We had a business dinner here the other night. It was a set menu, “traditional Alsace” of various cuts of pork, bacon, and sausages, on a huge bed of sauerkraut. Bread as a starter, and lemon sorbet soaked with schnapps for desert. The cold ice, infused with the high proof liquor, just gave many of us an instant headache, and we pushed it away like we’d just been bitten. Now I have eaten there before and had a great meal the first time, but this was just a caloric bomb. The chef should have tried to balance it a bit more, added a salad, or something to make the meal lighter, and with the sorbet, given us the option of the addition of the schnapps, or not. Regardless of whether it’s traditional, many of us pushed away the desert when we hit the schnapps, it was extremely strong and simply overkill. We all left feeling stuffed and a bit nauseous from too much fat and no vegetables to balance out the abundance of meat. The service was adequate, but not great with long waits before serving staff would appear. A few times we had to get up and go find them. The building itself is amazing with elegant medieval rooms, a winding stone staircase, and has hundreds of years of history as the oldest restaurant in Strassburg and a terrific location directly next to the gothic cathedral. I am sure if we had the choice to order off the regular menu, or if the chef had thought through the offer for our group a bit more, it would have been a better experience. I still give it a 4/5 because the first meal there was perfect and I think it could be better than what we experienced this time.

Excellent experience in a charming and historical building (one of the most ancient buildings still in use in Strasbourg), professional service by cheerful staff (go and have a look at their legendary guestbook including the Pope, Macron, Reagan, Robert Downey Jr, Madonna etc.). for a jaw-droppingly reasonable price (the signature dish choucroute with 3 fishes only for 25 euros, and at this moment there is this special offer: pay one, the second for free), this place is my biggest discovery in Strasbourg. Regarding the food: Signaturee dish is Choucroute with 3 fishes, totally up to its reputation. Choucroute was mild, sauce was generous, the combination of 3 fishes (smoked haddock, halibut, salmon), with their different taste and texture, created multiple layers of flavour, it changed my opinion of choucroute. Dessert: strongly recommend the chocolate cake with bergamot jelly and chestnut ice cream. chocolate cake that melts in the mouth topped by foamy chestnut cream, bergamot jelly, raspberry and fig provide a perfect balance between acidity and sweetness.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND (read on for story): Was recommended by a local friend to dine here while vacationing from the USA. Once our reservation was confirmed we were directed what room to walk into but no additional information. I then asked a server where to sit and they just pointed at a group of tables, nothing specific or any direction on what table was ours.. We all ordered our first round of drinks and some appetizers to start and everything came out on time and the appetizers were extremely delicious (the only positive of the dinner). While waiting for our entrees, they never cleared off the table from plates, and this caused a scene when the waiter was bringing our food later on, as he threw the plates on another table and was audibly angry, which was embarrassing to be sitting at the table during this. When we FINALLY got our food it was cold, probably because they brought out multiple tables of food at the same time and ours sat out for over 10 minutes. 3 tenderloins were cold on the inside, and the fries were ice cold. They took back the 3 plates, and re-cooked fries, but the steaks came BACK to us just slightly warmer (possibly just from a heat lamp). Our second round of drinks ordered never came. We opted to not even try the desserts or any other items because the experience was very poor. Not recommended to tourists. There are many more delicious restaurants in the area and pricing is not equal to the quality of food.

This historic and architectural beauty of a building is officially my favorite Alsatian restaurant. The food is delicious and authentic. The service is excellent! We first dined upstairs and enjoyed a special lunch with family. My partner is from the area. Our waiter, Monsier Karim, was charming, knowledgeable, and extremely funny. We started with the Escargot, followed by Foie Gras. Our main courses were Choucroute Traditional, Filet de Sandre façon, and the chef’s special of Veal with vegetables and Potatoes Dauphinois. We loved every bite! The grand finale was the tarte aux fruits de saison, quetsches (french plum) with vanilla ice cream. The parents ordered the chef’s special apple strudel. We paired our meal with a bottle of Alsatian riesling recommended by our waiter. It was a lovely experience. My partner and I returned the next week and sat outside on the patio. The food was equally as delicious. The atmosphere is much more lively outside. We enjoyed the escargot and foie gras again, but shared the chef’s fish special, Lotte. Ooh…did I mention the location is next door to the Cathedral? You can hear the church bells and catch a view of the breathtaking 11 c. - 15 c. architecture. Note: Reservations are required for upstairs dining. The patio is first come, first serve.

EDIT 12/2022: I won't be going here again, or recommend it to anyone else. The service has become very poor. I noticed it degrading on the past visits, but this time it was abysmal! I tried to book a table and all i got was a very indignant "on est complet, madame!" and they hung up on me! Not even a "bonne journée" at the end! Any ideas i had about say booking on a different date were clearly uninteresting. Well, if you think you're too high and mighty to be polite to your clients, you can go bankrupt for all i care. I'm sure your great chef can find a better job elsewhere. --------- Great restaurant and the house itself is something to see. Every room has its own theme, the walls are painted with scenes from the building of the cathedral or the making of beer and wine etc. There are plenty of autographs on the hallways. The food is great. The choucroute a 3 poissons is amazing. And the service is great.

Dined here on a weekday evening on the second level dining room overlooking the Cathédrale square. We started with coupe de crémant. Eating here is like experiencing history in such an old building and dining room. I ordered the traditional charcroute aux trois poissons after a gazpacho appetizer, anticipating the volume of food. I loved the fish sequencing from lightest in flavor to smoked fish. I could only get through half of the dish. We ordered the mirabelle dessert feeling nostalgic for the harvest we’ve experienced in Provence of these tree fruits. Service was excellent as well as ambience. Gazpacho could have been lighter and fresher in seasonings. The tagliatelle (which felt more like linguine) could have had more and/or more interesting sauce. Dessert was the best. (5 stars for presentation and taste)
