The Stolen Cup - A Cozy Retreat in Historic Jonker Walk
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
Nestled in the bustling heart of Melaka's famous Jonker Walk, The Stolen Cup is an oasis of tranquillity and charm. Our family of five – my wife, our kids Jordan, Jasmine, baby Jadiel, and I – had the most delightful breakfast experience here, and we can't wait to share it with you!

Ambiance
Stepping into The Stolen Cup feels like a journey back in time. The rustic charm and vintage allure of the café are simply captivating. Antique lamps cast a warm glow over well-worn wooden tables and chairs, while quirky quotes on distressed wooden signs adorn the walls. The miniature models of vintage kombi vans, airplanes, and classic motorcycles scattered throughout add to the nostalgic atmosphere. It's a perfect blend of past and present, right in the heart of historic Jonker Walk.
Food & Drinks
The star of our visit was undoubtedly the food. The Stolen Cup offers some of Melaka's best coffee, French viennoiseries, and a unique French-Melbourne brunch experience. Here's what we tried:
TSC Big Breakie: A hearty dish with perfectly scrambled eggs, grilled sausage, crispy bacon, sautéed mushrooms with a touch of garlic, comforting baked beans, and fresh crusty bread. An ideal start to our day of exploring.
Grilled Chicken Burger + Pork Bacon + Fries: A towering burger with juicy grilled chicken, crispy pork bacon, fresh lettuce, cheese, and golden fries. Jordan and Jasmine declared it one of the best burgers they've ever tasted.
Garlic Cream Cheese Croissant: My wife's choice – a warm, flaky croissant topped with rich garlic cream cheese. It was a gourmet delight that we all reached for a taste.
Pain Au Chocolat: Crisp and flaky pastry filled with rich dark chocolate. Perfect balance of buttery pastry and sweet chocolate.
Beverages: The cappuccino was a work of art with rich espresso and silky microfoam. My wife enjoyed a hot babycino, while Jordan and Jasmine shared a rich hot dark chocolate.
Experience
The friendly and attentive staff made us feel right at home. Their knowledge of the menu and willingness to offer recommendations added to the overall experience. The café's commitment to in-house preparation shone through in every bite, from freshly baked bread to carefully crafted pastries.
The ambient noise level was perfect, with the gentle hum of conversation and soft strains of slow-pacing music adding to the vintage feel. The diverse clientele – local families, groups of friends, and tourists – created a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

Read moreI came for lunch on 20/02.
The cafe interior is nicely decorated in a distinctive pseudo warehouse/bar/rustic look. Expect to see a lot of brown, but tasteful and trendy looking even. The staff were all friendly and spoke excellent English. It was a little busy as it was lunchtime, but I managed to get a table. In keeping with the overall theme of the cafe, the tables and chairs are made to look old and rustic too, but all good.
The menu has all the standard options for coffee, plus a couple of local specialities which I put onto my mental to try list. As it was lunchtime and I hadn’t had breakfast yet, I went with something a little heavier than my usual food choice in a cafe, ordering a latte and tofu rice bowl.
The latte came first, in a glass tumbler. I’ve already been to a few cafes in Melaka and this was certainly the smallest cup of latte I’ve gotten so far. There was no sugar on my table and I like to have one spoonful with my coffee. So I waited, thinking the staff would bring some sugar to me. Nope. After 2 minutes, I eventually went to the counter to ask for sugar. The coffee was decent, I didn’t think it was quite the the level of praise lavished on it by previous reviewers. The reason for that was that ⅔ of the way through the coffee, I started noticing a chalky texture. Nothing unpleasant, just that the texture wan’t expected.
The tofu rice bowl came about 5 minutes after the coffee. Without any cutlery. Again I sat there thinking the knife and fork would be arriving imminently, but no. Had to ask for cutlery after two minutes of waiting. The taste of the dish was excellent. All the ingredients blended well together, with no ingredients taste overwhelming any other. Not even the onions. I did have some apprehensions about the sauce as it mentioned mayonnaise, which I find too heavy sometimes, but the sauce was excellent, not too creamy or heavy and with a mellow taste. One big complaint was that some of the rice was not cooked properly. Not a lot of it, just a couple of spoonfuls, which was weird. In retrospect, it would’ve been better if I’d complained there and then, but because it wasn’t the entire bowl, I didn’t.
Overall, this is one of the more expensive cafes in Malacca that I’ve visited and I was expecting a lot better. I was especially disappointed because a Malaysian restaurant failing to cook rice properly is just unforgivable. There were so many good reviews that my visit failed to meet my...
Read moreThis place gave a great first impression. It is a very styled vintage cafe. A lot of wood and rustic decoration, soft chill balad music, that gave me the sensation to be in a Chilean or Canadian mountain town instead of the middle of South East Asia. The menu is very European influenced with a Japanese/ Malay twist (also with european prices).
Honestly, this place could easily be at Brunswick, Melbourne and you will not notice the difference.
You can tell that this venue is run by professionals. The drink, the matcha signature one, was spot on, very rich and balanced. As for the food, it is my pleasure to say that when they say that elements of the dish are "home-made", you can tell that is the truth. The flavours you get here are not easy to get from processed or generic food. It is an open kitchen, where you can see how the chefs/cooks work, it is a well equipped space and VERY clean. I must say that the chefs are very talented and professional.
However, the only low point, in my opinion was the schnitzel dish. The chicken was deep fried with skin on, which at the moment of cutting bites it was very hard to do. Also, it makes it very difficult to chew. The mushroom sauce was well reduced and great flavour and consistency, but I would add a bit more of seasoning. Also, I noticed that you use a lot of truffle dressing in many of your dishes, and sometimes can be to overwhelming and "eat" the other flavours in the plate.
So, I have some suggestions to improve the chicken schnitzel dish: If you are going to fry the chicken, just take the skin off (that's why you are battering it). You can roast the skin in the oven (between flat trays) and make a beautiful crispy chicken skin that you can use as a garnish for the same dish or salads.
In conclusion, I think this is a great place to go, if you are tired of trying the local cuisine or you feel nostalgic for something...
