It's actually not that bad!

Had been warned about the tasteless chicken rice balls that were more gimmicky than anything in Malacca, and warned by foreigner friends and locals alike not to eat it. But curiousity got the better of me and I decided that I would have to try and judge it for myself.

Indeed, while the rice ball is interesting and a different way of eating chicken rice, its taste is quite plain and the rice is mushy and soft with no sesame taste or bite / texture. The chicken is alright though not very smooth and tender. It was more on the dry side with chicken thighs tasting more like chicken breast.

Overall though, I will give this still a four stars because while itself is not a very fantastic plate of chicken rice, it is not too bad either. Maybe it is my expectations that were super low from the start, but I think it is still worth a try. You may like it.

One plus point is definitely the chilli is pretty nice with spice and ginger taste. Love that the best in the meal.

Total meal was RM 25 for the 2 pax set which comes with a plate of medium sized chicken and 10 balls of chicken rice. Price is alright, actually feels like it's on the expensive side. Do also note that they only except QR code or cash, no card...

The place to go for chicken rice ball.

You will be abit confused how to order, but no worries. Here is how: Tell them how many people. They will arrange the amount depending how many people in your group. Any parts of chicken you like or don't like. Do tell them and they will try their best to accommodate. If you prefer only rice ball or lose rice. You can mix. Any additional side dishes like asam fish, vegetables or chicken gizzards or livers.

Don't worry, the portion for the chicken rice is based on the number of ppl. They do honest business here.

Staffs are friendly and always remind us to be careful as the shop is old building, alot of steps up and down. Elders need to becareful...

i don understand why people still queue long for a meal. i would have grab similar chicken rice somewhere and it taste better n cost better. definitely over priced under served. i don even know why ppl so hype for this. why would ppl queue for 40 minutes for a dinner that you are starving? and attitude was least pleasant. if i i we gordon ramsay i i wou have roasted them. if not because of hype this shop should have dead by now. brought my wife n my kid of 4 years old. i i asked for kids utensils. staff answered we order for 2 pax so utensils is for 2 pax if i wan more should order more or bring from home.

(February 2025) We were supposed to try a different shop but it was closed the 2 times we tried to visit. On our 2nd try which was supposed to be for breakfast, we came across Hoe Kee Chicken Rice shop as it's only a few steps away from the entrance of Jonker Street / Walk (near San Shu Gong shop). This was my first and only chicken rice ball experience so far and it did not disappoint! The chicken is very tender and juicy, while the rice balls were very flavorful. I even enjoyed the rice balls by itself, which I did not expect. Since I enjoyed the meal, we came back the next day 😅 Looking forward to our next visit next time we're in Melaka.

One of restaurant in Malacca which serve malacca food, chicken rice ball and ikan asam pedas. Come earlier before lunch time so you don't need to queu, but dont come to late because this place will closed if the chicken or rice out of stock. Ladies in front will help you to order, usually she will suggest to order food by number of people who join to eat. The price is reasonable and the taste is good. I'm prefer to eat the chicken without sambal and you must order the ikan asam pedas. The price it's arround 45 - 80 RM for 5 people.
