Humble Ground Cafe — Restaurant in Malacca

Tucked away in the back alley of the bustling Jonker Walk Melaka, the establishment serves up a variety of home-made beverages, pastries and desserts. Just like its name, the soft-toned lighting and cozy interior provides a welcoming and intimate environment for long afternoon conversations over tea.

The 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗼 brings together the two slightly bitter flavours in a cake topped with two layers of cream. The use of heavy cream compacts the matcha flavour well and matches in density with the chocolate cake. The softer plain white cream on the top gives a buttery smooth edge to each slice and bite of this dessert. Looking forward to other flavour combinations this cafe has to offer.

Amongst its specialty beverages, the 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗺 𝗕𝗼𝗶 stands out for its unique flavour combination. Bringing together the fragrance and flavour of jasmine tea, the concentrate of sour plum and a slight fizzy finish from soda, the small quantity of the drink is perfect for a taste test amongst friends or for adventurous tea addicts.

The 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱 moves away from the tea and into the coffee spectrum, fusing bitter espresso, sour and citrus lime over a base of tonic water. Its extreme flavour profile makes the experience...

Cafe ambience was very good and chill. Cake was superb and delicious.

However, the servers and workers there were very unfriendly, cold and unwelcoming. It was the first time I experienced entering to an eatery without anyone greeting you, acknowledging nor give instructions on how to order to customers. Rather, they just stared back at you and continued with their things. Basically, you were ignored by the workers there as if you are invisible. When asked one of the servers on whether is there a menu , the server replied in an unprofessional and a quite rude manner that goes something like this “Har? uhh there’s no menu, you need to ownself go order at the counter”.

As a first timer here who’s not familiar with the ordering system, it would be helpful if the servers come over and mention to the customer about how things work here instead of just ignoring them. Simple as that. The mannerism of the servers there made the whole dining experience unpleasant and unwelcoming. Won’t be revisiting again unless there’s improvement on...

So we went to Jonker Walk again since we stayed nearby and it was the touristy things to do. Managed to buy some items and by the time we finished, the mouth was itchy for something.

Humble Ground Cafe is located within walking distance from Jonker Walk so we made our way there to get away from the crowds and the scorching sun.

The cafe was designed tastefully - head upstairs where the whole area is decorated just like a small living corner complete with sofa, table and they even had teepee that young ones will like.

◾Cakes - blueberry cheesecake and chocolate cake were standouts as both were bursting with flavours and right texture. A bit small but like they said "good things come in small packages". ◾Coffee - be it iced black or flat white, we simply loved the strength of the beans used to make our cup of coffee. ◾Other options include matcha latte & kombucha for non-coffee drinkers.
