I was just curious. I also needed a place to take a friend who's been there for me through some really tough times. I walk by the Zenith apartments at the corner of Pratt and S Paca every day to and from the gym. I've always wondered if anyone would move in. Well move in they have, and soyez les bienvenus! The menu has a variety of "Chesapeake cuisine" options. I couldn't decide between the Chicken Chesapeake or the fried chicken. I'm a southern boy, and while I'm not a chicken snob, I know good fried chicken. However, I didn't want pick around the bone in a nice restaurant like this. I was glad to learn that the chicken breast is boneless; they are more like cutlets. I ordered the southern potato salad, I had never had coddies before so we ordered them. These actually have cod in them. My friend went for the wild mushroom rosotto. To drink we had the pilsner (the place is owned by Guilford Brewing Company).
We didn't wait long (long enough to have a conversation) before the coddies came out. They were garnisehed with sprouts and served on a cream sauce (I didn't inquire). They cut open piping hot, layers of ingredients visible to the eye. I wondered how they were so moist and delicate and yet ... coddies? Intricate. My friend enjoyed them but we both agreed there was more to explore on the starters.
Our meals came shortly after we were done with our appetizers ( to which I mumbled some French and was wished bon appétit by the server). This French teacher was pleased. The presentation reminded me of the fine dining in old southern upscale restaurants; simple, yet pleasing to the eye. So we tasted each other's food and agreed. Anyone who can cook risotto correctly like that….. mmmm! The rice texture was perfect, the consistency of the dish -- it melted in your mouth. The taste of the mushrooms was remarkable.
Speaking of remarkable, we loved the potato salad. Nice chunks of red tomatoes; although I would have made them smaller. The forks and knives they give you are rather small; good for a teacher who long learned to wolf his food down on lunch breaks and taste it later. The fried chicken looked so good I couldn't wait. The chicken breading is crispy and has.a real kick to it. Lots of seasoning. The meat was so juicy that when you cut into it you could see the juice squirt out of it, flowing onto your fork or plate. The pickled onions were delectable and the combo between the spice of the bredding and the onions it was DIVINE. Hillbillies, Briars and red necks with some class, here's your fine dining with fried chicken. I didn't think I could eat it all (2 sizeable cutlets) but, surprise, my booty do ain't done growing!
We waddled our way back home full -- but not so full that we were uncomfortable.
Unfortunately they were out of two desserts that I would try, the Smith Island cake or the vanilla crème brulée. I was disappointed. But, that means I'll just have to pop by for coffee and dessert with friends some time.
Dress is casual to busines casual. Sandwiches are in the 15$ range entrés are 20-30$. If youre in any of the downtown hotels around Camden Yards or live in Ridgleys, Downtown or Pigtown and want something nicer than the the bars and pubs, this is a must try. I'll be back...
Read moreMy partner and I have been eagerly following the progress of Maryland Yards since we live very close by. We were excited that the space in such a prime location next to Camden Yards was being utilized. Once we saw that they were open for business we wanted to come check it out. We stopped by on a weekday/non-ballgame day for dinner and immediately loved the ambiance and decor. We were greeted and seated immediately by the friendly staff. It was during their happy hour and we were definitely drawn to great deals. We aren't big drinkers so we decided to leave the drinks for a later visit but we definitely wanted to try the Coddies. We also were impressed by the regular dinner options and wanted to try a variety of dishes. We ordered the Southwestern Blackened Chicken Salad, the Brewhouse Burger, and the Maryland Crab Soup.
Coddies- Huge potato and cod balls fried to a perfect texture served with a mustard aioli which was an excellent starter.
Southwestern Blackened Chicken Salad- We were surprised by the large portion size, they did not skimp on any ingredients. We appreciated that the romaine was cut down to biteable pieces and stayed crunchy without getting soggy from the dressing. The chicken was seasoned and cooked very well. The dressing was awesome and we thought it was a great touch that the salad was pre-mixed with the greens before the chicken was added on top.
Brewhouse Burger- We both agreed that this was the highlight of our meal. A straightforward burger but done excellent. The brioche buns were toasted just right. The patty was the right size between a good amount of meat without being overwhelming. It was cooked to a perfect medium, tasty, and very juicy. The gruyere cheese on top was perfectly melted but still had a great cheese pull. The garlic aioli on top was great. We also noticed that the lettuce was in smaller pieces as opposed to large leafs which we thought was a nice thought as the smaller pieces again stayed crunchy and fresh even with the heat of the meat on top and didn't get soggy. The tomato slice was thick and fresh and paired very well with everything else. The best surprise was the bacon jam with real pieces of sweet and crunchy bacon right on top of the patty-an excellent touch. We also liked the fresh cut fries.
Maryland Crab Soup-This was our only con of the night. It came out first and was seasoned very well but we could not find a single piece of crab meat in it. Not sure if it wasn't added or the pieces were that small. Might be a one-off; tasted fine but definitely a letdown for a crab soup to not have any crab in it.
Service: 5/5-it was a weekday night and there was low traffic so they were a bit lightly staffed so our waiter was juggling us and running the bar. We know they were still gearing up for their grand opening/it wasn't a game day and we have no complaints about the service.
Conclusion: We definitely appreciate this new addition to our corner of Baltimore and will definitely be back soon since we live so close to try more...
Read moreMediocre are best. Dined before a concert at CFG Bank Arena. We were immediately seated by the host, he sat us at the furthest table away from everyone. I knew this was not going to be good.
After being seating for nearly 10 minutes, someone finally came to offer us water. Great! Water!
Soon after, our waitress came over and apologized for the wait. We knew what we wanted to order due to the wait we had memorized the menu. My first question was, do you have any domestic beers? Meaning not local brewhouse beers that were listed on the menu, she seemed confused by the question, and said, all the beers on the menu are domestic since they are local. I ignored it and ordered a pilsner.
Placed the order for our appetizer and meal. Happy Hour special for the appetizer, 10$ for select apps. Ordered the coddies which were deep fried balls as a mixture of potato and cod. These were underwhelming as they had no real flavor, the struggle to find any cod in them was like a scavenger hunt, and definitely needed salt or something. Thank goodness for the tiniest lemon wedge to add some acid to the plate. Not recommended.
Entrees, we ordered sandwiches as we were not in a time crunch to make it to the concert. Crabcake sandwich and Brewhouse Burger, both came with fries. Let's start with the burger, it was just a burger, nothing special. I like a juicy burger, but this was so juicy the bun was soaked and couldn't pick it up as it was falling apart, be prepared to eat this with a fork. Crabcake sandwich; I took a risk after being able to smell the fishy aroma and ate it anyway, you guessed it, got sick, I don't think the crab was very fresh. The crab cake immediately fell apart after the first bite and I was left scooping up the sandwich with my fork, that was seemingly starting to lose its exterior paint from the handle, cheap tableware. If you order this, smell the crabcake before you eat it, if it smells fishy, send it back and leave.
Fries were not tasty and seemed unsalted, no salt or pepper on the table. They were jammed into the container so much they had to be dumped out onto the smallest plates on earth. Attempted to ask one of the staff for hot sauce to try to add some flavor and she walked away from me as I was asking. No bueno. This restaurant could be a lot better, but needs some work, and is way overpriced for the food and service. 18$ for a burger and fries, nahhhhh go around the corner to Pickles Pub, they know what they are doing with burgers and...
