The Butcher is one of the top 14 burger joints in Amsterdam according to Esquire, I Amsterdam, and Foursquare and therefor this was one of the burger spots I had to try as a Burger Lover! The Butcher is quite popular in Amsterdam spread across multiple locations, as well as shops in Berlin and Ibiza.
When you enter this location, you are greeted with a upside down hanging cow as enforcement of the name ‘The Butcher’ and once in the restaurant that introduction will still be present. All tables and workspaces are from steel with pearl white tiles on the walls with more information about various pieces of meat cut from a cow. However, there was a weird smell lingering around which I personally got very distracted by.
All burgers are prepared with Aberdeen Angus Beef, which is highly traditional. Yet the toppings are modern and some of them have an exotic touch: for example, there is a burger with truffles and grilled onion, a lamb burger, vegetarian, and The Babaganoush, with… baba ganoush as a topping/ingredient. BUT! If you don’t fancy a burger… they also have some good looking Hot Dogs on the menu...
Furthermore, The Butcher has a variety of drinks including normal and boozy milkshakes for that original American touch; and a choice of normal or sweet potato fries.
Obviously, the food has to be good for a good review, together with service and cleanliness. Food was good, it was clean (also fitting the interior), and the service that evening was wonderful. There is one thing I would recommend is the implementation of those shaking devices for when an order is ready rather than screaming out names, as down the hall you can barely hear it.
Now! Here is what I thought of my burger. I ordered The Daddy burger together with regular fries and a chocolate brownie milkshake. The smell of the burger was as it is supposed to be, also being grilled medium/rare and very juicy – luckily not fatty. However, I found that there was no real taste to the burger, I mean yes there was taste, but that came from the BBQ-sauce. The fries came in a bigger quantity than expected, which compensated for the small jar of milkshake which was okay as well.
Would I recommend this spot? Yes, definitely! They have a vast variety of burgers you can try and even ‘Dogs’, and perhaps you will love it. For now, however I will keep Burger Bar on my number 1 in Amsterdam on my quest for the...
Read moreFirst of all, this place was disgusting with trash everywhere, used latex gloves on the floor, the sink in the kitchen area was completely filled with empty beer bottles and cans (it looks like a fraternity house after a party) and there was food like cheese just left out, unwrapped, next to the sink full of empty bottles. Also the staff, although I counted 4 employees, were nowhere to be found most of the time. They would literally leave burgers cooking unattended and disappear in back areas for the majority of the time I was there, waiting for around an hour for my order. Then I saw a staff member come out of the side door on the left with 5 empty beer bottles that he took in the back somewhere, then he returned with a full beer bottle and went back into the side room! The staff are literally drinking on the job instead of cleaning up this biohazard waste dump. Next, I saw that same employee take someone's burgers and place them on the dirty counter next to the cash register! Right in front of me, then he proceeded to wrap them in paper and I immediately felt sick to my stomach. The staff are so lazy, I saw one woman taking chicken out of a freezer and she couldn't even be bothered to place it into the deep fryer: she just tossed it across the room into the fryer! Based on the location of this place and the fancy design, not to mention the price tag (I paid almost 50 euros for some burgers and fries) you would think this would be a high quality place, but instead it looks like the inside of a dirty truck stop toilet. I saw so many health code violations I'm surprised they haven't been shut down for mishandling food. Avoid at all costs!
Oh by the way: there were only 2 other customers in the restaurant and 4 staff members yet it took almost an hour for them to...
Read moreI visited this restaurant on my holiday to Amsterdam for my brother’s birthday.
When arriving at the restaurant we found a seat and ordered the food using one of the screens. We placed an order of €96 . Thats nearly €100. ( 5x burgers, 4x chips, 1x mozzarella bites )
We waited for 45 minutes before asking about where our food is to be told that they are busy and it is on the way, although people who had ordered after us had received their food.
We waited another 10 minutes whilst multiple other customers which arrived after us were still receiving their food.
Understandably, we raised this as a point to which we received rudeness and disrespect from the lady who seemed to be running the kitchen. She then took our receipt to “find the order” , we waited for her to return but she did not.
Following this we approached an older male member of staff who was calmer and tried to help handle the situation and retrieve the receipt for us so that we could show our bank and compensate the hour wait without it affecting them.
Yet, as nice as he was he “couldn’t find” our transaction even though we gave specific times and the total price, we later understood he was gaslighting us.
During this, the lady returned laughing with the receipt and told us she had cancelled our order and we were sent on our way in a rude manner.
No food, No drinks and over an hour wait.
We waited for nothing because she had cancelled it without reason and did not tell any of us.
This same situation also happened with a local dutch who ordered at the same time. He had only ordered ONE burger!
Avoid at all costs, disrespectful staff and long waiting times for a burger you can get elsewhere for half the...
