This turned out to be a restaurant that was full of surprises. The first surprise was that it existed. I mean that in the best way. While the threat of COVID19 lessens within the state of California because of high vaccination rates, it still is not the best time for the restaurant industry. It goes to say that it isn't the best time to open a new restaurant. The odds that a restaurant will fail are still higher than pre-pandemic.So I was very surprised to see a new restaurant opening up in this location the last time I picked up a to-go order at the neighboring Thai restaurant. A good Vietnamese restaurant in the neighborhood sounded nice though and I had high hopes of good, quality Pho and other Vietnamese dishes. The early reviews have all been very positive so I thought I would get a to-go order and invite a close Vietnamese friend over for a dinner and movie night. While everyone I know has been vaccinated for COVID19 and the state has a fairly high vaccination rate, I still think it would be wise to wait another 4 months or so before going out to eat in restaurant dinning rooms even though in person dinning is once again allowed in California. So this review is primarily all about the food but I did enter the restaurant and walked through their dinning .room to pick-up my order. That is where the second surprise hit me. The dinning room is larger than II thought it would be from outside. That is not to imply it is huge but it is a larger space than I expected and I would say that this is a medium sized restaurant while before I stepped inside I was thinking it was on the smaller side. I also really liked the look and feel of the interior. The dinning room has a modern look and feel but also feels very warm, inviting a cozy. The lighting was dimmed to a perfect level and I thought that this would be a great date night restaurant (if the food lived up to the early reviews). The menu is not extensive or even large for that matter but it does offer a nice selection of appetizers, soups (3 or 4), salads (3) and main courses along with a few deserts and a variety of Vietnamese coffee and iced tea related drinks. My friend and I decided to split an order of Cha Gio Egg Rolls (Chicken) to start with and we then split an order of Spicy Crab Noodle Soup and an order of Sizzling Spicy Pork BBQ with white rice. The egg rolls came with a sweet fish sauce for dipping and were perfectly brown and crispy. They were very good but you can only do so much with egg rolls so while they were good, I have had similar egg rolls from the Thai restaurant next door.. The crab noodle soup (glass noodles) was wonderful. Lots of minced crab meat and was the perfect level a spiciness. This soup left a very pleasant after taste in your mouth that had my taste buds begging for more. Just the sound of the sizzling spicy pork has my mouth watering and it did not let us down. They use a nice blend of spices and coat the pork with a thick coat of their spicy BBQ sauce. It was a delight for the senses and my taste buds celebrated by dancing about. My Vietnamese friend lived most of his childhood years in what used to be Saigon. He is much more well versed in very good Vietnamese food but he agreed that this was some of the best he has had in many years. We didn't try the Pho this time around but we are both looking forward to trying it in the near future. I also look forward to the day that I feel comfortable eating out in restaurant dinning rooms again. I can't wait to bring a intimate group of friends here for a feast of very good...
Read moreSlightly above average, maybe, but not memorable and won’t return. Primary reason being the abysmal service. The waitperson was brusque nearly to the point of rudeness; I was actually shocked she even gave my boyfriend a water refill when he asked for it as her general mien was that she was irritated at us for even being there. (I only got a refill by asking her for one as she walked away from the table after she dropped off our appetizer, which she delivered approximately 10 mins after the entree—which was spicy noodles and my glass was empty. If I hadn’t asked she wouldn’t have refilled my glass.)
We were never checked on or offered refills after we got our food, and after finishing our meals we sat for a while waiting for a check; finally we had to get up and go seek out someone to pay our bill when we were ready to leave.
We got the lady on fire noodles with tofu and shrimp. There were approximately two pieces of tofu and 3 shrimp in the entire dish. The noodles were tasty but dry.
We also got the “shrimp roll” which is actually just your basic coconut shrimp. They were delicious, but we were expecting something more than regular coconut shrimp.
I ordered a tofu bahn mi; not only was it not memorable, it was the weakest tofu bahn I've ever had. Disappointing for a Vietnamese place.
All in all, pretty underwhelming and we were baffled at the 4.5 star reviews. This place is pretty meat heavy though, and we’re pescatarian, so possibly if you’re into ox tails or tripe etc you’ll be delighted (as long as you don’t mind essentially...
Read moreWOW. If you consider yourself a Vietnamese food lover, MUST READ-
LA is known for having little to no good pho place, as the most robust Vietnamese communities are in Orange County (OC). My fiancé and I always struggled to drive 1h+ to OC just for solid pho and other Vietnamese dishes…UNTIL NO MORE
We ordered bahn mi, banh xeo, and pork belly rice dishes via DoorDash a few weeks ago, then ordered again but the delivery took too long so decided to come here in person. Unknown to us, the decision to come in person was a divine intervention by gods of Vietnamese food
We got back ribs hot pot (pho), chicken wings (don’t judge and try for yourself), and a spicy noodle dish and every single item was 10/10 especially the back ribs hot pot given their economically friendly pricing ($19.5 for 2 massive amazingly cooked ribs; all their dishes are fairly cheap for LA pricing)
Their food is jaw-droppingly good. So good that I just made up an adjective to describe how good they are. I read reviews saying they’re the best pho in LA, which I was initially skeptical, but YES THEY ARE
You can’t get anything wrong here. We’ve had many of their most popular dishes, so we’ll be back in a couple of weeks to venture into the less known dishes because we know the quality baseline is established without a shadow of doubt.
Order their crepes, back rib pho, bahn mi, or pork belly dishes, then come back to this review to thank me later :)
11/10...
