The rudest bar staff I've ever encountered. Been living in Europe for some time and don't really expect more than even borderline rude/apathetic service, so long as I eventually get my order without blatant disdain. But this one tall bartender must have had one too many of all those shots/swigs of beer/gulps from entire bottles of wine he was so irritated to be interrupted from taking every 10 minutes to be asked to do his job at the most minimum level.
He acted annoyed to take even simple beer orders at first, then afterward mostly ignored us, and when we caved-in and flagged his attention he was indignant ("can't you see I am working here?!" ... *sneaks off, takes a shot). I know it's a tough job, but the place was maybe 1/3 full. After waiting a while to get our cheese/nuts order, and only receiving half of it, when we asked about it we were told by him "the rest isn't coming." When asked why, he just repeated that it wasn't coming and that it wasn't his problem. When we asked if we could get a refund for the dish then, he told us we'd have to go back in the kitchen and ask...when we asked if he could please get someone to come out and talk about it, he just said "don't talk to me," and walked off. We eventually got a refund from someone else who finally came out. In any case we left to go somewhere else for a second round.
We aren't a boisterous, demanding crowd...we didn't all hissy-fit for instant attention or give rambling custom orders-just beers, nuts and cheese. Not that it should matter anyway. Don't know what their problem is.
5 stars as the place with the strongest "f*k off" vibe...
Read moreCafé Schuim is one of those places where the decor draws you in, and the food and beers keep you there for another bit. The regulars are about as colourful as the café itself. We spent some time talking to several of them, which we mostly enjoyed except for the drunk guy hanging at the bar who at some point became very bothersome with his supposedly "funny puns" and jabs. Luckily another regular understood our annoyance and came to our rescue.
Upon arrival, being utterly soaked by the pouring rains of Dutch winters, we noticed quite quickly that the limited "normal" tables were taken so we slumped down in the comfortable and easier looking chairs. Which are great if you want to order a beer, but made me struggle with eating my burger (without everything ending up in my lap) a bit later on during the evening. After waiting for a bit, we realised ordering at the bar was not only quicker but easier as well and it was also quite obviously preferred by the staff. Not a big deal, and luckily my friend had less of a soaked pair of jeans making moving around easier for her than me.
They have a large array of beers, the regular ones as well as a couple of specials. And their food... We ordered the stew and a burger. The stew not only smelled amazing, the meat was cooked to tender perfection full of flavour. The burger was well made, with a deliciously slightly pickled sauce and fresh vegetables. The bread, an Italian bread roll, was the kind that doesn't get soggy and stays crunchy. Unfortunately because of this it was a bit hard and as of our seats eating it needed a...

On a cold, windy, rainy day we popped in here to get warm and have a bite to eat.
The temp inside was cold, maybe colder than outsude. There was no way any kind of heat was on at all. Perhaps due to Europe's current energy issues?
We had to order food at the bar. My partner's food took 30 minutes to come out (nachos). It was not a busy time and it was crazy that nachos with hardly any ingredients beyond chips and not much else could take that long.
Meanwhile, my food, soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, was still not delivered 20 min. after my husband's was. I inquired about how much long it would take to receive my food and was told "it's coming right out."
After 10 more minutes I received my soup, no sandwich. I waited another 10 minutes and finally told the "waitress" to cancel the sandwich.
Unbelievably poor service. The people working were ok, not overly friendly, but the wait for food was just horrible....
