Da Kine Shave Ice — Restaurant in Maui

We were looking for a shave ice place to cap off our night after dinner in Kihei and Da Kine was the only place still open so we decided to try it. In terms of value and service, I would rate this place a 5/5. Very clean store and friendly staff. When we got our shave ice, they told us if we wanted more syrup just come up and ask. Service was a little slow but we didn’t mind - we realized this was a fairly new shop and it was towards the end of the night. In terms of the taste/flavor of the shave ice, I would rate it a 3/5. Everything was a little too sweet for our liking and the flavors had a slight artificial taste to it. It wasn’t bad but we had tried a few shave ice spots while in Maui and this one didn’t standout to us - fulfills the job if you’re looking for shave ice in the area but we wouldn’t go out of our way for it. I also got the mango flavor boba pearls. At first I thought maybe they forgot the pearls but realized they were on the bottom under all the shave ice. I wished their menu specified that these were popping boba pearls. I wouldn’t have gotten them if I knew that. I guess where I live, boba pearls typically means it’s made from tapioca so I just assumed the boba pearls on their menu would be similar. I was wrong. The candy on top was a nice touch to the overall presentation but way too sweet to eat (for our preference at least); we ended up eating about half of our shave ice. If you're visiting Maui, you must make a stop at Da Kine Shave Ice—this place is an absolute gem! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away not only by the delicious shave ice but also by the outstanding service, especially from Evan. He made the entire experience unforgettable.

Evan went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. His warm aloha spirit and friendly demeanor truly embodied the essence of Hawaiian hospitality. He patiently walked us through the menu, recommended the best flavor combinations (seriously, try the tropical mix with fresh fruit!), and made sure we were thrilled with our choices. His enthusiasm and genuine kindness made us feel like ohana.

The shave ice itself? Hands-down the best we've ever had. The texture was so light and fluffy, and the flavors were vibrant and authentic. The addition of local ingredients and options like macadamia nut ice cream or fresh coconut shavings took it to the next level.

Our experience this past week at Da Kine Shave Ice has been a 10/10. Tonight especially we were pleasantly impressed with the service and attitude of the employee Jason. There had been a mechanical issue regarding the shave ice machine, and throughout the entire inconvenience he had a smile on his face and was apologetic. When it came to our time to order, Jason was extra friendly and even complimented the merchandise we were purchasing. Once our order was ready, Jason not only personally brought us our shave ice but he also made us an extra one to apologize for the wait. Jason's attitude and effort has been above and beyond of what is expected. Not to mention the shave ice was amazing and the shop was very clean! Our new go-to shave ice place!
