BEWARE. Let me start by saying we were excited to try Hooked. We love fish and we love sushi. We did read the reviews about the restaurant not being cheap so my wife and I were prepared and are ok with somewhat expensive meals. We checked the menu as well prior and during our order and it seemed about standard for an expensive fish restaurant. The part we have an issue with and are now sharing with the public is that our waiter completely deceived us by not disclosing prices of certain items. As I stated we were a couple of 2 people, not an army. The menu is a bit confusing first and foremost. We were prepared to order a couple rolls and an appetizer and a few drinks and that would have been more than enough food for us. Our waiter (Joel) than let us know if we wanted sushi they have the Omakase - chef's choice and pointed to it on the menu. The Omakase reads $50 for 6 pieces nigiri, 6 pieces Sashimi and 1 roll. We both agreed that sounded great and decided to go for that along with the Ceviche of the day. He then asked if we would like to choose the fish for our Omakase which we said yes. He brought out 4 fish to choose from and explained them all at which we point we asked can we have a variety? Figured that was Omakase - chef's choice. He said no you have to choose the whole fish so we ended up picking one we liked. Now at that point is when the waiter should have mentioned the price range of each and every fish he presented. At no point did he indicate an additional charge on top of the $50 we saw on the menu for the Omakase. Mind you we have never eaten at this restaurant so were essentially clueless and we feel the waiter preyed on that. As the meal went on and our fish started to arrive we could see it was nothing like the Omakase we thought we were ordering. It was much more food than a group of 6 could have eaten. Dishes kept coming. At one point I said to him shocked, " Theres more? This is way more than we were thinking we ordered". Our waiter shrugged it off as if to say oh yes, this is what you ordered and went back to bring even more food. The more I think about the way he handled it and could blatantly see how clueless we were to what we ordered made us know we were being had by this guy and this restaurant. My wife and I were nervous to get the bill because of the waiters vibe. Now when we received this bill I have never been more shocked at the price. Our bill for 2 people was just under $500. Mind you we had 3 beers ($8 each) between the two of us so almost no alcohol. We had the Ceviche of the day at $22 and the Omakase at $50. You do the math and figure out the balance. The fish that we ordered was priced at $313! Then of course there are number of taxes involved and this DID NOT include gratuity. As the waiter came back to the table, I asked him politely, "when were you going to disclose the price of the fish?". He put his shocked look on like he was surprised but this man was not surprised at all. He knew what he had done. At that point his apology was not accepted on our part. We felt had and he knew it. We told him had we known the price we never would had ordered that and we told him he had an obligation to let us know a price range if it was going to be that much. And the the restaurant does have this obligation. This is no where on their menu and they don't tell you or at least our waiter did not think to tell us and proceeded to serve my wife and I a dinner for a small army that totaled just under $500 without gratuity. I was angry but I told him we'll pay because we ate it but you will be hearing my opinion online. He took the check and came back and he gave us a 10% locals discount which totaled $40 something dollars and brought the bill to $425, still a shocking number when you are not expecting to pay this amount for a meal. To be honest we should have stiffed him on the tip because of his actions but this is not our style. I still gave a $50 tip because I don't believe the kitchen should be penalized for this man's (Joel)...
Read moreWe went here to celebrate my Daughters birthday. She flew in for a weeks visit and it was her 25th birthday. Let me preface this by stating upfront that I am not a fish person. I would never go out of my way to order it nor would I eat it if offered to me unless I cooked it myself. My mother ruined fish for me by overcooking it.
I do love seafood like shellfish, lobster and the like. And Oysters!!! I do crave them from time to time. Go figure.
With all that being said, I LOVED Hooked. I ordered a half dozen of some of the best Washington coast Oysters I have ever slurped. The mignonette sauce was bright, vinegary and oh so wonderful with the tasty little morsels. My daughter snuck two of them and being it was her birthday I let her.
The Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri were out of this world. Yes, I ate raw fish. And I loved it. I think it was due to the preparation and presentation.
For the main course, I had the Diver Scallops prepared with the Miso Sweet Glaze. They were seared to perfection and the glaze added to their overall naturally sweet flavor. My wife had the same thing.
My daughter wanted a whole fish so the fish monger came out with 4 types of fish that were good for one person. She chose the one with the cutest eyes It was named something like robins wing or something like that. It was prepared raw, butter poached and flash fried. I had tasted from all three ways and it was awesome.
While we were waiting, to soak up some the tasty cocktails we were enjoying, we ordered the Kennebec Fries. They were also quite wonderful and very welcomed and did their intended purpose. Allowed us to order more cocktails.
Anna (Annie?) was our server and did an exemplary job. She kept checking in on us, making sure we were doing okay. Answered all of our questions. And kept things full. And didn't hover.
I can't wait to go back!! And...
Read moreHands down the best dining experience I have ever had. Cozy and inviting atmosphere, you walk in and are warmly greeted. The dining area is small, but intimate. Selections are limitless, I enjoyed a mule with Serrano in it, and a ridiculously good cream anglaise to top. It melts into the drink. Their in house Sommelier also stopped by. I was amazed at his knowledge and obvious passion for wine. Again, sans the uppity attitude, just wanted to help guide us in the right direction. I opted for a flight with dinner, while my mom chose a couple different glasses that were suggested. We shared their staple appetizer(crimpster), and while on the smaller side was packed with flavor. Shortly after, we were presented with our options of fish for the evening. The knowledge about each fish was spot on. They patiently answered all the questions I had as I immersed myself in the experience. I let the sushi chef take over, and they prepared my fish (jack mackerel) 4 ways on the raw bar. The depth and flavor profile of each preparation was transcending. The other fish (sea robin) was prepared cooked, and equally as good. The freshness was unreal for the mountains of Colorado, and personally I enjoyed being able to see and touch my dinner. Also a side note, they present the fish to you on a plate in an amazing and beautiful way, showing you that they used every portion available. Our waiter, Devon really went the extra mile to provide top notch service that I haven’t even received in some of the country’s top steak houses. Every employee I encountered was friendly, willing to help, and courteous. I won’t say it was a cheap meal, but I got every penny worth of quality. From the sushi critic, to the super foodie looking for a new experience, Hooked will not disappoint. A huge thank you to everyone for providing me and amazing experience for...
