Once in a while we go with some business friends to Mr. Porter and that’s why i decided to write a review.
The location is fantastic although parking can be a bit tricky. They offer valet parking though🙏🏻
The entrance with is always a bless and “checking in” goes smoothly, all the time and nice hostesses bring you to your table.
So far the good news….
We go to Mr. Porter because they identified as a premium steak house hence we always order steak.
But…. Two remarks in this one:
every time we have been there, the steaks are too cold served the meat is always way too rare, even if you order “a point” in stead of “saignant” it’s always “bloody”
My review below is regarding our dinner last Wednesday.
We went with 5 people and ordered a bottle of white wine to start with and later when the meat was served a bottle of red win.
The winelist is good and served in a good way including refill.
However once main course was “forgotten” for some of the guest which result that we needed to wait. The meant was already not hot when it was served hence when we started eating it was way too cold.
The waiter offered to heat it up but previous times when we did this as well, the end result is not good. According to me it’s a patch method.
There was no salt and no pepper on the table , we needed to ask for it. After 15 min it was taken away 🤦♂️ very weird and they took it from another table.
Then at 2100h the fire alarm went off with sirens , some fire walls closed down and the waiters mentioned just to be calm, all under control, nothing to worry about. Music was switch off and the vibe was a bit different.
Anyways, can happen. In the end we topped the dinner off with 6-8 Remy Martin XO cognac and we mentioned that perhaps they could provide one round for free / provided by the house because of the forgotten main course and too cold steaks served.
However when we received the bill, a solid 4 digit number, we where quite astonished that we needed to pay all in full.
It you ask premium prices, more than happy to pay it but also deliver premium service and food. If this can’t be delivered somehow, I also can understand it but provide as a gesture at least something .
We had a short chat with the waiter about this but according to him all was fine so we didn’t go too much into discussion but it was a reason for me to provide this review.
Hopefully they can improve on this because it seems like a pattern (three times we visit the restaurant in 6 months times we experience “issues” as in too cold served steaks and / or too bloody).
Looks to me that it’s too busy in the restaurant and that’s why not too much attention on the cooking part: quick quick quick… my 2 cents…
Too bad for such a epic place, location, good vibe and excellent wine.
Please improve on the temperature of the meat and overall service and I am more than happy to adjust...
Read moreThere are numerous Argentinian steak restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Dam Square, most with identical menus. If it's a New York style steakhouse that you crave, you have to check-out Mr. Porter, a rooftop restaurant on the upper floor of the W Hotel, a trendy hotel in the Spuistraat, where there is usually a Lamborghini, Bentley or something similar, parked outside the front door. Just before you reach the restaurant reception area, there is a large floor to ceiling vitrine displaying various mouth watering cuts of meat being aged to perfection. In the background, a team of chefs are busy carrying out culinary preparations. A host or hostess guides you to your table. An extension of the hotel's W Lounge, the restaurant occupies an impressive amount of floorspace. The terrace has outdoor seating for those who prefer to dine 'al fresco'. The views, mostly of the eastern and western parts of the city, are sensational, with many of the city's landmarks clearly visible. An eclectic selection of curated music, often emanating from DJs next door, blends in with the surroundings to create the perfect ambience. If you bring guests, you know they won't be disappointed. It's also the perfect venue for family and business celebrations, or to propose to the love of your life. The menu features a "Little Kick Start" - a diverse choice of appetisers such as fresh oysters, spicy yellow tail sashimi, pan fried baby squid, Taboon roasted Foie Gras, Beef Tartare and various vegetarian options. Carpaccio, is offered in meat, fish and vegetable variants, as are the salads. There is a limited seafood selection including grilled lobster. If it's meat you've come to eat, you won't be disappointed. Personal favourites include Chateaubriand with Foie Gras, Japanese Wagyu A3, New York Strip and Rib Eye on the bone. Mrs Porter weighs in at an impressive 750 grams plus, or for the really daring, Mr Porter tops the scales in excess of 1100 grams. Sides are not included and have to be ordered separately. The wine list is impressive; They also create wicked cocktails here. If you still have room, usually it's a struggle, dessert features strawberry cheesecake, coconut Tom Yum Caviar and mango, chocolate fondant, profiteroles, fruit bowl or Cheese platter. Prices are not cheap, but still reasonable when you consider the oh so delicious food, impeccable service, great views and unique...
Read moreWe visited Mr Porter tonight with a group of four, spending over €600, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired.
Upon arrival, one member of our party arrived 10 minutes ahead of the others but was not offered a drink, setting a poor tone for the evening. The bathrooms were also problematic; the women's restroom had a sign indicating fresh paint, but it was unclear if it was open or not, and both the men's and women's bathrooms had insufficient lighting. The rooftop view and the interior is however very appealing.
When the rest of our group arrived, we ordered three glasses of Champagne Ruinart. However, the ordered red wine listed on the menu was not what was served; the staff informed us that the menu needed updating.
Our starters were overall good—especially the yellowtail sashimi and oysters—but the squid was overcooked.
The waiter explained the shared dining concept but pushed us towards ordering larger shared pieces of meat instead of individual Ribeye steaks. We agreed, but when the meat arrived, there were no plates available. When we finally received plates, they were cold, as was the lukewarm meat, which quickly got cold. We requested pepper and salt, which took several minutes to arrive. The mills provided were incomplete (according to the waiter, guests had stolen the knob) and empty, and it took multiple requests before we finally received working mills, but by then, the meat was cold.
The side dishes varied from delicious to mediocre.
Unfortunately the issues continued with dessert. We ordered dessert along with two espressos and a latte, which were forgotten and only served after we had finished dessert.
To top off the disappointing service, the bill was presented without notice, and another waiter informed us that he needed the table for guests who had been waiting for over an hour. This abrupt ending was particularly shocking given the amount we had spent.
Regarding the atmosphere, it became increasingly difficult to have a business conversation as the music got progressively louder after 8:30 PM.
This visit was for a business occasion with senior management, and we were incredibly disappointed by the service. The high-quality meat deserves better preparation, presentation, and service. We expected much more from a restaurant of this...
