I visited Spreegold on a Sunday morning at 10am and it was pretty crowded. I'm guessing that should not be a surprise on weekends, so you would think they account for that and have enough staff... except they were quite obviously drowning.
The wait was no big deal and ordering was easy. We had two requests to get a sauce and another topping of our food on the side. The girl who took our order was all smiles and assured us that she is happy to get it for us on the side. When we finally got the food none of the things we specifically asked to get on the side were served accordingly.
The coffee took forever (20 minutes). The barista yells through the restaurant as loud as she can each time a new hot drink is ready. Unfortunately it was so extremely loud in the place, that it was almost impossible to hear her.
The tables were all dirty, the place where guests are supposed to bring their dirty dishes to was overflowing and the cleanliness in general doesn't seem to be a priority at Spreegold. The dust behind where we were sitting was half an inch high.
The coffee (vanilla latte) was pretty good, but the food not so much. We had eggs benedict where the bread was completely soggy, because it was served on some salad with dressing. It tasted fine apart from that, but I have had better eggs benedict about three hundred times before.
The so called "pancakes" (why use the English word if it has NOTHING to do with an American pancake?) were awful. They tasted like corn biscuits with way too much baking soda in it. Kind of crispy and just not what a pancake should be at all. The fruit they used to decorate the plate with looked like it was a week old.
All in all, it was a disappointing breakfast experience. Way too many real good places in Berlin to easily skip a place like Spreegold.
Also, your clothes will smell like bacon and eggs...
Read moreThe staff were very friendly the the place had a cool clean trendy vibe to it. The food itself was somewhat disappointing for the dear prices that Spreegold is charging.
I had the Canadian pancakes which consisted of 3 pancakes, berries, a fried banana. bacon and maple syrup. The banana could have done without the frying as it resulted in a mushy unpleasant experience. And the bacon was minuscule albeit tasty and the pitiful amount of syrup left me feeling shortchanged in the maple department. However the pancakes themselves were divine. Fluffy, light and full of flavour I could forgive the lack of sugary goodness. My partner had the scrambled eggs and bacon and the "porridge of the gods". The bacon and eggs by all accounts were delicious! Again full of flavour, and quality ingredients. Yet not particularly a filling portion size when taking into account the cost. The oats, however, were not so much of the gods. The chocolate topping was, although clearly top quality chocolate, incredibly bitter. So much so that my partner had to add lashings of honey just to make it palatable. And the oats, for what they are, were excessively over priced. The coffee was sublime, smooth and intensely flavoured we would definitely stop in a double espresso again.
All in all the meal was a roller coaster of culinary highs and gastronomical lows that's levelled out to a respectable 3*. Perhaps if you're not on a budget the high prices will not deter you but if you are I'd suggest perhaps finding a more reasonably priced...
Read moreWe came in on a Sunday for brunch and they were severely understaffed, so we really felt bad for the one waitress who was cleaning and serving every table. However, our patience ran thin when we were sitting for almost 20 minutes at a table still extremely dirty with someone else's dishes and completely ignored. We had to continually go up and talk to the waitress to get her to pay us any attention and when she finally came over to collect the dishes, she did so in a way that made us feel like it was our fault the table was a mess. She asked us if we knew what we wanted to order but the only menus we had access to were underneath all the dirty dishes, covered in food splatters. When we asked for menus, she asked, "You want new ones?" as if we were the ones who made the existing menus dirty. She left a mug on the table (therefore, not even completing the bussing of the table), and scowled at me when I asked her if she could remove it–she halfheartedly wiped half of the table and left the other half covered in food and crumbs. We had had enough and just got up and left at that point. I will NOT be going back and I did not want to give them my money. 40 minutes completely wasted without even a cup of water being...
