Utterly Disappointing and Inconsistent Service

My recent experience at this establishment near the Strasbourg Cathedral was nothing short of appalling. Despite its prime tourist location, the service was a chaotic mess from the outset.

We arrived at 18:20, well before their stated service time of 19:00, and were initially told by a staff member (who appeared to be the manager) that they were not yet serving. Earlier in the day, we had inquired about reservations and were explicitly informed that they only accept walk-ins.

Seeking clarification, we spoke with another employee who assured us that we could be seated and order drinks at 18:30 while we waited. Following this instruction, our party of four took a table.

Moments later, the same manager who initially spoke with us approached our table with an astonishing lack of professionalism. In a rude and commanding tone, she stated, "I said NO I SAID YOU," and declared that our table was reserved. This was not only contradictory to their "walk-in only" policy but also delivered with an unacceptable level of rudeness.

To add insult to injury, we then witnessed this same manager seating another group at a table right next to ours. The blatant inconsistency and the dismissive treatment we received were frankly insulting.

Unsurprisingly, after this series of negative interactions, we had no desire to wait for their official service time. The conflicting information provided by different staff members and the outright rude behavior of the manager left a deeply unfavorable impression.

It is baffling how such a centrally located restaurant can operate with such a disregard for potential customers. The lack of communication between staff members and the manager's unprofessional demeanor are significant issues. As a group of four, we were prepared to place a substantial order, but we were effectively turned away.

The fact that we were told reservations were not possible, only to be told our table was "reserved," suggests a level of disorganization and potentially preferential treatment that is unacceptable. We left without trying the food and with a strong sense of disappointment and frustration.

I would strongly advise potential patrons to consider other dining options in the area, as the service we experienced was exceptionally poor and unwelcoming. This establishment clearly needs to address its internal communication and, most importantly, train its management on basic customer...

One star for the delicious Reisling wine we had...

Overall a disappointment from beginning to end. Let me explain, first we arrived and stood for 10mins without being attented on the first floor, not even a "hello" when several waiters passed by us. Finally someone decided to attend, great table next to the cathedral (hallelujah). My cutlery had fingerprints on the fork and knife but not where you hold it, literally on the sharp side. I cleaned it myself but I sent the glasses to have clean one without watermarks. This is the least such establishment should have, clean glasses and clean cutlery. Then we ordered our starters, butternut and châtaigne soup + onion tart. Absolutely tasteless! The tart was frozen, bacon and onion no taste... Even Picard do it better! Then comes the main... what a mistake, we chose the "famous" 3 fish choucroute and the fricasse de Coq.

The waiter came at me explaining how to eat the fish (making a mistake in his speech that I should eat it from bottom to top...really?) So top to bottom he explained me that there are 3 fish, salmon, bar etc... After 3 bites I thought something was "fishy" in fact they served me one and a half fish.... The third one was non existant, they made sure that the salmon (top fish) covered all the plate to hide the misery of this dish. This is another level I have never seen before. Regarding the taste? NONE!

The fricasse de Coq same, just cooked in boiled water and nothing else. We both left our plate half full , when the waiter came to us asking "how is everything?" Did not even waited for us to respond took our plate and vanished...

After that they are asking us for dessert, we asked for the bill. Again big mistake in the final check. I had to go myself to talk to the waiter and explained him that this bill was not for what we ate. He made the changes, we paid and left.

Not a pleasant experience for such a lovely place, huge blame on management! This place is run by morons who do not care because they know perfectly that this establishment is a money making machine.... We tried once and never again!!!

I'm 100% sure you can find tasty food for the same price or less in Strasbourg. If you care about quality food...

What a strange experience...I was so looking forward to this dinner and made sure to not eat at any other restaurant in the city for my trip to Strasbourg so that I could treat myself while at Maison Kammerzell. Upon arriving for our reservation, only 20 minutes early at 6:45 PM, we were told we could not be welcomed because the restaurant was not open yet. Fair. We were not asked to temporarily sit at the open available bar next to reception, we had to ask, which we did as it was freezing outside. Odd guest experience as I didn't want to be a nuisance to the staff but felt conflicted as we were only 20 minutes early. We were then allowed to go upstairs to sit for dinner. Table is pre-set with stale day old bread and nothing else; ie butter, salt oil... nothing. We asked for butter, which did arrive but literally ice cold from the freezer in fast food packaging. We then reviewed the menus and ordered, food arrives incredibly quickly for the restaurant having only just opened. Escargot was good, very buttery and rich. Main course arrived and my friend's vegetarian lemon risotto was absolutely drenched in oil. My Chicken Fricassee “Coq au Riesling” Style arrived and was incredibly dry, poorly cut breast meat with extra cartilage and bone, over cooked small onions and the entire plate immediately went cold upon arrival. Spaetzle was fine. After realizing that the "fine French Dining" experience was likely not to happen, we sent the food back as the Lemon Risotto had sickened my friend with its excessive oil and I did not want to disappoint myself further. They brought a full bill even though we sent back the food after only a taste, strange. We requested that the entrees be taken off the bill, which they did with no question, and we left. I am very disappointed and saddened with my experience, I had really been look forward to this experience for days. Really a shame that such a beautiful location is wasted on such poor food....

We had a business dinner here the other night. It was a set menu, “traditional Alsace” of various cuts of pork, bacon, and sausages, on a huge bed of sauerkraut. Bread as a starter, and lemon sorbet soaked with schnapps for desert. The cold ice, infused with the high proof liquor, just gave many of us an instant headache, and we pushed it away like we’d just been bitten. Now I have eaten there before and had a great meal the first time, but this was just a caloric bomb. The chef should have tried to balance it a bit more, added a salad, or something to make the meal lighter, and with the sorbet, given us the option of the addition of the schnapps, or not. Regardless of whether it’s traditional, many of us pushed away the desert when we hit the schnapps, it was extremely strong and simply overkill. We all left feeling stuffed and a bit nauseous from too much fat and no vegetables to balance out the abundance of meat. The service was adequate, but not great with long waits before serving staff would appear. A few times we had to get up and go find them. The building itself is amazing with elegant medieval rooms, a winding stone staircase, and has hundreds of years of history as the oldest restaurant in Strassburg and a terrific location directly next to the gothic cathedral. I am sure if we had the choice to order off the regular menu, or if the chef had thought through the offer for our group a bit more, it would have been a better experience. I still give it a 4/5 because the first meal there was perfect and I think it could be better than what we experienced this time.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND (read on for story): Was recommended by a local friend to dine here while vacationing from the USA. Once our reservation was confirmed we were directed what room to walk into but no additional information. I then asked a server where to sit and they just pointed at a group of tables, nothing specific or any direction on what table was ours.. We all ordered our first round of drinks and some appetizers to start and everything came out on time and the appetizers were extremely delicious (the only positive of the dinner). While waiting for our entrees, they never cleared off the table from plates, and this caused a scene when the waiter was bringing our food later on, as he threw the plates on another table and was audibly angry, which was embarrassing to be sitting at the table during this. When we FINALLY got our food it was cold, probably because they brought out multiple tables of food at the same time and ours sat out for over 10 minutes. 3 tenderloins were cold on the inside, and the fries were ice cold. They took back the 3 plates, and re-cooked fries, but the steaks came BACK to us just slightly warmer (possibly just from a heat lamp). Our second round of drinks ordered never came. We opted to not even try the desserts or any other items because the experience was very poor. Not recommended to tourists. There are many more delicious restaurants in the area and pricing is not equal to the quality of food.
