EDIT: The hotel contacted me after they saw this review to send me a copy of the law they claim to be following. The only thing the document they sent me said, is that it is illegal for minors to loiter in the casino area and if they are loitering to try to ascertain their reasons for being there. So it seems to me that this hotel is harassing their guests for no reason because we were not loitering we were attempting to walk straight through to the hotel and no one tried to ascertain why we were there, we were just told we couldn't be in there. Unacceptable way to treat paying customers and there is no way I would put up with it again. There are a lot of other nice hotels in deadwood to try that I bet would treat their guests more respectfully. I'm taking my review down to one star for such poor customer service.
NOT family friendly. We stayed two nights, there was construction taking place along one side so the hotel entrance was closed. The only way to get in or out of the hotel was through the front entrance where the casino is. Multiple times when trying to return to our rooms, we were immediately approached by an employee telling us we couldn’t have our kids in the casino. We explained we were staying in the hotel and they would say “Oh I didn’t know go right on through” So I asked them how I should be getting in if we couldn’t bring the kids through here and they told us we could bring them through and then muttered something about it’s the law.... Now pretty much all of the businesses in deadwood have some type of casino or slot machines in them and the Hickok Hotel was the ONLY place we were ever approached about having kids with us. Other businesses has signs saying kids must be 3ft away from slot machines, which we did and no one ever said anything. I gave it one extra star because the bathroom in room 202 is very nice, but if you have kids I definitely do not...
Read moreOur 45-minute drive to Deadwood was specifically for the Hard Rock and the parade, envisioning a classic Hard Rock Cafe meal.
Seating was a major hurdle. We were limited to bar stools indoors or high-top tables outside. With a small, already grumpy child, the absence of booster seats was a significant problem; we had to rig a makeshift solution to keep him from falling off onto the pavement. The oppressive 90+ degree heat outdoors only added to our discomfort.
The food, consisting of burgers and pizza, was okay. Drinks were another story; the iced tea tasted truly awful, making us wonder if the water itself was undrinkable. Service was a consistent frustration. We faced a long wait just to be seated, standing around confused as staff repeatedly told us to wait for a hostess who turned out to be the same single waitress managing the entire patio. Our server, though seemingly overworked in the intense heat, struggled to keep up. Refills were lacking, and even getting the check took over ten minutes. The live music across the street provided a nice ambient touch, but it couldn't salvage the overall experience. This place simply didn't deliver the traditional restaurant vibe we sought.
Our disappointment extended to the Hard Rock store. It was surprisingly small and poorly stocked, leaving us unable to find the merchandise we typically expect from Hard...

We did not stay at the hotel. And we did visit on the Saturday during Sturgis week. With that being said, we measured knowing most places are understaffed and stretched thin.
We popped in for a bite. Their menu was limited, not sure if that was standard or because of Sturgis. Pizza, hot dogs and burgers was basically all there was to choose from.
We ordered a few pies. The toppings were okay. Cheese was awful. Sauce was decent. Crust was terrible.
The cheese fries were caked in garlic (to the point of being inedible) and the sauce might have been sold tomato paste.
The service was lame, as there was no service at all. You order at a window and pick up. They never called our # after waiting over an hour, we walked up and saw our order sitting in the window (who knows for how long, they had been calling other numbers, but never ours).
One of the areas was reserved for Harley Davidson for the outdoor concert. It was weird to seen an employee smoking in the corner of a reserved section, instead of an employee area.
