TERRIBLE & RUDE SERVICE - Would avoid this place! I don't normally write bad reviews, but the rude and dismissive response we received from the male host on Christmas Eve has to be noted. I made a reservation for the holiday over a month before our trip on their website & received an initial reservation hold email. I wanted to be sure we were confirmed & to see if we had to prepay given the holiday menu, so I emailed and called several times. No email response was given and nobody ever answered the phone, despite calling at different times during open hours. We walked into the restaurant that afternoon to confirm with the host we were all set for later that evening at the reserved time slot - he replied "sure, you can come in tonight" - without even asking for the reservation name.
When we arrived that evening, I showed them the original reservation hold email I received and the same host we spoke with that afternoon rudely explained we had not prepaid for the dinner and therefore our reservation was not valid. He was completely dismissive, saying there was nothing he could do & he likely didn't understand what we asked when we had spoken with him only a few hours prior. Had we known we were not confirmed, we would have made other dinner arrangements. Instead, we had to walk from restaurant to restaurant begging to be sat without a reservation on the busiest night of the year.
As someone who has worked in high-end restaurants for over five years, I understand reservations can be shifted & there are ways to accommodate guests, especially when it's the restaurant's error. Municipal House Restaurant needs to fix their reservation process and should be more responsive, considerate and kind to guests. I would highly recommend spending your money on one of the many other beautiful restaurants in Prague, especially since so many of them are kind and respectful...
Read moreOn November 7th, 2022, shortly before 9 PM, I walked past Obecní Dům Restaurace and noticed their special seasonal menu featuring goose. Intrigued, I decided to step inside. Upon entering, I was greeted by a female hostess, and I asked if a table was available for one. The restaurant was relatively empty, mostly occupied by tourists. She asked me to wait and went to the back, returning with an older waiter who gave me an unfriendly once-over and told me in Czech, “You do not belong in this restaurant.”
Confused, I politely asked what he meant, and his response was simply, “You just cannot sit in here.” I asked if it was due to my attire, and he curtly replied, “Just leave.” At the time, I was dressed in a Balenciaga taxi blouson, a hoodie, Stussy black cargo pants, and black Balenciaga sneakers, with a Balenciaga baseball cap due to the cold weather. I was surprised, especially since I noticed other diners dressed casually, with one even wearing just a t-shirt.
I asked if there was a visible dress code, but instead of addressing my question, the waiter called the manager. The manager arrived, and his demeanor was equally unpleasant. Though he reluctantly offered to seat me, it was done in such a rude and condescending manner that I felt completely unwelcome. At this point, I chose to leave.
The whole experience left me wondering if this was due to the color of my skin, my choice of clothing, or both. Regardless, the way I was treated felt deeply discriminatory and demeaning. A simple message about a dress code (if that was the issue) could have been conveyed with basic courtesy and respect. Instead, I left feeling belittled by an establishment that should have treated all its guests...
Read moreThere's no question the main restaurant (to the right of the main entrance) is absolutely gorgeous. The food is decent on average and the service varies by individual staff members from polite and responsive to cold and expressionless. (And I live in Prague so I understand acceptable service parameters by local standards). This restaurant has quite a wide range of service responses. The visit was a holiday brunch and the restaurant was quite empty when we entered. We were taken to a middle table with chairs. I asked if we could be seated at one of the many empty window or side tables with cushioned seats (due to multiple spine surgeries it is difficult for me to sit in hard chairs for long periods of time so when available I always ask for the cushioned seats). I was told that wasn't possible as the window tables need to be left open so that people passing by outside can see there are tables available. So, they chose to not to honor a paying customer's request to be more comfortable at one of the many available options in the hopes that other potential customers would see empty tables? We spent the duration of our meal watching the empty cushioned seat tables remain empty. There are many other restaurant choices with beautiful interiors in Prague where this...
