown. They seem uninterested, wandering around the dining area without much purpose. Out of four staff members, only one woman worked somewhat decently. Guests are not greeted upon entry, and there’s no warmth or recommendations when placing an order. Two young male staff members at the bar openly mocked and laughed about customers’ questions, assuming no one noticed or understood them. They weren’t subtle about it, either.
The food is just okay—nothing special—and it’s served in a similarly mediocre manner. At least the prices for the food are not too high. The beer is decent, but if you don’t know what to order, don’t expect any guidance.
Overall, it seems like this place is either slowly dying or in desperate need of new management and a complete overhaul of its service...
Read moreTERRIBLE.. DON'T GO.. We were ignored for around 15 minutes until finally I forced my way to a waiter,, asking for a table.. He was so rude beyond believe, "Can't you see that I'm busy? Can't you wait for 5 more minutes." We waited, and finally got a table and the waiter just slam the menus on our table..
We were ignored again for another 15 minutes, noone came to our table to get our order.. When the waiters did pass by, they appeared to be intentionally walking so quickly and avoiding eye contact, it is just impossible to ask them for anything.
We finally decided to leave and go to another nice authentic restaurant in the city. Even as we leave, no one bothers to ask what'what's happened. This is the first 1-star I've given (because we couldn't give zero). Just don't go...
