As part of our Honeymoon, we spent a few nights at the Maui Coast Hotel. Our stay was great!
We were in a Kai Tower Ocean View King Room. The ocean view from the balcony was great! The balcony was quite spacious and had plenty of room for us.
The room itself was very large and it included a very spacious bathroom with an equally large shower. The room was well appointed, with lots of nice touches and plenty of storage. We especially appreciated the clothing steamer and also having all the outlets and USB charging points located throughout the room. The room decor was very nice as well. The bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet (unless you had the balcony door open, as to be expected).
There is plenty of parking on the property, although if you get in late, you may have a bit of a walk to your particular tower. We made use of the complimentary laundry machines and appreciated the complimentary laundry pods. Only issue is that finding an available machine was difficult, for 2 days the machines on our floor were in use throughout the day. We ultimately found some machines 3 floors above ours that were not in use.
The property is very well kept, and the pool area is especially nice and very well maintained. We liked that most areas of the hotel required the room key to access so that it kept non-guests from wondering round the buildings. The room key as a bracelet is quite nice, but we have a suggestion involving the elevators. We recommend the hotel move the pad that you have to tap the bracelet against up higher, as it's currently very awkward to activate the buttons with the pad being so low under the buttons.
The staff were professional, and were not rude but they also were not outwardly friendly. This was a common thing we ran across on Maui. The staff were much more welcoming and were more friendly at resorts that we stayed at on other Hawaiian Islands. We also were told we would get complimentary water bottles delivered to our room and that we could use the water stations around the property to refill them. The bottles were never delivered to our room. I contacted the front desk about this and they said they would be sent right up, but again they were never delivered. We ultimately wound up buying waters from the grocery store. We did see the complimentary bottles delivered to other rooms, so unfortunately we just experienced the same oversight twice.
The on-site eating options were acceptable, but the prices are a bit high for what you get. The pool side restaurant has good food, but is quite expensive considering it's from a food truck that is parked behind the bar. The on-site Kihei Cafe has good food at an acceptable price for breakfast, but the space is awkwardly laid out, and they literally have more than a dozen signs you're expected to read as you're walking in and they get annoyed quickly if you didn't happen to know something that is posted on one. It would be a better experience if they had a waiter/waitress that took your order instead of making you place the order before you found a table.
The hotel is a quick walk to the beach, and it's walking distance to some shopping centers. There are a few restaurants in the area that you can walk to as well. But most things required you to drive to them as this end of Kihei appears to be more of a local residential area and less of a tourist area (although it's likely these are all vacation homes).
Overall, I would stay at the Maui Coast Hotel again. The rooms were quite nice, the hotel has plenty of nice touches, and the area is quite convenient for visiting...
Read moreProbably the worst experience with a hotel we’ve ever had. Very poor service, promises made and not followed through, and overall felt like no one cared. Detailed review ahead.
We traveled over the weekend for our friends’ wedding. They setup a room block so we made reservations during that time. We also were arriving early so we booked an additional night before the room block dates as well.
Initially we weren’t able to combine these two reservations online and were also told when we called that we may have to check out after the first night and check back in for the next two nights.
We ended up calling again and spoke with Emily who assured us that she would be able to combine the two reservations so we wouldn’t have to check out after the first night and then check back in for the room block dates. This was done well in advance of our stay in an attempt to avoid any issues.
Issue after issue came as soon as we arrived.
When we went to check in, we noticed the couple ahead of us had been greeted with warm towels. We thought this was a nice touch. As the front desk person checked us in, another couple arrived slightly after us. Someone came out, brought them hot towels, looked us in the eye and walked off. Not sure why they treat some guest differently than others or if there’s something I’m missing but this was the first let down of many more.
Next we were told that we would in fact have to check out after the first night and check back in for the next two nights. Unfortunately the people at the front desk were of no help and had no idea how to combine the two reservations as promised.
The following day, we went back to the front desk to check out. We were initially told that the room wasn’t ready and that we would have to put all of our luggage in storage until our new room was ready that afternoon. After a lengthy back and forth, we were told that the room was in fact ready and that we could transfer everything over. During this back and forth, “the manager” was consulted with several times in their back room. We were then given keys to a room directly opposite of ours. Literally the door opposite the hall of our current room. Yes, all this hassle to move four steps across the hall.
I couldn’t believe it. When I expressed my disappointment, the only response given was a “sorry, that’s just how is it”. This is what really left a sour taste in my mouth. Not one single ounce of care about our experience here. Not a single offer to remedy the situation or anything. Simply, no one cares.
We stay at hotels frequently and I’ve yet to be treated this way anywhere.
If you’re thinking of staying here, I would look elsewhere. There are many other amazing places to stay that actually care about...
Read moreWe enjoyed our stay. The staff were pleasant and generally helpful, though we were misinformed before arriving about the "kitchenette" equipment, so didn't really get to make meals easily in the room as expected. The hotel is well situated for Kamaole I Beach and has a nice pool and hot tub area. It's very long/deep into the lot, perpendicular to the beach, so if you want to be closer to everything, ask for a room in the front part. We wanted quiet and to be well away from the 3 hours of live music at the pool every evening. The fitness facility is the best we've ever seen, even in our hometown. The "lanai" was pretty minimal, but we did use it to dry beach stuff and sat out in the cooler hours over breakfast or drinks.
The hotel lobby is pretty but has no AC so unless there's a breeze, could be hot in July. We would also have preferred no muzak, but it was everywhere in Maui! There was a presentation to sell island tours and activities at 8:30 each morning in the lobby which meant no one else could really enjoy it for that hour+
This is a busy part of Kihei, but far enough south to have very clean water. The beaches were busy but not overwhelmed. There is a busy road between the hotel and the beach, but there are crosswalks and drivers are used to the pedestrians. Though the gas station a block away at the crosswalk isn't very picturesque, we used the ABC store there every day for coffee, beer and sundries!
The beach/pool towel policy is really generous -- no limit, no IDs, no bringing back the last one to get the next one. We appreciated that and did not abuse it! There were also free bicycles to use and many people seemed to, but it was a hot, humid week.
There were lots of places reachable on foot to eat, rent snorkel gear, buy a six pack or anything you might need. You could do this location without a car and still have a good week at the beach. We had a car and found it handy to get to other beaches early in the morning to snorkel without hauling gear very far. The hotel seemed to always have lots of parking available which was different from our 3 other experiences on Maui and Kauai.
The bed was comfortable enough and the TV and internet reception quite good. The bathroom was pretty small (and we had to use it for food prep as there was no other sink or counter) but the shower was excellent. They provided bottled water every day along with coffee, but only powdered creamer.
We are still debating whether the convenience of everything at Kihei beats the more beautiful and peaceful area around Napili where we've stayed before, but where you needed to drive for...
